Arts education play a large role in education and the development of the children
because through arts in education children can learn and having fun at the same time. The
article, “Why Arts Education Is Crucial, and Who's Doing It Best” discussed about the close
relation between the art in education and how important it is for the children’s education.
Smith, (2009) highlighted that arts education closely linked to everything that a parents want
for their children and the demand of the school which are “academic achievement, social
and emotional development, civic engagement, and equitable opportunity”. The article also
analyses and provided the studies on how the school in the United States are trying their
best to implemented art education in their teaching and learning process because they know
that art education are crucial and beneficial to the students. For example, based on the
research made by Frontiers in Neuroscience, learning music can improve the student’s
cognitive development which are the "verbal memory, second language pronunciation
accuracy, reading ability, and executive functions". (Miendlarzewska, et.al, 2014). So, this
writing will focusing on how the importance of learning theories, basic concepts and
elements of arts in education in the process of teaching and learning.
Furthermore, learning visual art is also important because the children are able to
learn a unique set of mental habits that are not taught in the school’s curricular or syllabus in
other words they are learning through their own experiences that they gain during the visual
arts activities. For example, the visual arts of dancing can help to increase the student’s
concentration and observation skills because they need to be focus on the choreography
and observe every detail needed which is also one of the mental habits listed. Based on the
journal by The National Art Education Association (2014), I agree that visual arts can
sharpen the student’s mental habits which are the ability to observe, envisioning, innovating,
and reflecting. This ability and mental habits are actually a very useful learning tool
according to Hetland and Winner (2014). This is because, by learning visual arts we will be
more observant towards detail and contents of the art. For example, when we are looking at
a piece of art such as the Monalisa drawing, we feel that it was looking at us because the
artist included every details which makes it looks realistic. So, if the students are able to
master this mental habits, it would not be a problem for them to identify contents that they
need in the teaching and learning process. Thus, mental habits can develop the critical
thinking and improve the student’s achievement in school.
Lastly, based on the article entitled the “The Importance of Teaching the Elements
and Principles of Art”, I totally agree that by learning the elements of art in education, it
allows the student to master the various technique on how to use different type of mediums
skillfully. (Sharon, 2015). This is because, in art there are a lot of elements of art that are
being used, so if the students are able to master the technique of the elements, they will be
able to create a wonderful piece of art. Besides, based on the article ‘The Visual Elements –
Color”, colours that had been used can tell the mood and atmosphere of an artwork. So, if
the students are able to figure out how the colours work together, it would shows that the
student had master the technique and will help them to create a good masterpiece.
(Fosmire. E, n.d). For example, if the students wanted to create a cool and peaceful, they
know that they should use colour, blue, green and the combination of this both colour. Thus,
this tells that it is important for the student to be able to master the element of arts such as
the colours because this helps them to choose the right choice of colours for their artwork.
In conclusion, learning theories, basic concept and elements of art in education are
equally important in the teaching and learning process. This is because, each of this had
their own roles in the student’s education especially in today 21 st century learning. So, as an
educator, they play a large role in teaching the students these arts because through this,
students can gain a lot knowledge which are beneficial for them and they will also find that
learning English more fun and enjoyable hence lead to more engagement of the students.
Thus, educator should take every opportunity to teach the students in a more modern way
rather than the traditional way because creative arts can develop more of the student’s skill
and knowledge.
