CONNECTOR & SWITCHES

CONNECTORS
• “A conductive device used for connecting electrical
circuits by means of wires and cables.” Electrical
connectors consist of plugs & jacks.
• Wires and cables are connected using permanent and
temporary connections. Permanent connections are
made by soldering, welding or crimping whereas plugs
& sockets (jacks) are generally used for temporary
connections.
• Seperable connections are used when circuits can be
connected to other electrical components.
Properties of Connectors
 Keyed connectors are designed to only connect at a specific
orientation. This prevents the user from damaging pins or inserting
them into the wrong sockets. Pins and casing are oriented so that
the plug cannot be inserted incorrectly

 Locked connectors provide a means to lock the connection in

place, preventing the connection from being undone accidentally.

 Hermetically sealed connectors are fully function underwater and

can withstand water pressure up to a certain depth.
Properties of Connectors
(contd.)
 Water resistant connectors are designed to protect
connections from water damage.

 Moisture / oil resistant connectors are designed to protect

connections from oil or moisture damage.

 EMI or RFI filtering on connectors provides protection

against electromagnetic interference (EMI) and/or radio
frequency interference (RFI).
Types of Connectors
1. USB Connectors
2. Audio Connectors
3. Power Connectors
USB Connectors
USB Connectors come in two flavors host & peripheral. In the USB
standard, there is a difference between the two, & the connectors on
cables & devices reflect this.

▲USB-A Connector ▲USB-B Connector ▲USB Mini Connector ▲USB Micro Connector
Audio Connectors
Another familiar connector group are those used for audio-visual
applications – RCA & Phono. While these can’t be truly be
considered to be same family, as the USB connectors.

▲Female RCA Connector ▲ Female Phono Connector

▲ Male RCA Connector ▲ Male Phono Connector

Power Connectors
While many connectors carry power in addition to data, some
connectors are used specifically to provide power connections to
devices.

▲ Barrel Connector ▲ IEC Connector ▲ Molex Connector ▲ JST Connector

SWITCHES
• “An electromechanical device used to connect or
disconnect a circuit is known as Switch.”
• The moving part of a switch used to connect or
disconnect a circuit is called a Pole.
• The types of switches depend on the connections of the
circuit they make.
• Two essential components such as pole & throw can
confirm what types of connections a switch can make.
These two components are also used to define variations
of switch contact.
Types of Switches
The types of switches are classisfied into four types namely:
• SPST (Single Pole Single Throw)
• SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw)
• DPST (Double Pole Single Throw)
• DPDT (Double Pole Double Throw)
SPST & SPDT
SPST – It is a basic ON/OFF switch, that is
used to connect or break the connection
between two terminals. The power supply
for the owl circuit is given by this switch.
▲ SPST

SPDT – The SPDT switch is a three

terminal switch, one terminal is used as
input & remaining two terminals are used.
It joins a mutual terminal to one or the
other of two terminals.
▲ SPDT
DPST & DPDT
DPST – This switch contains of two poles
that means it includes two identical
switches located on side by side. It is
operated by one single toggle, which means
that two discrete circuits are controlled at a
▲ DPST
time through one push.

DPDT – This switch is equal to two SPDT

switches, it means two separate circuits,
connecting two inputs of each circuit to one
of two outputs. The switch position
controls the number of ways & from the
two contacts each contact can be routed.
