Video Example
EXAMPLE 1

(a) How much work is done in lifting a 1.3-kg book off the floor to put it on a desk that
is 0.9 m high? Use the fact that the acceleration due to gravity is g = 9.8 m/s2.

(b) How much work is done in lifting a 23-lb weight 5 ft off the ground?

SOLUTION

(a) The force exerted is equal and opposite to that exerted by gravity, so the force is

d2s
F = m   = mg = (1.3)(9.8) =
N
dt2
and then the work done is

W = Fd =

(0.9) =
J.

(b) Here the force is given as F = 23 lb, so the work done is

W = Fd = 23 · 5 =
ft-lb.
Notice that in part (b), unlike part (a), we did not have to multiply by g because we were
given the weight (which is a force) and not the mass of the object.

EXAMPLE 4
A 200-lb cable is 100 ft long and hangs vertically from the top of a tall
building. How much work is required to lift the cable to the top of the building?

SOLUTION
Here we don't have a formula for the force function, but we can use an
argument similar to the one that led to the definition of work.

Let's place the origin at the top of the building and the x-axis pointing downward as in
the figure. We divide the cable into small parts with length Δx. If xi* is a point in the
ith such interval, then all points in the interval are lifted by approximately the same
amount, namely xi*. The cable weighs
pounds per foot, so the weight of
the ith part is 2 Δx. Thus the work done on the ith part, in foot-pounds, is

Video Example

We get the total work done by adding all these approximations and letting the number

of parts become large (so Δx → 0):

n 100
W  =  lim  2xi*Δx  =  2x dx
n → ∞  0

A variable force of 7x−2 pounds moves an object along a straight line when it is x feet from the origin. Calculate the work done in moving the
object from x = 1 ft to x = 11 ft. (Round your answer to two decimal places.)

The table shows values of a force function f(x), where x is measured in meters and f(x) in newtons. Use the Midpoint Rule with n = 4 to estimate
the work W done by the force in moving an object from x = 2 to x = 34.

Suppose that 5 J of work is needed to stretch a spring from its natural length of 26 cm to a length of 44 cm.

(a) How much work is needed to stretch the spring from 34 cm to 39 cm? (Round your answer to two decimal places.)

(b) How far beyond its natural length will a force of 50 N keep the spring stretched? (Round your answer one decimal place.)
