PARTS OF A CIRCLE
A circle is the set of all points on a plane that are of the same
distance or equidistant to a fixed point called the center. A
circle is named by its center.
Example: circle O

A radius is a line segment joining the circle’s centre and any

point on the circle. Since all points on a circle have equal
distances from the center, all radii have equal lengths.
Example:

A chord is a line segment whose endpoints are on the circle.

Example:

A diameter is a chord passing through the center of a circle. A

circle has an infinite number of diameters.
Example:

A circumference or perimeter of the circle is the distance

around a circle.

An arc is a portion of the circumference of a circle. An arc

whose measure is 180° is called a semicircle. The endpoints of
a semicircle are the endpoints of the diameter.
Example: ^ ^
EHJ , GJE
Theorem 2. If two inscribed angles of a circle (or congruent
circles) intercept congruent arcs or the same arc, then the
angles are congruent.

Example 1: In Figure 1 below, / PIO and / PLO

intercept PO. Since / PIO and
/ PLO intercept the same arc, then the two angles are
congruent.

Example 2: In figure 2 above, / SIM and / ELP intercept

SM and EP, respectively. If SM≅ EP, then/ SIM ≅ / ELP

Theorem 3. If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a

semicircle, then the angle is a right angle.
Example 1: In the figure, / NTE intercepts NSE.
If NSE is a semicircle, then / NTE is a right angle.
Theorem 4. If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its
opposite angles are supplementary.

Example: Quadrilateral DREA is inscribed in ꙨM.

m/ RDA + m/ REA = 180 .
m/ DRA + m/ DAE = 180 .

EXAMPLE:

ANSWERS:

1. 40°
2. 20°
3. 180°
4. 140°
5. 140°
