Lightning Protection
System Assessment
Audit Direct Strike, Indirect Strike & Grounding System
What is lightning
protection system?

Protection Infrastructure against:

• Direct Strike by using Air terminal
(point of strike), Down Conductor
(cable, can be isolated or non-isolated)
and Grounding system for dissipation
current

• Indirect Strike by using Surge

Protection Devices (Surge Arrester,
Spark Gaps) with coordinated by
functions
Direct Strike, can cause:

• Physical Damages such as broken

tree, houses, causes fire (for fuel tank).
• Can cause sudden death to living
How (humans and animals).
lightning
Indirect Strike, can cause:
affect us?
• System damages such as broken
electronics devices
• Cause down time to power supply
• System corrupt/error
Conventional Methods
• Passive Air Terminal Rods, ref. IEC 62305
(EGM, Rolling sphere)

Direct Strike Early Streamer Emission Methods

Protection • Active Air Terminal Rods, ref. NFC 17-102
(Triggered time active protection)

Collection Volume Methods

• Active Air Terminal Rods (Active
protection by heights)
Direct Strike Lightning Protection

• Conventional System, govern at IEC 62305, NFPA 780, UL

Direct Strike Lightning Protection

• Conventional System, govern at IEC 62305, NFPA 780, UL

• Air Terminal Rod (Copper or Aluminum), Size 15-16mm or more

• Down Conductor: Bare Copper Cable or Ground Cable (Yellow

Green) size 50-70sqmm or Copper Tape size 25x3mm or more

Direct Strike Lightning Protection

• Non-Conventional System govern by NFC 17-102

so called “ESE” or Early Streamer Emission
Level Protection definition is MANDATORY before defining area protection

• Triggered Time Air Terminal (equal to 60μs or under)

• Down Conductor by Isolated (Shielded Cable) or Non-

Based on Standard IEC, purpose grounding
Do we need design for:

Good • Safety
• Equipment protection
Grounding • Transient protection
system? • Electrostatic Discharge
• Noise discharge (neutral grounding)
• Grounding for Lightning
Protection System in many
Do we need standard does not definite value
Good but offer methods
Grounding • Deep driven
• Star design
system? • Mesh design
• Chemical Rod
• Combine
Grounding Issues identified in practice:
• Earthing resistance value
• Soil resistivity relatively high, soil consist
of limestone or rocks.
• Multi earth resistance value, create earth
Do we need potential rise due to different resistance
from each driven rods.
Good • Maintenance failure, corroded
Grounding components

system? • Neutral grounding value

• Floating neutral grounding (ungrounded),
complicated applications
• Solidly neutral grounding, applied to most
transformer but frequently has leakage
implication to neutral ground value high
