ACTIVITIES DURING THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-2021

1. Inaugural Function and Guest Lecture, 18th


September, 2020

The inaugural function of the CIVIL ENGINEERING


ASSOCIATION for the new academic year of 2020- 21 was held on
the 18th of September, 2020. The Civil Engineering Association
was inaugurated by the guest speaker, Dr. Mahendrakumar
Madhavan PhD., P.E., Associate Professor, Department of Civil
Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH).
Dr.R.Kumutha, Professor & Head/Civil Engineering, delivered the
welcome address and gave best wishes to the members of the
association.  Mr.Hariswaran S, Assistant Professor, Dept of Civil
Engineering, introduced the Office Bearers of the association to the
audience. Mr.Kalaivannan R, Assistant Professor, Dept of Civil
Engineering, introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Mahendrakumar
Madhavan, to the audience. The guest welcomed the gathering
and gave a brief overview on parallel flanged beams. He explained
about the basic philosophy involved in the design of parallel
flanged beams and he also enlightened the students by explaining
the difference between Indian standard beams and parallel flanged
beams. He also explained the defects and damages existing in
Indian tapered beams and he also spoke about the dimensions for
hot rolled steel beams, columns, channels and angle sections. He
illustrated the history of structural steels and design steps. He
provided a clear comparison of specifications between IS 808 and
IS 12778. The session ended with vote of thanks delivered by
Ms.Neha.G, junior executive member, CEA (IInd Year, Civil
Engineering). The participants appreciated the webinar and
considered it very useful and informative.

2. Professional talk - 1, 21st November, 2020

The objective of the professional talk is to bring out the


communication skills of students and make them share their
knowledge about different streams in civil engineering. The host
introduced the participants to the audience by mentioning their
topic on which the talk was given.
Ms.G.MONISHA started the session  by thanking HOD/CE ans
the faculty coordinators for giving the opportunity. She shared her
internship experience that she gained at TNSCB (Tamil Nadu
slum clearance board). During her presentation, she had
highlighted the importance of internship and the learning outcome
that are as follows:

Ms.Kavinmalar, was our next speaker for the day. She started the
session  by thanking  HOD/CE & the faculty coordinators for
giving the opportunity.  During her presentation following points

3. CIV QUIZ, 4th December, 2020

This is a Quiz based event conducted for the Second Year


students by the final year students of Civil Engineering. The
quiz consists of two preliminary rounds. Each round consists
of 14 questions, the team with maximum correct answer
proceed for the next round. Time period of 20sec is given to
read the question. The questions taken for this quiz are
related to the First and Second year (III-sem) subjects like
Engineering Mechanics, Strength of Materials, Mechanics of
Fluids, Surveying, Construction Materials and Computer
Aided Drafting and Modelling. Participants felt that it was
different experience apart from normal classes in this
Lockdown.

4. Professional talk - 2, 4th December, 2020

The objective of this webinar was to discuss about various Civil


Engineering Softwares by Mr.Mahend Kumar.R, Internship
Experience of Ms.Sharadha lakshmi.V.S and about the Job
Opportunities for Engineering Graduates by Mr.Siddharth.J.U.
Vivedhitha Varshini A.G of 2nd year Civil Engineering , delivered
the welcome address, introduced the speaker to the audience and
was the host for this webinar. Mr.Mahend Kumar.R began the
webinar by sharing his personal experience about the various
softwares that he learned in Civil Engineering.
Mr.Mahend stressed upon the importance of these softwares in
Civil Engineering projects.He gave a brief explanation about it in
detail.The contents are:
*Classification of Civil Engineering Softwares
*Details about the softwares
*A brief explanation on modeling
*Future scope of using the softwares
Mr.Mahend explained the different types of softwares such as
AutoCAD, Revit, Lumion etc. using model representations and
videos.
Mr.Mahend concluded the session by advising the students to
learn the softwares and to do site visits for more knowledge.

Our next speaker, Ms.Sharadha lakshmi.V.S began the session by


sharing her learning experience about her Internship on Raft
Foundation in Jeyes Builders Company. Ms.Sharadha explained
the difference between Raft Foundation and Isolated Footing. She 
explained in detail about the various steps involved in
construction which are as follows:
*Site clearance
*Excavation
*Sand filling

*Raft Foundation Concrete
Ms.Sharadha explained about the Slump Cone test to check the
workability of concrete through video.
Ms.Sharadha concluded her presentation by thanking the Civil
Engineering Association (CEA) and the Faculty members for the
opportunity in exposing her level of knowledge.
Mr.Siddharth.J.U began the session by explaining in detail about
the various Job Opportunities available for Engineering Graduates.
Mr.Siddharth stressed upon the importance of GATE exams and
Management courses such as MBA.The following contents were
discussed in detail:
*Higher studies
*Management courses
*Entrepreneurship
*Becoming an expert in Civil Engineering
*Entering in Private Sector Jobs
*Internship and courses
*Collaboration with professionals
*Campus placement
*Jobs in public sector
The other speaker, Mr.Siddharth concluded the session by
motivating the students about the wide range of Job Opportunities
which are available to them.

Alumni talk - 1, 9th December, 2020

The Department of Civil Engineering organised an Alumni Talk


on 09/12/2020 for the benefit of the students as an eye opener for
them to have clarity on entrepreneurship for the civil students.
Ms.Monisha.G, of 3rd year Civil Engineering, delivered the
welcome address, introduced the speaker to the audience and was
the host for this alumni talk 1

The key speaker of the event is Mr. A.S Praveen Raj, Managing
Director, Blend group of Companies, Chennai. He spoke on the
aspect of being an entrepreneur. He gave extra input on the
balanced decision making between the risk taking and profit
making. He added on details of how perseverance, patience with
dedication can lead to success in the business. He also added the
challenges involved in handling the manpower. He spoke on the
areas of how to ensure being a successful marketer. He also
pointed out the various challenges in this area and how to resolve
them and successfully overcoming other competitors.

This session was an interactive session and He shared the industry


experience. He also answered the questions of students like

 What did college life teach you?


 How did you use opportunities in your life?
 Why do you want to earn money?
 What made you to join your friends in business?

 What are companies and achievements you have made?
 Mistakes when you started the business?
 What are the Principals of your life?
The alumnus addressed the students regarding the industry
experience on their domain expertise. The skills required to be
acquired by the students in their domain was conveyed to the
students. It was also discussed on how to harness the required
skill set. He also threw light on the scope of starting business while
being a student.
The session was started with the formal way and The session
ended with vote of thanks delivered by Ms.Monisha G (III year)
The participants appreciated the alumni series and considered it
very useful.

6. Professional talk - 3, 11th December, 2020

The objective of this webinar is to discuss about How construction


industry works and about Cost-effective Building Techniques in
Construction. Vivedhitha Varshini  A.G of 2nd year Civil
Engineering, delivered the welcome address, introduced the
speaker to the audience and was the host for this webinar.

Mr.Hiren Sreedharan began the webinar by sharing his past
experience in Sreerosh Properties Industry in various departments
such as purchase, project and licensing. Mr.Hiren explained the
Real estate industry function and all the problems faced by it.He
gave a brief idea and insight for creating a business in Real estate
industry. Mr.Hiren gave a list of steps to be followed for a
successful business in the field of Real estate industry and
explained in detail about it.
 Market analysis and feasibility report.
 Arranging capital
 Acquiring land/Site selection/Joint development
 Important points to be noted before purchasing land
 Surveys,Site plans, Development plan and Building plan
 Approvals and licensing
 RERA-Real Estate Regulatory Authority
 Construction and Sales
Mr.Hiren concluded his speech by speaking about an important
topic on CREDAI which is an apex body created for the developers
in India which serves as the voice of the real estate developers.
Miss. Jenisha. A, began her webinar by explaining the various Cost
Effective Techniques in Construction .
Miss.Jenisha explained how Cost Effective can be achieved . It can
be achieved by Four ways , they are:
 1. Economy in land use 
2. Economy in selection of materials 
3. Economy through appropriate building design 
4. Economy through suitable construction management 
Miss . Jenisha concluded her speech by giving a small talk about
importance of Money in construction and Time Management .
Thus she completed her session by saying an inspiring quote by
John - Harvey Jones .

7. Professional talk - 4, 22nd January, 2021

The main objective  of this webinar is to discuss about ANCIENT


CIVIL ENGINEERING MARVEL,by Mr. Ajay Krishnamurthy ( III
year civil), and about the USE OF THE PLASTICS  IN  BRICKS by
Ms. Jenani ( II nd  year civil engineering).
Ms. Sharadha Lakshmi V S of 3 rd year Civil Engineering (senior
executive member, CEA), delivered the welcome address,
introduced the speakers to the audience and was the host for this
webinar. Mr. Ajay  krishnamurthy  began the webinar by sharing
his knowledge about the Ancient Civil Engineering
Marvels. Mr.Ajay Krishnamurthy started his presentation by
explaining the ancient times when civilizations came into
existence. He briefly elobrated the drainage  system which was
adopted by the Indus valley civilization. He pointed out the
features of the civilization such as drainage connected soak pits,
Brick laid channels, proper alignment of manholes, Large brick
culverts with corbelled roofs etc… He also stated that, if Chennai
had a better drainage system similar to this 2015 flood wouldn’t
have been possible. He stated that, our ancestors have endowed us
with great monuments and structures along with them they gave
us engineering mysteries and inspirations. It is our job to find
answers and attain inspiration and incorporate them into the
future structures we build. He concluded his session by saying  “
may the world be a better  place with us as civil engineers”.

Ms. Jenani M of III rd  year civil engineering, began  the session by
sharing  her knowledge on usage of plastics in road and bricks.
She started explaining about plastic roads and the process
involved in it. She also briefly explained the steps i.e
 Collecting waste plastics
 Cleaning 
 Shredding 
 Melting the plastic at 165 degree celsius 
 Blending with hot aggregate and bitumen.

She perfectly explained  the comparison between normal and


plastic roads
She also explained about plastic bricks and its types i.e
 With plastics and sand
 With plastic bottles and sand 
She also stated that, it requires only 20 bottles to make one brick.
She briefly elobrated the process the progress involved
information of plastic bricks.
She concluded her presentation by stating the advantage of using
plastic bricks in construction.

8. Alumni talk - 2, 30th January, 2021

The objective of this series is to discuss about his


“JOURNEY FROM CAMPUS TO CORPORATE” by Mr
Aravind Raja M Balasubramanian. The Department of Civil
Engineering organized an Alumni Talk on 30th January
2021 for the benefit of the students as an eye opener for
them to have clarity on Big Data, Machine Learning, Data
Engineering for the civil students. Ms.Monisha G of 3rd
year Civil, delivered the welcome address, introduced the
speaker to the audience and was the host for this alumni
talk. The key speaker of the event is Mr.Aravind Raja M
Balasubramanian, Application development Analyst ,
Accenture Technologies Pvt.Ltd., He spoke on the aspect of
being an App development analyst as a civil engineer. He
added on details of how perseverance, patience with
dedication can lead to success. He also added the
challenges involved in handling the manpower. He spoke
on the areas of how to ensure being a successful app

developer. He also pointed out the various challenges in
this area and how to resolve them and successfully

9. Professional talk - 5, 5th February, 2021

The objective of this webinar is to discuss about the Internship


experience
of Mr.Gogula Chezhiyan N and Mr.Hariharan V and about the Safety
protocols to be followed during construction by Ms.Srilekha N.
Ms.Jenisha A of 2nd year Civil Engineering, delivered the welcome
address, introduced the speaker to the audience and was the host for
this webinar. Mr.Gogula Chezhiyan N began the webinar by explaining
the basic details of site. Mr.Gogula Chezhiyan N, gave a detailed

explanation about the various types of foundation in detail. The contents
discussed in the session are :-

 Shuttering
 Centering and Jockey
 Types of shuttering
 Scaffolding
 Concrete and Design mix
 Types of concrete test

Mr.Gogula Chezhiyan N, concluded the session by  giving a brief


explanation about his internship experience. Mr Hariharan V began his
speech by explaining about Erection of Reinforcement, Concreting and
Curing. Mr Hariharan V gave a brief talk about  Bar bending in
beams.The topics discussed in this session are :-

 Importance of cover block


 Couplers
 Levelling the concrete surface
 Column concrete and alignment
 Systems and Curing

Mr Hariharan V, concluded the session by giving a summary on his


internship knowledge after knowing the processes in construction. Ms
Srilekha N, gave an introduction about the Importance of safety
measurements in Construction site. Ms Srilekha N, explained about
construction technology,machinery, innovative tools and softwares. The
following contents were discussed in detail :

 3D printing building
 Venture capitalists
 Impaction of technology in construction
 Virtual reality and Augmented reality
 Site sensors and Drones

Ms Srilekha N, concluded the session by stressing about the importance


of safety precautions in construction site and gave a brief note about
avoiding accidents during construction. The session ended with vote of
thanks delivered by Ms.Jenisha A (IInd Year, Civil). The participants

10. Alumni talk - 3, 13 February, 2021

The objective of this series is to discuss about the Journey to a top


B - School by Ms. Suhani Singha, SVCE Alumnus (2012 - 2016), a
PG student at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management, Pune -
MBA HR. Ms. Arshiya A S, Joint secretary of CEA (II year) was the
host of this webinar and she introduced the speaker, Ms. Suhani
Singha, to the audience. Ms. Suhani Singha welcomed the
gathering and introduced herself to the audience. She spoke about
her strengths and hobbies first. She started her presentation
showing the information about the top six examinations i.e. CAT,
TISS, SNAP, XAT, IIFT &  NMAT for persuing masters in business
administration. She explained about the scoring criterias in each of
the examinations and she grouped the exams according to thier
difficulty level. She spoke about the CAT (common admission test)
and XAT (Xavier aptitude test) exam which are considered as
toughest examinations and she also stated that accuracy and
decision making are the major criteria which are important for
clearing these two exams she also said that maths and quants are
more tougher but the English and verbal sections are bit easier.
She spoke about the TISS (Tata Institute of Social Sciences) & IIFT
(Indian Institute of Foreign Trade) which are of medium difficulty
with no negative marking and the current affairs are considered
important for these two exams. SNAP (Symbiosis National
Aptitude Test) and NMAT (NMIMS Management Aptitude Test)
are the easier examinations where the only problem is the short

time limit. She spoke on how she prepared for SNAP exam and
she enlightened the students to build on thier strengths and work
on thier weakness.  She moved on and spoke about how to crack
the interviews and group discussions. She suggested the students
to keep upto date information about current affairs. She stated
that, it is important to make the interviewer ask what you wanted
to ask. She also showed some of the questions which are expected
to be frequently asked in an interview. She perfectly enlisted and
explained the specialisations in M.B.A. i.e. Finance, Human
resources, Operations, and Marketing. She explained the
importance of managing and multitasking skills which are
considered important in the business field. She also stressed in
getting certifications in fields relevant to HR, Finance, Excel,
organisational behaviour etc., before joining M.B.A. and she also
suggested some best certification providers. She perfectly
explained about the career prospects in HR, Marketing, Finance
and Operations and She spoke about the Internships which are
important for the completion of M.B.A. Finally she gave some
ideas to the CEA for conducting events for the students to enhance
thier communication skills and she concluded her presentation
with an icebreaking questionnaire session with students. The
session ended with vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Neha.G, junior

The objective of this webinar is to share tips and tricks to score


high marks in GATE exam by Ms. Kaavya R and about the
Internship experience in CMRL by Mr. Praveen Kumar. Jenisha A
of 2nd year Civil Engg., delivered the welcome address,
introduced the speaker to the audience and was the host for this
webinar.

Ms. Kaavya R began the webinar by sharing the tips and tricks that
students should master to crack the GATE exam. The following
were shared by her:
 List of PSU’s undertaking through GATE.
 Required cut-off for PSU’s, IIT & NIT’s and Anna University.
 Having our own unique goal and working towards it.
 Different sources for learning.
 Taking regular practice test.
 How negative marking is done.
 Getting used to virtual calculator.
 Importance of time management.
 Keeping ourself motivated and achieving our goals
successfully.   

Mr. Praveen stressed upon the importance of doing internships


and gaining experience in Civil Engineering projects. He gave a
brief explanation about his intern experience in detail. The
contents are:
 Vision and Mission of CMRL.
 Project schematic map and budget.
 Sequence of the construction activities.
 Geo-technical investigations.
 Construction of elevated depot.
 Pre-stressing and the steps involved in it.
 Quality control.
 Underground Station.
 Purpose of tunneling and machinery involved in the process.

The participants appreciated the webinar and considered it very
