FIELD TESTING OF SURFACE PRESSRE CONTROL EQUIPMENT.

Operators should not apply test pressures in the field; field tests should not exceed the
rated working pressure of the equipment. Never confuse “Test Pressure” with “Working
Pressure” (working pressure, rated working pressure, and maximum allowable working
pressure mean the same thing).

In field use, BOP's and accessory items should never experience a test above rated
Working Pressure, unless they experience weld repair. Weld repair may affect material
properties, and such equipment should experience a test to Test Pressure before
leaving the repair shop. Once returned to the field, all tests should not exceed Working
Pressure. Field seal replacements do not require a test above rated Working Pressure.
Each time Operators install BOP's, the BOP ram bores should receive a test to the BOP
rated working pressure.

Do not apply test pressure to any closure parts within equipment units, e.g. BOP rams,
valve gates, choke needles and seats. Hydrostatic pressure applied to these closure
parts should never exceed the equipment rated working pressure.

BASIC FIELD PRESSURE TEST RULES:

(a) The field test pressure shall be equal to the rated working pressure (WP) or
Maximum Allowable Working Pressure (MAWP).

(b) If no wellhead pressure is expected, the equipment shall be tested at 25% of

it’s rated working pressure.

(c) Wellhead equipment shall never be pressurized with high volume pumps,
such as mud pumps or other piston pumps, due to the risk of over pressuring
the system in one pump cycle. Dedicated low volume / high pressure test
pumps and equipment should be used to introduce the test pressure after the
equipment has been filled up with high volume pumps, while allowing all air to
escape.

(d) Pressure testing shall be carried out with a non-volatile, non-compressible

liquid such as glycol or water. The use of flammable liquid or gas or well fluid
is forbidden.

(e) To carry out pressure test, fill the assembled WHE with the appropriate test
liquid [refer to (d)] making sure all air is bled from the system. Apply the test
pressure slowly. Hold the test pressure for at least 3 minutes after the
pressure has stabilized at the chosen test value. Observe for leaks or
pressure drops. Bleed the pressure to zero.

(f) If a leak is found or unexplained pressure drop is experienced during the test,
the test should be stopped, pressure vented, and the defective assembly
repaired or replaced. Never attempt repair a leak while the equipment is under
pressure. The complete pressure test procedure should be repeated after repair.
