Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer.
TRUE 21-22. The mycelial forms are called yeasts; molds, do not form a mycelium but are easily recognized as fungi.
TRUE 23-24. The term eukaryotic has long been used to denote all organisms that produce O 2, as a byproduct of
cellular respiration.
FALSE 25. A virus called virophages have been discovered that infect other co-infecting viruses.
FALSE 26-27. John Tyndall showed that if dust was ABSENT, flask remained sterile, even if directly exposed to air.
TRUE 28. Joseph Lister provided direct evidence that microorganisms were the causal agents of diseases.
FALSE 29-30. Robert Koch established the relationship between BACILLUS ANTHRACES and ANTHRAX.
31-32. Hot plate is used for consistent heat; used to HEAT SUBSTANCES that are flammable.
FALSE 33-34. Buret is used to measure amounts of liquids, RELEASING SAMLL AMOUNTS of acids or bases into other
solutions.
TRUE 35. Wash bottle is used to wash down pieces of equipment with water or keep materials moist.
ESSAY
Directions. Explain briefly as possible.
36-45. Complete the table below. (10 points).
Distinctive Feautures of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells
Cell Component Prokaryotes Eukaryotes
Nucleus 1. No membrane, single circular 2. Membrane bound
chromosomes
3. Extra chromosomal DNA Often present in form of plasmid(s). 4. In Organelles
Cytoplasmic membrane 5. Contain enzymes of respiration: 6. semipermeable layer not
active secretion of enzyme processing functions of prokaryotic
membrane
Cell Wall 7. rigid layer of peptidoglycan 8. no peptidoglycan
(absence of mycoplasma)
9. sterols Absent (except in Mycoplasma) 10. usually present
46-50. Explain comprehensively the experiment of Louis Pasteur to disprove spontaneous generation theory. (5 PTs.)
The Liquid is sterilized through boiling, and the microbes are destroyed. Dust and microorganisms settled in
bend flask neck and the liquid remained sterile. On the second broken flask the liquid turned cloudy due to
microbial growth because it came contact with dust and microorganisms. As long as dust particles and
microorganisms carried on them are excluded, the contents of the flask would remain sterile.
