Sticker: Thumbnail Sketches

● I Can visually explore my best brainstorm ideas by creating thumbnail sketches.

● I Can evaluate my work using defined assignment criteria.

● In this assignment, you will continue to use the creative process to help you develop your
idea(s) for the design challenge. You should have found your top idea during the
brainstorming assignment, and you wrote a statement about your intent for solving the
design challenge. Now, you will need to create more than 8 thumbnail sketches showing
possible solutions to the design challenge for this assignment.

● Self-evaluation is a critical part of the creative process. You need to be able to

HONESTLY assess your work which will help you improve.
● You have created more than 8 thumbnail sketches of your best brainstorm idea.

● Each one of your thumbnail sketches is different (you explored ALL design possibilities).

● You have uploaded the picture(s) of your work to canvas.

*These are the criteria that your grade for this assignment will be based on. Each is worth 1 (one)
point.

● The best idea from your brainstorm

● Thumbnail sketch graphic organizer
● Glue
● Pencil
● Notebook
● For this assignment, please make sure that you carefully read and follow ALL of the
instructions below.

Begin by taking a moment to think about your statement from the brainstorm session. How can you
visually communicate (show) your intent? Remember the examples that you saw and found during
your research- how did they communicate their intent? Follow these suggestions as you begin to
explore different ideas for possible design challenge solutions (REMEMBER YOUR INTENT).

While you are creating sketches of these ideas, keep the following things in mind:

● Keep the sketches small (why they're called "thumbnails").

○ Use these sketches to visually "see" your ideas.
● Get ideas down quickly.
○ Don't worry about details- just enough to see the rough design.
● Each sketch is a different variation of your idea (DON"T CREATE A BUNCH OF SKETCHES OF
THE SAME IDEA!).
○ Explore ALL variations of possible solutions to the design challenge visually
(remember: your best idea might be idea #20).
● Let new ideas happen.
○ Be open to new ideas.
○ Thumbnail each new idea.

As you are working, don't stop at 9- your best idea might be #10, #13, or #20!! Keep sketching until
you are COMPLETELY out of ideas.

● You will be using the following graphic organizer as you work on this assignment (glue it into
your notebook):

English Graphic Organizer Organizador gráfico español

Now that you have explored ALL of your possible ideas for the design challenge (if you haven't, keep
sketching!!), you will need to choose the best thumbnail sketch. Similar to when we narrowed down
our brainstorm ideas, you will need to ask yourself the following questions about your thumbnail
sketches to determine which design idea you will develop further:

● Which idea are you most excited about?

● Which idea communicates your intent the most?
● Which idea has the most visual interest?

○ Visual interest is where the design is interesting to look at- you feel like people will
WANT to look at the design!

Circle the sketch that meets ALL of these criteria. Remember- don't choose an idea that you aren't
too excited about, doesn't clearly communicate your intent, or that doesn't have much visual
interest!

Take a GOOD picture of ALL of the pages of your thumbnail sketches and submit them below. Also,
don't forget to answer the Yes/No questions to determine how many points you earned on this
assignment.
