The United States of America is where the Venus’s fly trap has its origins. The Venus’s fly
trap is a unique plant. It belongs to a group of plants called ‘carnovorous plants’. These plants feed
on insects. The Venus’s fly trap special mechanism by which it traps its prey. This is how it works.
At the end of each leaf – which grows from the base of a long, flowering stalk – there is a
trap. The trap is made up of two lobes and is covered with short, reddish hairs which are sensitive.
There are teeth like structures around the edge of the lobes.
The trap contains nectar which attracts insects. When an insects comes in contact with the
nectar, the trap snaps shut. There are certain digestive juices inside the trap which digest the insects.
It takes about ten days for a trapped insect to be digested. We can tell when his digestion is
complete, for then the walls automatically open to wait for another victim.
There are about two hundred species of carnivorous plants. Another kind of these well-
known species is the pitcher plant. What differentiates this plant from the Venus’s fly trap is the
shape; the mechanism to catch insects is the same in both plants.
The pitcher plants are climbing plants which cling to other plants by means of tendrils. At
one end of the tendril, there is a pitcher-shaped vessel with an open lid. The mouth and the lid of the
pitcher contain glands which produce nectar to attract insects. When an insect settles on the nectar,
the lid of the pitcher shuts, trapping its victim. The digestive juices inside the pitcher then begin to
work.

d. attractive
e. sensitive
27. Both of the plants have nectars which are used to … insects.

Rain is advantageous because it brings water for all living things. But rain can be disastrous,
too, because too much rain cause floods which can wash away people, houses and other valuable
properties.
The following is how rain is formed.
The air is filled with tiny particles known as ‘vapour’. Vapour is actually the gaseous form
of water. Vapour is a part of air. The air around us is constantly moving because the air near the
surface of the earth is hotter and lighter. This is why this air rises. The air higher up in the sky is
cold and heavy, so it sinks. The rising of hot air and the sinking of cold water cause the air to move.
When the hot air rises to a certain level, the vapour presents in it, cools and changes to water. This is
known as ‘condensation’. When the water particles are too heavy for the air to carry, the air is said
to be ‘oversaturated’. The water particles then fall as rain.
28. The air cannot carry the water particles as they are so … that they fall as rain.
a. hot
b. tiny
c. light
d. heavy
e. constant
