APPLICATION OF HEAT AND COOL

IN BIOLOGY

Prepared by:

BS Biology-3A
What is heat?
Thermal energy transferred between two
systems at different temperatures that come in
contact.
Vasodilation
Decreased contraction of circular smooth muscle in
the arteriolar wall, leads to decreased resistance
and increased flow through the vessel.

Example: Fainting

Vasoconstriction
Increased contraction of circular smooth muscle in the
arteriolar wall, leads to increased resistance and
decreased flow through the vessel.

Example: Shivering
Unit of
Measurement
Joule (J)
Breezes
refer to winds that are evident near bodies of water
Sea Breeze
It is a coastal breeze during day time
which moves the air/wind from sea to
land.

Land Breeze
It is a coastal breeze during night time
which moves the air/wind from land to
sea.
Sources of Heat
Hand rubbing

If we rub our hands together they get warm.

There is resistance to the rubbing motion.
Friction is a resistive force between two
surface that are sliding, or trying to slide,
across each other.
Burning of woods

Burning is one of the most common ways

of producing heat. When something burns,
it produces a flame and also heat.
Burning of candles

It can generate small amount of heat and

light while it burns.
Electricity

It is used for lighting rooms, working fans

and it provides means of amusement such
as radio, television, and cinema, which are
the most popular forms of entertainment.
