HAPPY X-MASS TURN OVER

Question One
a) Distinguish between static and dynamic friction. (02 marks)
b) State three laws which govern the effects of friction between dry surfaces.
(03
marks)
c) Two disc brake pads operate at a mean radius of 0.12m. The force applied
to each pad is 2250N and the coefficient of friction between each pad and
disc is 0.35, when the disc rotates at 2000rev/min. Calculate;-
i. Friction torque acting on the disc. (03 marks)
ii. Work done per minute by this torque. (02 marks)
Question Two
a) A block of mass 10kg rest on a plane inclined at 10oto the horizontal .If
there is no friction between the surfaces. What is the best force which is
necessary to move the block up the plane.
If the coefficient of friction between the block and the plane is 0.2 what
additional force will be required?
(Assuming a mass of 1kg to have a weight of 10N). (10 marks)
Question Three
a) During a constant load, constant-speed test carried out on single –cylinder
four –stroke cycle petrol engine of cylinder bore 75mm and stroke 100mm,
the following reading were recorded. Speed=2500rev/min, i.m.e.p
=860KN/m3net brake load = 75N at effective radius of 0.35m. Determine:-
i. The i.p (03 marks)
ii. The b.p (02 marks)
iii. The f.p (03 marks)
iv. The mechanical efficiency of the engine. (02 marks)

Question Four
a) A car travelling at speed of 60km/h maintain it speed for 2min it’s then
accelerated uniformly to 100km/h in 1min and then immediately retarded
to rest after total 6min. Sketch a velocity time graph for the motion and use
it to find:
i. The distance covered when accelerating. (02 marks)
ii. The distance covered when braking. (03 marks)
iii. Both acceleration and retardation. (02 marks)
iv. The total distance covered. (03 marks)
Question Five
a) A vehicle fitted with tyres having a running radius of 380mm is brought to
rest in a distance of 70mm from a speed of 45km/h. Calculate:-
i. The retardation of the vehicle. (02 marks)
ii. The initial angular velocity of the wheel. (06 marks)
iii. The angular retardation 0f the wheel. (02 marks)
Question six
a) Explain the following processes in shaping metal physical working method
i. Pressing (1 mark)
ii. Rolling (1 mark)
iii. Die- forging (1 mark)
b) With the aid of a sketch explain the operation of the electric arc furnace in
the production of steel (7 marks)
Question seven
a) Explain the following terms in the Process of heat treatment
i. Hardening (1 mark)
ii. Cast-hardening (1 mark)
iii. Isothermal-annealing (1 mark)
b) With the aid of sketch explain the operation of a blast furnace in
production of steel (7marks)
