ENABLING ASSESSMENT

MEET529 (TUT) SPECIAL TOPICS 2

Solve the following problems as stated below. Draw the figure.

1. PROBLEM

The difference in elevation between the source of water supply and the centerline
of the base of the nozzle of Pelton wheel is 1300 ft. During the test the pressure
at the end of the nozzle was 500 psig when the flow is 45 cu. ft/sec. and the
inside diameter of the pent stock is 25 in. Compute the water HP at the base of
the nozzle.

2. PROBLEM

A geothermal power plant draws pressurized water from well at 20 MPa and 300
o
C. To produce steam-water mixture in the separator, where the unflashed water
is removed, this water is throttled to a pressure of 1.5 MPa. The flashed steam
which is dry and saturated passes through the steam collector, and enters the
turbine at 1.5 MPa and expands at 1 atm. The turbine efficiency is 85% at a rated
output of 10 MW. Calculate the over-all plant efficiency.
