Living in the 21st century

Lesson 1
5A Technology and innovations
1. Lead-in Technology
1a In teams, students work together to unscramble the words related to technology. This will
help to elicit what they know and lead-in the new topic.

2. Vocabulary Technology compound nouns

Ask students if they know what compound nouns are. Let them give some examples, or
give examples by yourself to clarify. You can use this explanation from Cambridge
Dictionary:

Some nouns consist of more than one word. These are compound nouns. Compound nouns
can be formed in different ways. The most common way is to put two nouns together (noun
+ noun); other common types are adjective + noun and verb + noun.
2a Students need to match the end of one card with the beginning of another to create
compound nouns connected with technologies. As a result, there must be a vicious circle of
the domino cards.

a) Do you use Apple devices? What do you think of its impact on modern society?
b) What do you know about its history?
c) Are Apple devices truly better than all other devices presented on the market?

3b Read the article and discuss it.

Apple Epoch
No need to introduce Apple. It seems that everybody has heard of it these days. Its iconic design and simple
interface make it a market leader even despite its price. The devices are widely used all around the world
and very often demonstrate a person’s status.
Apple Computer Company was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald
Wayne the day before releasing their first computer. The company's first product was the Apple I. This
computer was designed and hand-built entirely by Wozniak, in the garage nearby his house. Apple I was
sold as a motherboard —a base kit concept which wouldn’t be sold now as a complete personal computer.
Later, Wayne sold his share of the company back to Jobs and Wozniak and left the company, so on January
3, 1977 Apple Computer, Inc. was incorporated without him.
One of the first personal computer, more or less similar to what we use nowadays, Macintosh, was
launched in 1984. The prices were initially high, but in October 1990, Apple introduced three lower cost
models, the Macintosh Classic, Macintosh LC, and Macintosh II.

4. Reading ‘Youngest Billionaires in the world’ (to the book)

4a Read the text below. Pay attention to the words in bold.
According to the statistics, there are more young billionaires nowadays than at any point in
history. Thanks to family business, technology start-ups and investments1 these young people
don`t need to think about mortgage2 payments and taking loans3 to pay for the education of
their children if they don`t get any scholarships4. They aren`t interested in getting salaries; on
the contrary, their companies are interested in good employees who can make enormous profit5
for them.

Let`s take a look at the list of the youngest rich people.

The first two ladies are sisters – Alexandra (22 y.o) and Katharina (23 y.o) Andresen. Each of
them inherited6 42% of the Ferd ownership7 stakes (almost 1.4 Billion $ each). Ferd is a
Norwegian investment company that runs hedge fund owned by their father.
Another representative of the youngest billionaires is Gustav Magnar Witzoe (26 y.o). He owns
almost 3 Billion dollars. He was given the stakes of SalMar ASA, one of the world`s largest
salmon producers. Also, he invests money in real estate8, foreign currencies9, the foreign
exchange10 market and some startups.
The last person in our list is Evan Spiegel (28 y.o). Unlike people mentioned above, Evan has
gotten his fortune11 as a co-founder of Snap Inc. It is a camera company that operates Snapchat,
a photo messaging service.
As you can notice, not only family business can make young people billionaires. Hard work and
unique ideas can give people a possibility to keep their money not in piggy banks12, but on
bank accounts13.

4. Grammar Reported Speech Statements (to the book)

4a Look through the information below to be able use reported speech properly.
We use Reported Speech to retell what somebody told before. If the first clause of reported sentence
contains present or future tenses (“Somebody says/tells that”), we don’t need to change forms of verbs.
When we transform direct speech into reported, we change all grammar structures to past tenses as
we usually start sentences with “Somebody said/told that…”. You need to follow such changes:
Present Simple: Past Simple
The presenter said: “Our TV show The presenter said that their TV show
starts at 7:30 pm on Mondays.” started at 7:30 pm on Mondays.
Present Continuous Past Continuous
My mum told me: “I am watching the My mum told me that she was watching
last episode of that evening TV the last episode of that evening TV
program.” program.
Present Perfect Past Perfect
The presenter said: “The reporter The presenter said that the reporter
Anna Smith has already arrived to the Anna Smith had already arrived to the
residence of the President.” residence of the President.
Past Simple Past Perfect Simple
“I heard this song on the Radio Mix Adam said that he had heard that song
station yesterday and decided to on the Radio Mix station and had
download it”, Adam said. decided to download it.
Past Continuous Past Perfect Continuous
My boss said: “This popular producer My boss said that popular producer had
was promoting his new TV program been promoting his new TV program on
on our web platform!” our web platform.
Past Perfect Past Perfect
The editor told the journalist: “Our The editor told the journalist that their
main competitor had published this main competitor had published that
sensation before our release!” sensation before their release.
will would
The radio presenter said: “We will The radio presenter said that they would
invite the winner of our weekend quiz invite the winner of their weekend quiz to
to our studio to have a tour around.” their studio to have a tour around.
can, may, should, must, have to etc. could, might, should, had to etc.
The journalist said: The journalist said that she had to get an
“I must get an interview with interview with Angelina Jolie as it might
Angelina Jolie as it may help me to help her to get appreciation of her boss.
get appreciation of my boss.”

What is more, to make sentences logically structured, you need to change time markers in this way:
today that day
yesterday the day before
tomorrow the next day
this that
last week/ month/ year the previous week/ month/ year
now at that moment, at that time
