Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS
This book contains an overview of the tasks required to implement a safety instrumented system using
DeltaV SIS. The tasks do not include detailed instructions. Detailed information is available in other
sections of the DeltaV SIS Books Online and the DeltaV Books Online.
This book assumes you have general knowledge of the DeltaV software and DeltaV systems. If you do not
have experience using the DeltaV software refer to the DeltaV Getting Started book, then refer to the DeltaV
SIS Overview before reading this book.
Preparing DeltaV SIS
Before you can use DeltaV SIS to implement a safety strategy, there are several things you must do to
prepare. First, install the DeltaV software and set it up for your situation (create users, assign DeltaV keys
and locks, and so on). Install the SIS hardware, enable DeltaV SIS, and grant at least one user the keys to
DeltaV SIS locks.
Refer to the book Installing Your DeltaV Safety Instrumented System Hardware for information on
installing Logic Solver cards and related items.
Enable DeltaV SIS
If you did not enable DeltaV SIS when you installed DeltaV software, enable it now. Click Start | DeltaV |
Engineering | System Preferences and select the Enable DeltaV SIS check box. After clicking OK, a
message appears saying that you must restart the DeltaV Database Server for the changes to take effect.
Enabling DeltaV SIS changes the DeltaV interface, particularly DeltaV Explorer and Control Studio. In
DeltaV Explorer the changes include the addition of the SIS Network, SIS-related Library objects, and Setup
additions in SIS Security, SIS Named Sets, and SIS Alarm Types. In Control Studio the changes include the
ability to configure SIS modules, templates, and composite blocks.
Grant Keys to SIS Locks
Enabling DeltaV SIS creates a tab in the DeltaV User Manager dialog for SIS locks. The process to assign
keys is identical to that used for granting keys to DeltaV locks. See SIS Parameter, Field, and Function
Security for information on SIS locks. See DeltaV User Manager and DeltaV Security for information on the
User Manager.
By default, users are not granted keys to any of the SIS locks. There are three SIS groups (SIS Engineering,
SIS Operate, and SIS Supervise) that are granted some SIS keys by default. You can customize these groups,
create your own groups, or grant keys to individual users as required for your situation.
Access to certain SIS functions should be strictly limited to ensure the integrity of safety instrumented
systems. Only Safety Engineers should be given certain access privileges, such as SIS Can Configure. Other
privileges should be given to personnel on an as-needed basis.
Configuring Logic Solvers and Logic Solver Cards
Inside this topic
Now that you have enabled DeltaV SIS and have given users keys to configure and operate DeltaV SIS,
continue implementing a safety strategy by configuring Logic Solvers and Logic Solver cards.
A Logic Solver is configured in DeltaV Explorer under the SIS Network and ultimately downloaded to a

Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 2 of 16
Logic Solver card. A Logic Solver card is either a physical card inserted into a DeltaV I/O carrier or a
simulated card. For information on simulating a safety system, refer to DeltaV SIS Simulate.
Configure a Logic Solver
The Logic Solver and Logic Solver card are configured in different places in the DeltaV Explorer. After you
create the Logic Solver assign it to the Logic Solver card.
To configure a Logic Solver:
1. Navigate to the SIS Network in DeltaV Explorer.
2. Right-click and select New Logic Solver.
3. On the General page of the Properties dialog that opens, enter a name and description for the Logic
Solver. The default name is SLSn, where n is the next unique number, beginning with 1.
4. Select a Scan Rate from the drop-down list. Refer to the DeltaV SIS Safety Manual for guidelines on
choosing the scan rate.
5. If desired, check the Publish secure parameters globally box.
Note If you want to have secure parameters available to Logic Solvers that are not connected to this
controller's I/O carrier, check this box. The database assigns the Logic Solver a global slot number
ranging from 33 to 64 for publishing secure parameters globally. An error appears if all 32 global slots
have been allocated or if there are already eight Logic Solvers configured to publish globally on this
controller's I/O carrier.
6. If you want to have 16 secure parameters available in this logic solver, select the High-Density Secure
Parameters checkbox.
7. On the Alarms and Displays page, enter or browse for the displays to be used for the Primary Control,
Detail, and Faceplate displays.
8. On the Proof Testing page, set the Proof Test Interval in years and days and set the Proof Test
Reminder Alert in days.
Note For more information on proof testing, refer to the DeltaV SIS Safety Manual.
9. Click OK.
The Logic Solver now appears in the DeltaV Explorer hierarchy under the SIS Network, but the icon is
grayed until it is commissioned to a Logic Solver card.
You can also create a Logic Solver by dragging and dropping a Logic Solver card from an I/O subsystem
onto the SIS Network (which assigns the Logic Solver as well). Right-click the Logic Solver and select
Properties to complete the properties information.
Configure a Physical Logic Solver Card
Create Logic Solver cards under controller I/O subsystems in the Physical Network. The cards can also be
auto-sensed. Logic Solver card icons are different from other card icons. You assign a Logic Solver in the
SIS Network to the physical Logic Solver card.
To create and configure a Logic Solver card:
1. Navigate to the I/O subsystem under a controller.
2. Right-click and select New Card.
3. Select SIS Cards as the card class.
Logic Solver is the only choice in the SIS card class.
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 3 of 16
4. Select the slot position, which should always be an odd number for Logic Solver cards.
Note The Logic Solver card occupies two slots for a simplex and four slots for a redundant Logic
Solver.
5. If the card is redundant, select the Card is redundant check box.
6. Click OK.
Assigning the Logic Solver to the Logic Solver Card
A Logic Solver must be associated with a Logic Solver card. After you download the Logic Solver it runs
the SIS modules you have assigned to it.
Drag-and-drop a Logic Solver (under SIS Network) to a Logic Solver card to assign it. You can also use the
following procedure.
To assign a Logic Solver to a physical Logic Solver card:
1. Navigate to the Logic Solver you wish to assign.
2. Right-click and select Assign...
Note that you use the Unassign... selection on the same context menu to unassign a Logic Solver.
3. Browse to the controller, then the I/O subsystem and Logic Solver card, and click OK.
Note After assignment, the controller node name and physical Logic Solver card name appear in
parentheses next to the Logic Solver under SIS Network and the Logic Solver name appears in
parentheses next to the physical Logic Solver card under I/O.
Commission the Logic Solver
Commissioning a Logic Solver prepares the Logic Solver card to accept a download.
To commission a Logic Solver:
1. Navigate to the Logic Solver to commission under SIS Network.
2. Right-click and select Commission.
Note that you use the Decommission selection on the same context menu to decommission a Logic
Solver.
3. Click Yes on the dialog asking if you want to commission the Logic Solver.
4. Click Confirm on the Confirmation dialog.
After a Logic Solver has been commissioned, it cannot be renamed, unassigned, or upgraded until it is
decommissioned. In addition, the card slot and redundancy of a physical Logic Solver card cannot be
changed if the Logic Solver is commissioned.
Logic Solver Channels
After you have configured a Logic Solver you can configure Logic Solver card channels. You do not need to
configure Logic Solver cards, assign the Logic Solver, or commission the Logic Solver to configure I/O.

Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 4 of 16
Configuring Logic Solver Channels
When you create a Logic Solver under the SIS Network, the channels default to the Undefined channel type.
There are two ways to configure the channel type.
Method 1: Edit the channel Properties:
1. Navigate to a channel in the Channels subsystem under a Logic Solver in the SIS Network.
2. Right-click and select Properties.
3. On the Properties dialog, select the Enabled check box to enable the channel.
4. Enter a description for the channel.
5. Select a channel type.
6. Click the Browse button next to the Device Tag field.
The Browse dialog displays the Unassigned I/O references of the appropriate type for the channel
type.
7. Select an I/O reference and click OK.
8. Click OK on the channel Properties dialog.
Note that you can also use the Configure I/O application within DeltaV Explorer to configure multiple
channels.
Method 2: Bind the Undefined channel to an SIS I/O block:
1. In Control Studio, configure an SIS module with an LSAI or LSDI block.
2. Select the block and right click to open the context menu
3. Select Assign I/O | to Signal Tag.
4. Enter a Device Tag.
If the channel the Device Tag is bound to has type = Undefined, the type is automatically set to match
the I/O block type and the channel is enabled.
SIS Modules
Inside this topic
This section is about creating and configuring SIS modules, secure parameters, secure parameter references,
non-secure parameter references, and module alarms. This section does not explain in detail how to create a
particular module, but lists the tasks required to create an SIS module.
Creating an SIS Module
Create SIS modules with the same tools and techniques that you use to create DeltaV control modules.
To create an SIS module:
1. In DeltaV Explorer, navigate to an area under System Configuration | Control Strategies.
2. Right-click and select New | SIS Module.
3. On the New dialog, enter a name of up to 16 characters.
To start with a copy of an existing SIS module select Start From Existing and browse to an existing
SIS module (or an SIS module template).
4. Click OK to create the SIS module.
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 5 of 16
You can now open the module in Control Studio and add SIS function blocks, set initial parameter values,
and so on.
You can also create an SIS module from Control Studio.
Assigning an SIS Module to a Logic Solver
Assigning SIS modules associates them with Logic Solvers. Downloading the Logic Solvers moves the logic
and parameters configured in the SIS modules to the Logic Solver cards that run the logic.
To assign an SIS module to a Logic Solver:
1. In DeltaV Explorer, navigate to the SIS module.
2. Right-click and select Assign.
3. In the Browse dialog, select the Logic Solver to which you want to assign the SIS module.
If there are enough SIS module slots available on the selected Logic Solver, the module is assigned and a
module reference is created under its Assigned SIS Modules folder. A Logic Solver can have as many as
four assigned SIS modules. An SIS module can only be assigned to a Logic Solver, and non-SIS modules
cannot be assigned to a Logic Solver.
Note The database verifies that there are enough secure parameter slots available when an SIS Module is
assigned to a Logic Solver.
Configuring an SIS Module
Configuring an SIS module is similar to configuring a control module.
To configure an SIS module:
1. Open the SIS module in Control Studio.
2. Drag the function blocks and parameters you need from the various SIS palettes to the diagram.
3. Modify each block's extensible parameters, properties, and so on, as necessary.
4. Wire the blocks, set parameter values as needed, and set the execution order of the blocks.
Assigning an I/O Reference for an SIS Function Block
Assigning I/O references associates field inputs with block parameters.
To assign an I/O reference to a function block in an SIS module:
1. Right-click a block, such as an Analog Input (LSAI) block in the function block diagram.
2. Select Assign I/O to Signal Tag.
3. On the I/O Properties dialog, click Browse to browse for the device signal tag.
You can also assign I/O from the parameter pane.
4. Browse to the SIS Network and double-click the Logic Solver.
Note If the SIS module is assigned to a Logic Solver, the browser starts at the assigned Logic Solver
and all DSTs of the correct type are displayed, as well as those of the Undefined type. You may
browse to other Logic Solvers on the same I/O carrier as the assigned Logic Solver. If the SIS module
is not assigned, the browser starts at the SIS Network, and you need to browse to the correct Logic
Solver.
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 6 of 16
5. Select the DST and click OK.
Note You can enter a DST name in the Object Name box instead of browsing for one. The typed name
cannot be the name of an existing control DST. If the tag does not exist in the database, the DST
appears in the DeltaV Explorer under the Unassigned SIS I/O References.
6. Click OK on the Properties dialog.
Configuring Secure Parameters and References
To transfer data from one SIS module to another, you must configure a Secure Parameter and a Secure
Parameter Reference. This pair (parameter and reference) is required whether the SIS modules are assigned
to the same Logic Solver or different Logic Solvers.
Only Boolean data can be transferred between SIS modules; floating point and integer data cannot be
transferred using the secure parameter and reference.
To configure secure parameters:
1. Drag a Secure Parameter from the Special Items palette to the function block diagram for the SIS
module.
A Properties dialog appears with a parameter type of Boolean with status.
2. Name the parameter, select a parameter category, change the value if desired, and click OK.
3. Wire a Boolean parameter that you want to reference from another module to the secure parameter.
4. Click the Main button, then click Save.
Note If the module is assigned to a Logic Solver card, the database verifies that the Logic Solver has
a secure parameter slot available, and assigns the slot for the parameter. A Logic Solver has slots for
as many as eight secure parameters or 16 high-density secure parameters depending on how the Logic
Solver is configured. An SIS module that is not assigned to a Logic Solver can have as many as 16
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 7 of 16
secure parameters. Such a module can be assigned only to a Logic Solver configured to support high-
density secure parameters.
To configure secure parameter references:
1. Open a different SIS module.
2. Drag a Secure Parameter Reference from the Special Items palette onto the function block diagram.
A Properties dialog opens for the secure parameter reference.
3. Enter a name and select a parameter category.
4. Click the Browse button.
5. Browse to the Secure Parameter that you defined previously and click OK.
Note The database checks to make sure the Secure Parameter is in a Logic Solver on the local peer
bus or in a Logic Solver publishing Secure Parameters globally. Multiple secure parameter references
can refer to the same secure parameter.
6. Click the Main button, then click Save.
Configuring Non-Secure Parameter References
Use a Non-Secure Parameter Reference to bring non-safety critical data from other SIS modules or DeltaV
modules into an SIS module. Because these references are communicated over the I/O carrier, avoid using
Non-Secure Parameter References for safety-critical data. Refer to the DeltaV SIS Safety Manual for more
information.
To configure a Non-Secure Parameter Reference:
1. Open an SIS module.
2. Drag a Non-Secure Parameter Reference from the Special Items palette onto the function block

diagram.
A Properties dialog opens for the Non-Secure Parameter Reference.
3. Enter a name for the parameter reference.
4. Select a parameter type to convert the reference to.
5. Select a parameter category.
6. Click the Browse button.
The Browse dialog contains parameters of the control modules, SIS modules, unit modules, and
equipment modules in the area containing the SIS module. You can browse to modules in other areas.
The parameters available in the browser are restricted to those that can be converted to one of the
three valid SIS parameter types: UInt32 with status, Boolean with status, or a floating-point with
status.
7. Browse for the parameter that you want to reference and click OK.
Note It is also possible to enter a path instead of using the browser. If the path is unresolved, no
warning appears until the SIS Module is verified during download, when it is listed as an unresolved
reference.
8. Click the Main button, then click Save.
Configuring SIS Module Alarms
SIS module alarms are configured in the same way as for control modules.
To configure SIS module alarms:
1. With the SIS module open in Control Studio, right-click in the Alarm View and select Add.
The Alarm Properties dialog appears. The only alarm types in the drop-down list are SIS alarm types.
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 9 of 16
2. Select an SIS alarm type and priority.
3. Enter or browse to an alarm parameter.
4. Click OK.
Configuring Alarms on Bitstring Parameters
If you select or enter a bitstring parameter such as SIF_ALERTS, the Mask... button appears on the Alarm
properties dialog as shown in the previous figure.
To select the bits that cause the alarm to become active:
1. Click the Mask... button to open the Alarm Mask dialog.
file://C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\~hh39B6.htm 05/12/2020
Steps to Implement DeltaV SIS Page 10 of 16
The Alarm Mask dialog contains check boxes for all of the bits of the currently selected parameter.
2. Select the bits you want to activate this alarm.
If any of the conditions you select become active, the alarm becomes active.
3. Close the Alarm Mask dialog.
4. Close the Alarm properties dialog.
Displaying SIS Module References
SIS modules can refer to other module's parameters and have parameters that are referenced by other
modules. You can display a list of database objects that reference or are referenced by an SIS module.
To display references for an SIS module:
1. In DeltaV Explorer, navigate to the SIS module under either the Logic Solver in the SIS Network or
the plant area.
2. Right-click and select References.
A References dialog appears, displaying a list of all the database objects that reference the module or
that are referenced by the module.
3. Click Close.
Saving the SIS Module
After you complete the module configuration, save it to the DeltaV database.
To save the SIS module
1. From Control Studio, click the Main button, then click Save.
You can now close Control Studio.

Downloading the Logic Solver
Inside this topic
All downloads to Logic Solvers are total downloads. Before you can download a Logic Solver you must
unlock it.
Lock and Unlock the Logic Solver
Locking a Logic Solver prevents it from being downloaded. Locking also prevents a user-initiated Logic
Solver switchover. To be able to lock or unlock a Logic Solver you must have the SIS Can Download
privilege. A Logic Solver must be unlocked before you can download to it. If you attempt to download a
locked Logic Solver, you are given the opportunity to unlock the Logic Solver and continue.
From DeltaV Explorer or Diagnostics:
1. Navigate to the Logic Solver in the SIS Network.
2. Right-click and select Lock or Unlock
3. On the confirmation dialog, click Confirm to make the change.
Locking or unlocking a Logic Solver generates an event in the event log.
Download the Logic Solver
Initiate a Logic Solver download from the Logic Solver under SIS Network. Downloading a Logic Solver
sends the configuration information from this Logic Solver to the Logic Solver card (physical or simulated)
that the Logic Solver is assigned to.
All downloads to a Logic Solver are total downloads. Partial downloads are not allowed. A Logic Solver
card cannot be downloaded independent of the Logic Solver. You can download a Logic Solver only by
selecting it under the SIS Network. You cannot download multiple Logic Solvers at the same time. The
steps to download are the same whether the Logic Solver is assigned to a physical Logic Solver card or to
the ProfessionalPLUS workstation.
Downloads to Logic Solvers are matching downloads. Values of certain parameters are preserved on
download to prevent process disruptions.
The download states for Logic Solvers differ from other DeltaV system downloadable items in the following
ways:
Blue triangle - The configuration has changed from the configuration currently in the Logic
Solver.
Note that blue triangles on Logic Solvers do not roll up to the SIS Network because you cannot
download the SIS Network. You can only download individual Logic Solvers.
Yellow triangle overlay - The Logic Solver does not have a configuration.
To download a Logic Solver:
1. Navigate to the Logic Solver in the SIS Network.
2. Right-click and select Download | Logic Solver.
If parameter values have changed since the last download, an Upload dialog appears listing the

changes.
Note If you do not have the key for the SIS_UPLOAD_CONFIG function, press Cancel on the
Upload dialog to continue with the download. Otherwise, you can select the changes to be uploaded, if
there are any, and click OK.
3. If you have the key for the SIS_UPLOAD_CONFIG function (by default, SIS Can Configure), select
the parameter values you want to upload to the database and click OK.
The Upload complete dialog appears.
4. Click Close on the Upload Complete dialog.
The Confirm Download dialog appears.

5. Click Yes on the Confirm Download dialog.
If the Logic Solver is locked, the Logic Solver Locked Dialog appears.
6. Click Unlock and Continue to proceed.
The Exploring DeltaV dialog appears prompting you to Confirm this unlock..
7. Click Confirm to continue.
Note The Logic Solver remains unlocked after the download.
The Downloading Selected Objects dialog appears and the system performs pre-download

configuration checks. If errors are found, the Configuration Check Results dialog that appears informs
you that the download cannot continue.
At this point you can cancel the download, correct the problems found, then re-download.
The download proceeds to the Verifying Configuration phase. If verification errors are found, the
download is not allowed to continue.
If no verification errors are found, the download proceeds through the Generating and Downloading
phases and the Download Complete dialog appears.
Note If the configuration has changed since the last download, the Download dialog includes a
message that a functional test may be required. For more information on using CRCs (cyclic

redundancy checks) to determine if a functional test is required, refer to the DeltaV SIS Safety
Manual.
8. Click Close.
Re-assigning Modules and Downloading
To move modules between Logic Solvers after you have downloaded them, you must perform a specific
sequence of steps. For example, a system contains Logic Solvers SLS1 and SLS2, modules MOD1 assigned
to SLS1, and MOD2 assigned to SLS2.
To move MOD1 to SLS2 and move MOD2 to SLS1 follow these steps:
1. Delete the assignment of MOD1 from SLS1.
2. Download SLS1.
3. Delete the assignment of MOD2 from SLS2.
4. Assign MOD1 to SLS2.
5. Download SLS2.
6. Assign MOD2 to SLS1.
7. Download SLS1.
If you are moving only one module between Logic Solvers you must still perform tasks in a specific order.
For example, one way to move MOD1 from SLS1 to SLS2 is:
1. Drag MOD1 from SLS1 to SLS2.
This reassigns MOD1 from SLS1 to SLS2.
2. Download SLS1.
You must download SLS1 first to confirm the removal of MOD1 from it.
3. Download SLS2.
DeltaV SIS Operator Graphics
Operator graphics that contain DeltaV SIS data are created and used the same way as standard DeltaV
operator graphics. For general information on creating graphics, refer to Operator Basics and Graphic
Configuration.
The DeltaV SIS software includes a number of SIS-specific dynamos, function block faceplates, module
faceplates, and an alarm list display. In addition, use the DeltaV SIS Data Entry Expert to create graphic
objects that can write to SIS modules during runtime. For information on these items, refer to SIS Operator
Graphics.
Diagnosing the Safety Instrumented System
Use DeltaV Diagnostics to diagnose and view status for Logic Solvers, Logic Solver cards and channels,
SISNet Repeaters, and assigned SIS modules. The SIS Network in the left pane of the Diagnostics
application contains the Logic Solvers, Logic Solver I/O, Assigned SIS Modules, and SISNet Repeaters.

Select an item under the SIS Network in the left pane and view diagnostic and status parameters for that
item in the right pane. Use a parameter's What's This help for more information on the parameter. Context
menu commands are available for most items in the SIS Network. Access the context menu commands by
selecting an item and clicking the right-mouse button. Select a Logic Solver under SIS Network and use
context menu commands to:
Launch Process History View in context with the selected Logic Solver.
Go to the assigned Logic Solver card under the Controller I/O.
Rescan a Logic Solver.
Lock and unlock a Logic Solver.
Switch to the Logic Solver's redundant partner.
Force the Logic Solver to reset and perform a power-on test.
Physical Logic Solver cards appears under I/O in the SIS Network. Use the Logic Solver card's context
menu commands to:
Launch Process History View in context with the selected Logic Solver.
Go to the assigned Logic Solver card under the Controller I/O.
Display real-time communication statistics for the card.
Use the SISNet Repeaters' context menu commands to launch the Process History View application. For
individual SISNet Repeaters, the context menu commands can be used to launch the Process History View
application, view real-time communication statistics, and clear saved status information indicated by the
Repeater's DiagStatus parameter (Acknowledge DiagStatus command).
Use the Assigned SIS modules context menu commands to:
Launch Process History View in context with the selected SIS module.
View a module online in Control Studio.
The Logic Solver card also appears under its Controller's I/O in the left pane. At this level, the Go to Logic
Solver context menu command can be used to jump to the card's Logic Solver.
Refer to DeltaV Diagnostics in Books Online and to the Diagnostics online help for complete information on
using Diagnostics.
