SCIENCE 5
Quarter 4 – Week 5
Competency: Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the Moon
Lesson: Earth and Space (S5ES-IVg-h-7)

Objective/s:
a. Describe the characteristics of the moon
b. Observe the apparent changes in the shape of the moon
c. Identify the different phases of the moon
d. Illustrate the phases of the moon
e. Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the moon

Concept:

The moon is a dry, airless and a very barren place.

It is 384,400km from the Earth. Since it has no
atmosphere, there is no weather on the moon.
Because of its small size, its gravitational pull is not
strong enough to hold gases.
The moon is the only natural satellite that Earth has.
A satellite is an object that revolves around a larger object.
Moon’s appearance changes from time to time. Though
these changes are often associated with superstitious Figure1

beliefs, it has been scientifically proven that such changes on_right-view_(Clementine_dataset).png
have an impact in our lives.
The gravitational attraction between the moon and earth holds the moon close to
Earth. It also keeps the moon moving around the Earth. It takes the moon about 29
1/2 days to make one complete revolution around the Earth. This period is called a
month. Its period of rotation about its axis and its revolution around the Earth is
the same. Because of this, the same face of the moon always faces the Earth.
When the moon is between the sun and the Earth, the moon seems to be hiding
from the earth. This phase is called new moon. At this phase, the moon is not
visible from earth since the side of the moon that faces the earth is not illuminated.

Phases of the Moon

The moon reflects light from the sun and as it orbits around the Earth,
its surface appears lights to a viewer from Earth. We see this lighted surface
change shape at different times of the month. The apparent changes in the
shape of the moon refer to the phases of the moon.

The moon goes through all its phase every 29 1.2 days. You may have
seen the moon goes through the complete phases in one month. However, it
is not exactly one month. As seen from the Earth, the moon takes 29.53
days to move and return to the same phase. From the outside of the solar
system, the moon completes its cycle in 27.32 days – two days less. Why is
this so? The movement of the Earth changes our angle of vies with respect
to the moon.

The moon cycle consists of the new moon, full moon, first quarter, third
quarter, waxing crescent and waning crescent phases.

Competency/ies: Infer the pattern in the changes in the appearance of the Moon
Study the phases of the moon.

When the moon lies between the sun and the Earth, the side of the moon that
faces Earth is in darkness. The moon is not visible in the sky. This phase is the
new moon.

As the moon continues to move in its orbit around the Earth, the lighted side
of the moon slowly becomes visible. This is called the waxing crescent. During
this time, the lighted part of the moon looks like the letter “C”. The moon is
waxing when its lighted portion appears to grow larger.

The first quarter phase appears the following week. This shows the moon
has traveled one-fourth of the way around Earth and the lighted area appears as
half-moon. On that day, the moon rises at noon and sets at midnight.

When most of the moon is lit and the lighted side is shaped like an egg, it is
called waxing gibbous. During this phase, the moon remains in the sky most of
the night.

In another week, the complete lighted side of the moon is visible in the sky.
This is the full moon. Earth is then somewhere between the moon and the sun.
This time, the moon is on opposite side of Earth, such that the entire lighted half
of the moon is facing us. The dark side of the moon is hidden from our view.

Like the waxing gibbous, more than half of the moon is visible during the
waning gibbous phase. When the lighted area appears to grow smaller, it is said
to be waning.

In the new two weeks,

the part of the moon visible
from Earth slowly gets smaller.
During the last quarter phase,
half of the moon is lighted. On
this day, the moon rises at
midnight and sets at noon.

Then the waning crescent

phase occurs when a small
portion of the moon is lit but
most of the surface is dark.

Eventually, the moon disappears

from view as the new moon.
