COURSE DESCRIPTION

This class is designed for students who need help with career direction and/or major selection.
Some students would also benefit from the curriculum if they desire confirmation that their
desired direction is a good fit for them.
Students will examine personal career possibilities in the world of work in the Canvas classroom.
Activities focus on self-assessment through testing, values clarification, and an examination of
one’s strengths. Students will then research the world of work in relation to this self-
examination; practice goal setting and decision making, and synthesize the information to sort
out career decisions and determine next steps.
I cannot stress enough that you will get out of this class and this process what you are willing
to put into it.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

● Acquire skills for successful self-exploration in terms of interests, values, attitudes, skills
and abilities
● Examination of the world of work through career and job research

CLASS STRUCTURE
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT 110

CAREER & LIFE PLANNING SYLLABUS

This course is designed for students looking for help with choosing a career direction. We will
work through chapters in class and “modules” on Canvas throughout the course that will walk
you through learning about yourself, the world of work, and finally synthesizing this
information. Each class will include lecture and in class activities both independent and group.
Each module will have a number of assignments with due dates. You are welcome to work
ahead and turn in work early if you prefer. You do need to work through the modules in order,
however. The material builds on itself. Completing all assignments is necessary to reap the full
benefits of the career decision making process.
The Canvas modules will involve mini-lessons in canvas to support your text, referral to related
websites for research, related video’s in you tube, etc.
You will be asked to write a brief summary of each chapter reading. This is to help verify that
you are indeed reading the material. Please don’t get discouraged with this work – it can feel
like a lot for only 1 point each assignment. However, you would be reading the chapters and
lessons anyways. I’m just asking you to write a brief summary letting me know you did so. The
bigger point items are the “core” of the class, but need the background information through
readings to be fully useful. Look ahead to make sure you know and understand what work
needs to be done for the bigger point assignments.

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO

1. Attend all classes

2. Participate in all canvas modules, assignments and class discussions and activities.
3. Turn all work in on time. Late work NOT accepted (except for emergencies
communicated and approved immediately, not after the fact).
4. Come to class motivated to participate and learn - HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE!!
5. Be respectful of instructor and students in all communications

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
The only prerequisite skills and preparation required for this course are that participants must be
able to navigate a web-based application and have sufficient equipment and Internet connectivity
in order to access the course. Participating in training from an EvCC computer meets this level of
sufficiency.
In general, it seems people run into trouble the least when accessing Canvas using the Chrome or
Firefox web browsers. Whichever browser you choose to use, we recommend that you update to
the most recent version. JavaScript must be enabled and Flash is required.

For technical support, click the orange Help button in the upper right corner of the screen to
choose from the available options or contact the EvCC eLearning Office at
elearning@everettcc.edu or 425.388.9367.

EVALUATION AND GRADING

HUMAN DEVELOPMENT 110

CAREER & LIFE PLANNING SYLLABUS

All assignments are due promptly on their scheduled due dates. Late work is not accepted
unless you have received prior approval due to an unforeseen true emergency situation. It is
your responsibility to contact me in advance if there is a problem, or for any missing information
you may need to meet your obligations. Attendance and participation is of the utmost
importance! Please do not ask me to accept late work for non-emergency situations,
Using the CANVAS calendar is a great tool to help you see what is due when.

Grades will be calculated according to the following:

94 - 100 = A 78 - 79 = C+
90 - 93 = A- 73 - 77 = C
88 - 89 = B+ 70 - 72 = C-
83 - 87 = B 68 - 69 = D+
80 - 82 = B- 62 - 67 = D
61 - 0 = F

Points will be awarded for each assignment. Please stay on top of how you’re doing. Email or
come discuss any concerns with me. I am happy to meet with you and respond pronmtpy to
emails.
Among assignments (and class discussions) to summarize chapter readings, canvas “lessons”,
various chapter exercises, and additional activities – there are some major
components/assignments that are core to the class:

SUMMARIES OF 2 INTEREST INVENTORIES:

You will write a 1-2 page summary of the MBTI and Strong Interest (SII) inventories you will
take. The summary will include a brief report about the results of the assessment (brief but
thorough!) and your thoughts about the results. Be sure to view the "rubric" attached to the
assignment to see how I am scoring this. You will need to “take” the inventories at least one
week prior to their due assignments (I have noted this in the CANVAS calendar). Not taking
the assessment in time to get your results back from me is not an adequate excuse for the
summary assignment being late.

CAREER STUDIES:
You will research a minimum of 3 careers and submit a written report. You are encouraged to
research many, many careers in addition to the requirements for this assignment.

INFORMATIONAL INTERVIEWS:
You will interview two people in career areas you would like to know more about.
You are to interview someone outside your family and social network (no
exceptions!!). There are sample questions as well as the written format to report
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT 110

CAREER & LIFE PLANNING SYLLABUS

these interviews. You want to start planning these in advance so you can get them
scheduled and write your reports.

FINAL SUMMARY:
You will create a visual summary of all the components of the class, tying it all together. Please
feel free to use PP or some other visual presentation such as a poster board collage. Be as
creative as you want. Be sure to view the RUBRIC so you know how you will be graded and are
sure to include all the key components.
