This textbook contains a set of guidelines for the teacher. Adhering to it will
ensure that the learner receives a sound and solid foundation of the basics of
Islamic practises and beliefs, especially the spirit in which these ideas were
transmitted and conveyed. The orthodox and authentic spirituality found within
the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad  has been woven into the text as it is
without doubt what the fiqh of Islam is aimed at, which is to produce a spiritual
and God-conscious human being.

INTRODUCTION
In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of
the worlds.
This short treatise is designed to aid the teacher with some general ideas
fundamental to the growing learner. The ideas expressed in the textbook should be
expounded upon in due measure to the learners and spread across multiple
sessions until the meanings become firmly rooted within their developing and
receptive hearts.
The educator will find it covering the outward acts of worship referred to as Fiqh,
the fundamental beliefs referred to as „Aqīdah, and the conditions and states of the
heart referred to as Tasawwuf or Ihsan. These three spheres of knowledge are
fundamental to any human being and are in fact the holistic education and
nourishment process, which the Prophet Muhammad  was sent with to all
creation.
Graphics have been added to stimulate the learner and at the same time allow the
minds of both the learner and educator to run freely in the most positive manner.
May Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful, accept this humble effort and allow this
text to be a source of blessings in our lives, especially that of our young learners.

INTENTIONS
The Muhammad Tree

THE PROPHET  SAID:

“ACTIONS ARE JUDGED BY THEIR INTENTIONS…”

A good deed is like a seed planted in this dunyā. If nurtured and given sufficient
sunlight and water, it will grow into a fruit-bearing tree. The fruits of this tree will
be experienced and enjoyed in the ākhirah. These deeds are nourished with good
intentions.

MERCY
Muslims begin their actions by saying In the Name of Allah, the Compassionate, the
Merciful. This sacred formula, whose author is Allah, is based firstly on the supreme
name Allah, then on the two names al-Rahman and al-Rahim, both of which are
derived from rahmah, or mercy, a word which can also mean love, kindness, and
compassion. This formula is repeated before every surah in the Qur’an except surah
Tawbah.

Our beloved Prophet Muhammad is referred to in the Qur’an as a mercy to the entire
creation (rahmatan lil-‘alamin) and has having a sublime and beautiful character
(khuluqin ‘adhim).

There are many verses in the Qur’an where Allah stresses His vast mercy:

Allah says: “Your Lord hath prescribed for Himself mercy” (Qur’an 6:54)

and “My mercy embraceth all things” (Qur’an 7:156)

and “Announce, (O Muhammad) unto My slaves that verily I am the Forgiving, the
Compassionate. (Qur’an 15:49)”

And from the hadith of the Prophet  “Allah  says, ‘My mercy outstrips my wrath.’”

and “Allah is not merciful to one who is not merciful to people.”

and: The Messenger of God kissed (his grandson) Hasan, the son of ‘Ali, while Aqra‘
bin Habis al-Tamimi was sitting nearby. Aqra‘ said, “I have ten children and have not
kissed any of them.” The Messenger of God looked at him and said, “He who does
not show mercy shall not be shown mercy.”

and: An old man came looking for the Prophet, and the people were slow in making
way for him, so the Prophet said, “He who is unkind to the young and disrespectful to
the old is not one of us.”

and: “The merciful are shown mercy by the Merciful. Be merciful to those on earth,
and He who is in heaven will be merciful to you.”

and: “Allah made mercy one-hundred parts. He held back ninety- nine parts, and
sent down one part to earth. It is from that part that creatures show mercy to each
other, such that a mare will lift her hoof over her foal, fearing that she might harm
him.”

Our studies and teachings are done with the primary purpose of developing a
healthy, positive and merciful human being. The very word “madrasah” comes from
the word “darrasa”, which means to chisel away at a rock to finally arrive at the
diamond in the centre. The teacher “mudarris” is the chiseller whose primary
objective is to bring out the diamond in the learner. The reality is that this purpose
and objectivity has been forgotten or at least sidelined. A revival of these Quranic
and prophetic ideas of mercy is needed if we are to connect to the heart of the most
merciful of all creation, Muhammad .
