Self-Learning Module 13
Earth’s movement with
respect to the Sun
Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Science 7 Self-Learning Module 13 on Earth’s movement with

respect to the Sun!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC)in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Science 7 Self-Learning Module 13 on Earth’s movement with

respect to the Sun!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

RECAP

In Grade 6, you have learned about the major members of our solar system.

Let us find out if you still remember it.

Name the major members of our solar system by arranging the jumbled letters.
Use the descriptions to find the hidden word.

1. U N S - center of the Solar System

2. T H E A R - third planet from the sun and considered as the blue
planet
3. S U N E V - hottest planet in our solar system
4. E P N T E U N - eighth and farthest-known Solar planet from the Sun
5. P I T E R U J - fifth planet from the Sun and the largest in the Solar System

LESSON

The solar system is made up of the Sun and everything that orbits around it,
including the planets, moons, asteroids, comets and meteoroids.

The Solar System

http://www.justscience.in/articles/demystifying-the-solar-system/2017/05/26

In your Grade 6 lessons, you encountered the different planets and its
characteristics in the solar system namely Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
The Earth
https://nomoreplanet.com/planet-earth/

Our home planet Earth is the third planet from the Sun, and the only planet
known to have an atmosphere containing free oxygen, oceans of water on its surface,
and, of course, life. It is the fifth largest of the planets in the solar system and it's
smaller than the four gas giants — Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune — but
larger than the three other rocky planets, Mercury, Mars and Venus.

Earth has a diameter of roughly 8,000 miles (13,000 kilometers) and is round
because gravity pulls matter into a ball. But it's not perfectly round. Earth is really
an "oblate spheroid," because its spin causes it to be squashed at its poles and
swollen at the equator. It is orbiting at about 149 million km (93 million miles).

Earth is constantly spinning like a top around its axis. This spinning is what
we called rotation. A rotation is a circular movement of an object around a center
of rotation. The geometric plane along which the rotation occurs is called the rotation
plane, and the imaginary line extending from the center and perpendicular to the
rotation plane is called the rotation axis.

https://k8schoollessons.com/earths-rotation/
https://museum.seiko.co.jp/en/kids/know/nature_01.html
It rotates eastward, in prograde motion. As viewed from the north pole
star Polaris, Earth turns counterclockwise. The effect of Earth's rotation is that we
have a cycle of daylight and darkness approximately every 24 hours. This is called a
day. As Earth rotates, the side of Earth facing the Sun experiences daylight, and the
opposite side (facing away from the Sun) experiences darkness or nighttime.

While the Earth spin on its axis, it also revolves around the sun. The path of
the Earth moving around the Sun is called an orbit. The Earth’s orbit is elliptical.
This movement is called revolution. It takes one (1) year or 365.25 days to complete
a full revolution that revolves from west to east or in the counterclockwise
direction. Since the Earth is not perfectly in line, we have a Leap year, for every 4
years, we take the extra 1/4 days from the previous years, combine them, and add
an extra day to the calendar.

Due to its revolution, we can experience daily weather and global climate by
affecting wind direction, temperature, ocean currents and precipitation.

Revolution of the Earth

https://study.com/academy/lesson/revolution-of-the-earth-speed-effects.html

Earth’s movement is important to all living things on Earth. As

the Earth rotates on its axis and revolves around the sun, each area of its surface
gets a turn to face and be warmed by the sun. The sun affects everything from the
weather we experience to the food we eat, and even our health.

VALUING

Module No. 13: Activity 3: You owe me!

Earth’s movement around the sun can greatly affect the Earth’s environment
and even affects our daily lives.

The environmental impacts of human activity are expected to increase as the

climate continues to warm and as the world becomes progressively more populated,
industrialized, and urbanized.

The following are the pictures that shows the importance/ impacts of earth’s
movement. Tell something about its importance.
