EFFECT OF EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS AND ITS INTEGRATION IN GRADE

IV SCIENCE TOWARDS PUPIL’S ACHIEVEMENT

I.Context and Rationale

1. Earthquake preparedness

2. insufficient knowledge about earthquake preparedness

lack of cooperation of the Barangay officials, parents and other stake holders

taking for granted about the quarterly earthquake drill

lack of earthquake preparedness integration in Science subject

3. It was found out that during the quarterly simultaneous earthquake drill Brgy.

officials, parents, pupils do not give more emphasis on this kind of event

conducted by the school.

Few attended the conferences regarding on matter about earthquake

preparedness campaign.

During the conduct of COT it was found out that there is no integration of

earthquake

Preparedness in Science subject

School believes that earthquake preparedness plans can help significantly

reduce death and injury caused by earthquakes. Thus, the pupils find it important to

have an earthquake drill for them to be prepared in every case of earthquake. Let our

school children know our school’s plans; knowing that the strong earthquake can

happen anytime in our place, stay calm, remain were you are when inside a structurally

sound building or home, and be prepared for aftershocks. People indoors and outdoors
should protect themselves from falling objects and debris and taking refuge to a heavy

table. And if there is still time to run outside of the building stay to an open area or

spaces and prepare themselves for aftershocks.

4. Patong Elementary School, Burauen East District, Burauen, Leyte is one of the

earthquake prone area and surrounded with water coming from Brgy.Guinarona

of Dagami and Burauen river. It is one of the mid-land barangay schools in

Burauen East District and has low socio- economic status as evident in the

people’s way of living, but it is strengthened by education.

5. Formerly Senator Loren Legarda (2011) emphasized that we need to prepare

ourselves to disasters today, as well our resilience to natural disaster like

earthquake in the future, for a much safer environment for people to live in. She

said early action should be at the very heart of our efforts. She strives to help

everyone understand the risks we face and equip ourselves with preventive

measures to lessen, if not eliminate, the impact of earthquake hazards. We must

also be ready to face these hazards and we must know what to do in order to

secure ourselves in case of an earthquake.

6. Yes, as a front liner of bringing knowledge to our students we would like to

develop among our teacher and students the value of being ready at all times

especially if there is earthquake occurred.

7. To develop high-esteem among our students.

8. Checking of lesson plans with integration of earthquake preparedness, conduct

COT, hold monthly conferences with Brgy. Officials, parents, and other stake

holders
9. Give reading materials and pamphlet, posting tarpaulin how to prepare before,

during and after earthquake occurrence

II. Action Research Questions

Preparedness in Grade IV Science of Patong Elementary School Burauen East District,

Burauen, Leyte.

Specifically, this study seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of preparedness of the following?

1.1 Teachers

1.2 Pupils
