Introduction

Background of the Study

The Pearl of the Orient Seas or also known as Republic of the Philippines (RP) is an
archipelagic nation located in Southeast Asia. (Through the years passed, the country has been
identified as one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.) It is located in the ”Pacific
Ring of Fire” makes the Philippines prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In
addition to that, its geographical location and physical environment makes it vulnerable to
tsunami, sea level rise, storm surges, landslides, flood/flash-flood, and drought…

Out of natural phenomena that the Earth has been experiencing earthquake is one of the
deadliest and devastating. (In a year, an average of 100 earthquake of a size could cause serious
damage.) They are usually hard to predict and can strike without warning in the many of the
Earth’s earthquake zones especially with areas of high population density. When extreme
earthquakes occur in such areas, there is a high probability that this will be a disaster with
terrible loss of human lives and unfold economic cost.
.
The Philippines is predisposed by various types of natural hazards for the reason of its
geographical location and physical environment. An average of 20 earthquakes per day is
experienced in the Philippines. The Philippines has experienced damage of 10 earthquakes
having magnitude over 8.0 Richter Scale.

The province of Cagayan has also been labeled as a Geo-hazard zone which means that it is
susceptible to natural disaster. As a matter of fact, a few earthquakes have already hit the
province of Cagayan especially in Tuguegarao City in the past months having a magnitude of
approximately 5 Richter Scale.
At the time of any disaster, Schools are mostly vulnerable as demonstrated in many
calamities.
If an earthquake will strike during the day, children will suffer the worst because they are usually
at school, away from their parents/ guardians. Since this disaster can strike when least expected,
Anytime and anywhere, the researchers came up with the study to assess and determine the
status of earthquake preparedness of the Junior High School at the Lyceum of Tuao

Statement of the Problem
Generally, this study aims to determine the level of earthquake preparedness of the Junior
High School Students at the Lyceum of Tuao for the school year 2019-2020. Specifically, this
study sought to answer the following questions:
 What are the attitudes of the Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao when
there is an earthquake?

 What are the insights of the Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao with
regards to earthquake preparedness?

 What is the Level of earthquake preparedness of the Junior High School Students of the
Lyceum of Tuao when there is an earthquake?

Significance of the Study

The significance of this study is to assess the earthquake preparedness of the Junior High
School Students at the Lyceum of Tuao. In addition to that, the outcome of this study can be used
to determine whether or not the Junior High School of the Lyceum of Tuao are prepared in times
of disasters specially earthquakes.
Moreover, this study will be used to review the preparedness measures adapted by Lyceum of
Tuao and evaluate whether or not the outcome of this study would prevent the risk of casualties
after earthquake. Lastly, the result of the study can cause a change for the improvement of the
Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao to participate in, and help improve their
preparedness in response to earthquakes. This Study will benefit the following:
Students: This study can help determine their understanding and knowledge about earthquakes. It
can also build awareness and develop the preparedness measures in response to earthquake
which they can apply outside and inside the school.
The School: This study can help in finding out whether or not the majority of the Junior High
School Students at the Lyceum of Tuao are prepared enough in times of earthquake.
Furthermore,
the school can benefit in this study to adapt the proper preparedness measure in response to
disaster with a specific focus on earthquake to reduce casualties.
Parents/Guardians: This study can help with their understanding and to feel secured for the
Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao when there is an earthquake.

Future Researchers: Results and findings of the study may serve as help deeper studies on the
earthquake preparedness of the students of the Lyceum of Tuao

Scope and Delimitation

The main focus of this study is to assess the earthquake preparedness of the Junior High
School Student of the Lyceum of Tuao during the school year 2019-2020.

This research study will only focus on the Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao
with regards to their response when there is an earthquake and not to other disaster that could
occur.

The collection of data for the analysis of the results for the earthquake preparedness of the
Junior High School Students of the Lyceum of Tuao is through a survey questionnaire that will
determine their gender and curriculum. Furthermore, it will also contain questions that they will
answer through their own experience, knowledge, and opinion.
