PRELIMINARY DESIGN BASIS REPORT ON HVAC SYSTEM FOR THAPAR UNIVERSITY AS ON

13th APRIL’ 2021
THAPAR UNIVERSITY

1.0 Introduction

The purpose of this document is to provide a brief description of air conditioning

system based on VRF technology being designed for various spaces of the proposed
Residential Development.

VRF Outdoor unit design would have the following features:

1. Multiple Inverter Scroll Compressors for better part load efficiency.

2. Green R-410a Refrigerant.
3. Heating/ Cooling.
4. Anti-Corrosion Treatment.

Treated fresh air systems are being envisaged in the design, which will have
independent Outdoor Unit. System has been designed to facilitate positive pressure
air-conditioning, in order to discourage infiltration of untreated outdoor air.

2.0 Salient Features of System Design

The salient features of the HVAC system design are as under:

a. Energy Efficiency

The minimum and maximum cooling demand between February & November
would be in the region of 50% and 95%.Peak heating demand shall arise during
January. It would therefore be appropriate to establish selection of a particular
system to ensure that the overall power requirement goes hand in hand with
the fluctuating demand to ultimately avoid loss of precious electrical energy.

We accordingly propose installation of energy efficient Variable Refrigerant

Flow System with COP in the region of 3.5 at peak load & 4.5 at partial load for
cooling, and more than 4 for heating. Outdoor Units and Indoor Units shall
complement each other and communicate via. Control wiring interlocked with
sensors. Based on this feedback mechanism, and sensors installed in Outdoor &
Indoor Units, the VRF system’s Microprocessor Panel shall evaluate & optimize
the speed at which the inverter scroll compressors run. Electronic expansion
valves in Indoor Units shall modulate refrigerant gas to provide close
temperature control and greater efficiency.

b. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Awareness is growing rapidly towards need for improving indoor air quality
(IAQ) due to environmental pollution reaching alarming proportions in and
around metropolitan cities. There are occasions when occupants complain of
exhaustion & fatigue which could be attributed to poor indoor air quality. We
therefore, recommend treated fresh air replenishment in all spaces in line with
ASHRAE 62.1-2013 recommendations.

1.0 Basis of Design:

1
THAPAR UNIVERSITY

The parameters influencing the air-conditioning system design have been considered as
under:

a. Orientation

The building orientation is as envisaged in the architectural plans.

b. Outside Design Conditions

The outside design conditions for PATIALA have been given here under:

Temperature Dry Bulb Temperature Wet Bulb Temperature

Summer 110 F (43.3 C) db 75 F (23.9 C) wb

Monsoon 95 F (35.0 C) db 83 F (28.3 C) wb

Winter 45 F ( 7.2 C) db 41 F ( 5.0 C) wb

d. Inside Design Conditions

Summer & Monsoon:

Temperature : 73+ 2 F (22.7 + 1 C)

Relative Humidity : Not to exceed 65% during Monsoon.

e. Fresh Air Requirement: Generally in line with ASHRAE 62.1-2013 guidelines.

1.0 Heat Loads

System Designing

In a residential application the load and usage pattern fluctuates considerably

between day and night, different seasons etc. The spaces to be air-conditioned take
into account mostly sensible and minimal latent heat load.

The various systems of heating, ventilating& air-conditioning being considered are

described here under:

Summer Air-conditioning & Winter Heating:

The proposed VRF system shall serve dual purpose of heating as well as cooling
During winter, the VRF system shall provide heating by default.

The constant speed/ inverter compressor/s and the condenser shall be part of the
outdoor unit/s (ODU). The electronic expansion valve and the evaporator would be
part of the indoor units (IDU). Liquid refrigerant from ODU to IDU, and gas from IDU
to ODU shall travel through insulated copper refrigerant pipes, thereby completing
the Reverse Carnot Cycle.

Anti-corrosion treatment shall be carried out for all ODUs, preferably from factory.
All refrigerant piping shall be insulated, and then wrapped in glass cloth, followed by
application of specific chemicals towards UV protection, mechanical strengthening,
and anti-corrosion. Refrigerant pipes shall run in shafts/ cutouts and above false
ceiling spaces.

The IDUs (Double skin AHUs being preferred) have been selected for specific zones
as elaborated above. Centralized Treated fresh air unit & associated Outdoor unit
shall be placed on terrace.

Condensate drain piping associated with IDUs/TFAs shall be carefully carried out to
ensure leak proof disposal of condensate water.

Toilets& kitchens shall be mechanically ventilated using inline fans/Fan Sections,

which is optional (In majority of cases kitchen is handled by specialized agency)

3.0 Exclusions:

The following activities do not fall in the scope of HVAC package. The associated work
shall be carried out by other agencies, under direct supervision of the HVAC
contractor:

a. Associated Works: Civil:

i. All associated civil works such as foundations for equipment including

PCC blocks for equipment on terrace shall be provided by civil agencies
in accordance with the HVAC contract and shop drawing, and under
direct supervision of the HVAC Contractor.

ii. Any kind of false ceiling work required for enclosing the ductwork and
piping.

10
THAPAR UNIVERSITY

iii. Providing cutouts in slabs/ walls for passage of refrigerant pipes/ducts,

opening in walls for passage of supply air ducts/fire dampers etc.

b. Associated Works: Electrical:

i. Three phase adequate 4 wires, 50Hz power supply terminating in the

VRF ODUs, AHUs and TFAs Unit located on terrace along with TPN
MCCB/ELCBs earthing etc.

ii. Single Phase power point shall be provided near each VRF finished
indoor units (Hi-wall & cassette) of VRF system as indicated in design
drawings.

iii. Single Phase power point to be provided near each inline fan for exhaust
as shown in relevant design drawing.

c. Associated Works: Plumbing:

i. Providing drainage facility near VRF indoor units.

4.0 Electrical Power Requirement:

The electrical power supply required shall be 415+10% volts, 50 Hz, 3 phase and 220+
10% volts, 1 phase AC and the total electrical power requirement for HVAC system
shall be as under:

i) VRF System: 200 KW
