OPERATION

It is assumed that all personnel using this equipment and/or manual will be trained and familiar with
Wire line operations and equipment.. All personnel should read this operating manual and familarize
themselves with the operation and maintenance of the equipment before starting any job.

Condition of the packing material, bushings and blowout plug, and operation of the hydraulic packing nut
Should be checked frequently. Packing wear will vary depending on type of service, well pressure etc.

Pack-off around the wire line is affected by pushing the upper bushing downward compressing the
packing around the wire. This can be done by using hydraulic packing nut in hydraulic version of stuffing
box. This operations manual will concentrate on the hydraulic version, of both 5k and 10k stuffing box

The Blowout Plug is normally free to move up or down within it’s chamber.Should the line break or the
packing blowout, the blowout plug will be carried upward by the velocity of the well fluids, and in turn
compress against the bottom of the lower bushing. The elastomer in the blowout plug will extrude inward
effecting a seal.

FUNCTIONAL AND HYDROSTATIC TESTING

The packing nut operation and a hydrostatic body test can be effected simultaneously.
Install either a piece of wire or a test rod of the same diameter in the stuffing box.

CAUTION: Wire should be securely tied around the rope socket bead, or rod should have a ‘do-nut’ on
lower end, to prevent wire / rod from blowing out.

Install a test plug in the union. Pressure the hydraulic nut. The amount of pressure required will be depend
on the type of packing being used. Apply test pressure to the test plug.

DO NOT STAND IN LINE WITH THE TOP OF THE STUFFING BOX.Have it aimed at a test wall or
upward. Hold test pressure 15 minutes. No leakage around packing is allowed. If leakage occurs increase
packoff pressure.

If leakage continues, packing must be replaced.

After successfully testing hydraulic packing nut and pressure testing body, check the bearings in
both the sheave bracket and sheave are free turning and without excessive play. Operation of the
blowout plug cannot be checked, therefore it is important that the condition the plug be visually
examined, and the plug replaced if required

The hydraulic packing nut is normally pressured only to the point where pack-off occurs.
Do not overpressure as excessive pressure can cause the packing to extrude in to the bushings.

FIELD OPERATIONS

To Thread wire between Guard (30) and Sheave (21) remove the key (35) by pushing the knob to
compress the locking ball. The Sheave Guard (30) will come out because of the spring (26)
tension.

Thread wire between guard (30) and Sheave (21). Loose pan head screws (32) and adjust the
Guard (30) by adjusting the cap screw (33). So that wire cannot come out of Sheave (21), but
should not be tight against the wire. With wire in place Sheave (21) should be free to turn
without wire movement.

To thread wire through the stuffing box it will be necessary to straighten the wire somewhat.
If the wire catches in the Blowout plug (2) remove the Blowout plug retainer (3) and Blowout
plug(2), thread them in to the line, and re-install in body (1)

Insert wire in rope socket and tie knot. Connect to tools and lubricator.

Apply pack-off pressure to hydraulic packing nut prior to pressuring lubricator.

Adjust pack-off pressure to allow tools to run into well without pack-off leakage.

MAINTENANCE

Routine maintenance consists of replacing the packing (36), Blowout plug (2), and less
frequently the Upper Bushing (11) and the lower bushing (7). Frequency of replacement will
depend on the service.

Annually, seals in Hydraulic packing Nut Assembly and Body should be replaced.

Sheave Bearings should be periodically checked foe excessive play and replaced when they start
to loosen. This may be as often as yearly if usage is high, or they may last several years.
SheaveBracket Bearings will last indefinitely if kept clean and lubricated. However,if they
become too loose, replace as necessary.

TO CHANGE PACKING AND / OR BUSHINGS

Remove the Lock screw (17) ¼”X 20 UNC (2 no’s) and remove the Hydraulic Packing Nut
assembly from Body (1). Remove the Packing Housing (8) from Housing Piston (15).
Remove the piston (12) and Compression Spring (10), remove the Set Screw(13) 3/16”-24 UNC
from Piston (12) ,remove the Lower Bush (7) and Upper Bush (11), Packings (36) can now
pushed upward / downward out of body by using 3/8” Teflon / Wooden dowel.

Inspect Bushings for wear, they should fit evenly around wire to prevent packing wear and
extrusion and replace as required..
Replace the Packings (36) O-ring and Backup rings (14) (16) (9) on Piston housing and packing
housing,(8) and reassemble in reverse order.

Inspect Blowout plug (2) for bore and flange wear, replace if worn, clean Blowout plug retainer
(3) checking that the 3 bypass holes are clear , reinstall Blowout plug(2) and Blowout plug
retainer (3) , note that cone end of Blowout plug (2) points upward towards packing.

BEARING REPLACEMENT

To replace Sheave Bearing, remove Nylock Nut (25) and plain Washer (24) from Sheave bolt
(23).Remove Sheave bolt. Slide Sheave (21) out of bracket. Thrust ball Bearing (5) can now be
removed from Sheave (21).

To Replace Sheave Bracket Bearing (22), Remove Nut (6) from Body (1) Remove Bracket (38)
and Shield & seal deep groove Ball Bearing and Inner Ring .

Grease and Reassemble in reverse order.
