Did your school comply with RA 1425?

How effective is the Rizal law in instilling patriotism

among secondary school students? Why is it still important to include Rizal course in
college curriculum (you can highlight a particular value of his life and works)?

To summarize the RA 1425 or the Rizal Law, it is to include the life and works of Rizal
in Universities and Colleges as a course particularly his novels, Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me
Not) and El Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed).
Batangas State University complies with this law and Rizal is taken by the students
on Midterm Classes. From my experiences, I find it fascinating when I am discovering things
from our history. I am interested in how the system works back then and because of
knowing Rizal’s works such as Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, I can imagine life from
the past. How Filipinos are doing polo y servicios(forced labor) and how they were called
indio (poor people of our country who could be slaves and peasants only). Heroes fight for
our nation’s liberty and it is right to know what are their experiences and how they devote
themselves to the country. With these, students are inspired to do more for the country since
they know how things work in the past. A big example is a topic about politics. People
especially high school students to people below 30 are most likely to fight for their rights to
vote in order to stop corruption. There is also a topic about how China is invading the
Philippines and the new generation is trying their best to reform the system to fight for our
motherland and so that history won’t repeat itself.. This is the result that RA 1425 is aiming
for, the patriotism of the new generation. The devotion that we must have for our country to
make it better. We must teach children what the heroes did for us to have freedom, and Rizal
subject would be one of the bridges to knowledge regarding our ancient history. The lessons
brought to us by Rizal through his work will guide us to fight despite indifference and
discrimination.
“Kabataan ang pag-asa ng bayan.” We are the hopes and dreams of the future and
taking Rizal subject would help us to gain more knowledge and be inspired by the National
Hero’s life and works.
