1-Page Painting Planner

How to use the Planner: When you start a new painting, run through this planner and see if
you can comfortably answer all questions. This will help you clarify your vision of the painting
and weed out subjects you shouldn’t paint. If you are new to painting, you may want to print this
out and physically write answers to each question.
------------------------------
Q: What is the big idea or focal point? (That one reason why you want to paint this
subject.)

Q: What are the other key features?

Q: Are there any challenging aspects of the subject?

Q: What is your overall strategy? (How will you paint the subject? In what order of parts?
How will you start? How will you finish?)

Q: Can you see the subject as a finished painting? What does that finished painting
look like?

Q: What colors do you need on your palette? (Consider any unusual one-off colors.)

Q: What tools do you need?

Q: Are there any master artists or artworks you can draw inspiration from? (Note,
this isn’t about copying.)
