Senior Vice President This study examines the impacts of social movements through a multi-

early 1960s through the early 1980s. By examining this historically important

case, I clarify the process by which movements transform social structures and

SHS Coodinators
the constraints' movements face when they try to do so. The time period

Subject Coordinators
studied in this dissertation includes the expansion of voting rights and gains in
black political power, the desegregation of public schools and the emergence

of white-flight academies, and the rise and fall of federal anti-poverty programs.
I use two major research strategies: (1) a quantitative analysis of
county-level data and (2) three case studies. Data have been collected from
archives, interviews, newspapers and published reports. This dissertation
challenges the argument that movements are inconsequential. Indeed, some
view federal agencies, courts, political parties, or economic elites as the agents
driving institutional change. Typically these groups acted in response to
movement demands and the leverage brought to bear by the civil rights
movement. The Mississippi movement attempted to forge independent
structures for sustaining challenges to local inequities and injustices. By
propelling change in an array of local institutions, movement infrastructures
had an enduring legacy in Mississippi.

INTRODUCTION

A new (novel) coronavirus was discovered in late December 2019 in Wuhan,

China, that causes severe respiratory infections, including pneumonia, and
ISO 9001:2015 Certified
consequently, changed everyone's lives. The COVID-19 virus wreaked havoc
on educational institutions across the country and around the world. It grew
DR. DENNIS MAYER A. TAN into a global health crisis that affected people of all ages, genders, and social
President/CEO
backgrounds. The world came to a halt, and the economy collapsed as all
DR. NORA VELMA M. GAYOD businesses closed their doors. Most countries shut down their schools,
Senior Vice President
colleges, and universities to prevent the coronavirus from spreading. The crisis
DR. FRANCISCO S. CABRERA, JR.
VP Academic Affairs impacted not only the health and education sectors but also the entire
MS. MARIA NONA S. GRAFANE
economy. The interruptions were unexpected because classes were still in
Principal
session when the Philippine government proclaimed a shutdown of all
educational institutions. During the midst of the pandemic, educational
SHS Coodinators
institutions offered distance learning as a viable option. The urgent task and
Subject Coordinators strategy are to keep the schools open while maintaining high-quality education
for all students. Thus, in the education sector, the shift to online distance

learning is seen as the new normal, enabling adaptation to the new
environment.

will indeed be used as platforms for gaining knowledge and developing peer
interactions in online distance learning. Students differ in a variety of ways,
including their socioeconomic background and life privileges. Hence, all
students, regardless of their differences, face the same academic challenges.
During the pandemic, each student goes through a wide range of events and
experiences. There were numerous flaws that each student encountered
throughout online distance learning. For instance, lacking necessary
equipment, such as laptops, computers, and other electronic devices will result
in difficulties in keeping up with the discussion. Another issue arises when
students do not have a reliable internet connection, which might result in
learning disruptions. In addition, students' responsibilities at home and school
will overlap to the extent that they may be assigned an additional task that may
cause distractions during online classes. Furthermore, the noises and events
occurring behind the screen had caused a major impact on the student's
education, performance, and mental well-being.

Lived experiences is the representation of a person's life events and decisions,

as well as the knowledge gained from those experiences and choices. The
process of the delivery of these lived experiences is by exploring experiences
of the subjects, their perceptions, and practices. There are various factors that
ISO 9001:2015 Certified affect the live experiences of students behind the screens. These are the
connectivity, computer literacy, lifestyle, self-efficacy, finances, environment,
and educational adjustments. These factors can lead to either distraction or
DR. DENNIS MAYER A. TAN
President/CEO motivation to the students. Since the pandemic has affected the ebb and flow
of lives of the students, lots of changes have taken place and almost everyday,
DR. NORA VELMA M. GAYOD
Senior Vice President students experience these phenomena. According to Hsieh and Cho (2011),
DR. FRANCISCO S. CABRERA, JR.
Online learning and resources have dramatically transformed brick and mortar

pedagogical approaches. Learners favored online classrooms because of
MS. MARIA NONA S. GRAFANE access and participation, time and space convenience, and cost savings,
Principal
according to Shetty, Shilpa, Day, and Kavya (2020). On the other hand,
students believe that physical and outdoor activities, collaborative activities,

and the development of communication skills are best done in a face-to-face

setting. Also, students that participated in online learning mode faced
Academic Staff interrupted or lost wifi connections, isolated physical locations, and eyestrain
from long virtual classes.

The COVID-19 outbreak has caused chaos in schools around the country as
well as a country’s economy. To prevent the virus from spreading, many
countries have begun to transition face-to-face classes to online distance
learning in a rush to keep up with impending years and graduating students. In
many countries around the world, online distance learning is the new typical
educational system, especially for those countries that is still at high COVID-19
cases or percentage. Taking an online class is not a new notion in the
Philippines. Even when children are at school, interactive media (Kahoot,
Genyo, and other similar programs) allows them to be entertained while
learning about the day's curriculum. With the coronavirus outbreak, however,
online sessions are largely being held for the purpose of safety and precaution
of the staffs and students wellbeings. Different learning modes are being
employed to gain new knowledge in the new normal education, including
asynchronous online forums and synchronous virtual meetups. Because of the
multiple problems that each student encountered during online distance
learning, the knowledge they desired was much more difficult to obtain, the
once built self-efficacy became to crumble down as their mental health took a
turn for the worse. During the pandemic, every student has felt a tremendous
amount of uncertainty, anxiety, boredom, loneliness, and instability.

Students dealing with the new normal setup have struggled academically due
to the consequences of distant learning, social isolation, and the general
uncertainty surrounding education, social, and professional life. Many students'
lives are affected by this new normal education system, which has a significant
ISO 9001:2015 Certified impact on their academic performance and experiences behind the screen in
online distance learning. Besides this, their financial status and home status
were also affected when the pandemic hit us during the early months of 2020.

your needs, comfort, and time. Also, these online classes can be a big help to
Subject Coordinators fit better into our schedule. If you lead a busy life and want to advance in your
job, taking an online class at your speed is a smart approach to achieve your
Academic Staff
goals. Although online distance learning has several advantages, it also has
some disadvantages. Some of these drawbacks include the fact that the
connections are not as strong as in face-to-face sessions. Some schools offer
a wide range of opportunities for in-person social networking opportunities. It is
possible to improve your educational foundations by having face-to-face talks
with your teachers and peers. Online classes can also be problematic for some
students due to time variations. The structure of online education negates
many of those potential benefits.

Due to various factors and influence of social media and the pandemic to the
world, to various fields of the industries, economies, lives, and countries that
was affected, this study aims to provide reasonable deduction about the
experiences of students, their mental health, emotional health, and physical
health. It is important for everyone to understand that every human being’s
mental health is as important as their physical health, especially the students
as they are our future, kids, and they face immense pressure from their
families to be the best and judgment from their peers because of their want to
express themselves, their actions, or whole persona. Which is why, this study
was made to showcase the importance of the STEM Senior High School
Students’ lives during the pandemic in an online distance learning
environment. The researcher hope to see reasonable results and show our
findings to everyone about this study.

pandemic. Simultaneously, this research will go over how the pandemic affects
the lives of the students and coping mechanisms that will assist them in
improving their lifestyle. We will not only focus on the mental health factors
associated with education of the students in this study. Hence, we will also
focus on the experiences and struggles that vary to each student within the
time span in an online distance learning during COVID-19 pandemic.

Furthermore, this research will concentrate on what is happening behind the

screens of each senior high school student, particularly STEM students. At the
same time, the research will look at how the new learning education system
has affected each student's academic performance since the viral pandemic,
also known as the COVID-19, began.

The lives of every student’ are unknown and unique, differently lived and they
face challenges that are similar and different from ours. With more students
entering the STEM strand, it is expected that they are confident in both
intellectual and street smarts. This helps them project and develop college-
ready proficiencies, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Due to the influence of
various factors affecting a student’s life in both academic stands, social stand,
and family affiliations, it can be deduced that with CoVid-19 happening, it
played a huge impact on their lives as they start an unprepared transition from
face-to-face learning to online learning.

Many people feel that online learning is just as good as traditional learning;
nevertheless, the lives and experiences of each student behind the screen in
the STEM strand are vastly different from traditional learning experiences. The
new normal school system affects many students' lives and has a huge impact
on their academic success. In the new normal school system, every student
ISO 9001:2015 Certified
experienced anxiety, melancholy, and loneliness. Students dealing with the
new normal school system have struggled academically as a result of the
implications of distant learning and the social isolation they are facing. Some

terms of time management and efficacy. However, they also have negative

performance.
MS. MARIA NONA S. GRAFANE
Principal
To sum up, students, particularly STEM students, lived unique experiences
and challenges during online classes at the time of the pandemic. Although,
students who choose the STEM strand are expected to have high aspirations
SHS Coodinators
and to be confident in both academic and street intellect. This strand can assist
Subject Coordinators
students in learning and developing their self-efficacy and personality, as well
as increasing the information that will be useful when they enter college. The
Academic Staff new normal school system is known as online distance learning, in which
students endure stress, misery, and loneliness, resulting in depression and
social alienation. However, STEM students have both negative and positive
reactions to online distance learning. Online lessons, according to some
students, are advantageous in terms of time management and efficacy.
Inadequate internet connection and material delivery, on the other hand, will
have a negative impact on their education. Yet, the shift from face-to-face
classes to online distance learning has a significant impact on each student's
academic performance.

With the pandemic taking a huge toll on everyone’s lives and the world in 2020
up until now, the researchers of this study were able to get more views and
information about the experience of STEM students in an online learning
environment through an online questionnaire. An online questionnaire
transpired under today’s circumstances, the teacher’s guidance, and law. With
this, the researchers were able to uphold and create conclusions and
hypotheses that are crucial to both the study, readers, and researchers.

DR. FRANCISCO S. CABRERA, JR.

The global school system faces tremendous hurdles as a result of the ongoing
VP Academic Affairs COVID-19 pandemic. The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural
MS. MARIA NONA S. GRAFANE
Organization (UNESCO) is a global organization. By July 2020, the United
Principal
Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
estimates nationwide school closures in 111 countries, affecting about 1.07
SHS Coodinators billion students, or over 61 percent of the world's student population. To
provide students with ongoing instruction, traditional brick-and-mortar schools
Subject Coordinators
are being compelled to change into full-time virtual schools (Van Lancker &
Academic Staff
Parolin, 2020). As a result, learners will have to adapt to the new situation from
face-to-face learning to entirely online learning, with synchronous virtual
meetings, social media, and asynchronous online forums serving as the
primary venues for knowledge sharing and peer communication.

Online learning solves the shortcomings of traditional classroom education,

particularly the lack of flexibility in resource use, such as time and spatial
scheduling (Rosenlund and Damark-Bembenek, 1999). The benefits of using
computer-assisted tools have been discussed in the literature, and they include
convenience in providing access to information, flexibility in adapting to the
educational needs of students, and expenditure in providing educational
opportunities to large numbers of students (Olinda et al., 2001; Herrin, 2001;
Ribbons, 1998; Soon et al., 2000; Cuellar, 2002). According to Rosenlund and
Damark-Bembenek (1999), the use of information technology in education
opens up new possibilities for providing virtual educational experiences. Even
though some research shows that online learning has advantages, some
disagree. The availability and cost of current computer hardware and software,
as well as the speed and consistency of Internet connection, are critical factors
in the success of online distance learning (Cragg et al., 2003; Atack and
Rankin, 2002; Billings et al., 2001; Scollin, 2001). Computer proficiency and
technical support, according to several academics, are critical for efficient
online learning. It has been noted that for beginners, confronting technological
devices was more unpleasant and time-consuming than the actual education
activities at the start of a course (Atack, 2003; Atack and Rankin, 2002; Billings
et al., 2001; Scollin, 2001).

According to the findings of the study "Experiences of online learning: students'

perspective," the most commonly mentioned fulfilling component of online
learning was its flexibility in learning, which allowed students to study at their
own pace and at a time that was convenient for them (Heidari and Galvin,
2002; Bentley et al., 2003; Rouse, 2000; Kozlowski, 2002)

online learning early in 2020 to continue every student’s studies whilst waiting
for the pandemic to calm down. Students who are adjusting to the new
educational environment have varying challenges on online distance learning.
SHS Coodinators
Roark (2020) stated the challenges and growing pains in online classes such
Subject Coordinators
as internet access, device access, the content review process, student and
teacher adjustments. According to Shapiro, it's possible to style a high-quality
Academic Staff online course, but the suddenness of the transition to online instruction didn't
allow for everyone to adjust all at the same time. In addition to the faculty's
struggles with course curriculum and teaching techniques, students' mental,
emotional, social, and physical well-being has deteriorated, affecting their
attention and focus in class and in their study self-efficacy. These are just a
couple of the many obstacles that remote learning faces.

Compared to traditional classroom learning, online learning has various

advantages. The removal of time and space barriers is one of them. Learning
takes place in online learning settings within a flexible duration that a student
develops without being constrained by the schedule of a pre-set classroom or
institution (Beam, 1998; Micks, 2001). Furthermore, web platforms provide
more control over the instructional pace and which classroom activities are
more suited to engage in (Alexandra, 1996). Also, e-learning provides each
learner with the same educational content whenever they require it (Allen
2003; Bullen, 2003; Piskurich, 2003). E-learning, on the other hand, may lack
genuine connections between teachers and students. Several research has
demonstrated the favorable impacts of e-learning from the perspectives of
learners or students (Gautam and Tiwari, 2016; Martnez-Caro, Cegarra-
Navarro, and Cepeda-Carrión, 2015; Chang, 2016). For example, e-learning
enables students to observe a variety of adaptable learning methods while also
reducing the need for travel. Learners can gain a greater understanding of
knowledge by participating in classroom activities that include interactive
videos (Gautam and Tiwari, 2016; Martnez-Caro, Cegarra-Navarro, and
Cepeda-Carrión, 2015). This enables students to respond quickly to activities.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

This part presents the processes and procedures utilized by the researcher
in crafting this research paper.
ISO 9001:2015 Certified
• RESEARCH METHOD
In order to see with high accuracy and precision the lived experiences and
DR. DENNIS MAYER A. TAN
viewpoints of STEM students, this study conducted a qualitative research
President/CEO approach. Qualitative research as stated by Bhandari (2020), aims to describe
DR. NORA VELMA M. GAYOD certain aspects of a specific phenomenon. It is more comprehensive and often

opinions.

• RESEARCH DESIGN
Descriptive design was used to evaluate and describe existing phenomena of
SHS Coodinators
the study. According to Fluet (2021), it focuses on answering the basic
Subject Coordinators
questions about “what, who, when, where, and etc.” which is vitally important to
meet the objectives of the study and the statement of the problem of the study.
Academic Staff Additionally, descriptive research aims to portray a condition, in a precise and
proficient way. Furthermore, it seeks to reflect naturalistic data with no
intervention or alteration of the collected data, and only factual evidence from
the collected data is required to correctly present the actions of the phenomena
of the study. The researchers utilized this type of descriptive method because
this study is concerned with the opinions, feelings and preferences of the
systematically chosen respondents to greatly comprehend the gathered data.

• RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY

The respondents of this study were the STEM Senior Highschool students of
Dr. Carlos S. Lanting College and from other schools. Researchers of this
study were able to get 25 responses from various STEM students.

• SAMPLING
The researchers used two kinds of sampling methods; convenience sampling
and systematic sampling procedure. Systematic sampling as stated by Hayes
and Westfall (2021), refers to a probability inspecting technique in which the
researcher selects components from an objective population by selecting a
ISO 9001:2015 Certified
random point and selecting individuals after a set of 'sampling intervals'.
Meanwhile, convenience sampling is non-probability sampling in which
participants are sampled solely because they are convenient data sources for
DR. DENNIS MAYER A. TAN
President/CEO researchers.
DR. NORA VELMA M. GAYOD
Senior Vice President The researchers employed an online survey in the form of a questionnaire to
conduct and collect more information about this study of STEM students' lives
DR. FRANCISCO S. CABRERA, JR.
VP Academic Affairs and experiences. The questionnaire is divided into three sections, the first
section contains our respondents' information. The researchers' approach for
MS. MARIA NONA S. GRAFANE
Principal creating profiles is to figure out the demographics of the respondents. The
second section has questions with yes, no, and maybe answers. In the final
section, there are essay-style questions. We used dichotomous questions and
SHS Coodinators
percentages, the most prevalent sort of question found in questionnaires, to
Subject Coordinators ascertain our respondents' answers to online distance learning.

• DATA GATHERING TECHNIQUE
For the objective of this study, online surveys in the form of a questionnaire
were used for the senior high school STEM students. The research was
conducted using an online questionnaire that provided as a guide for the
researchers to examine and comprehend the lives and experiences of each
STEM student in the new normal education system from the perspective of the
respondents. Online questionnaires aim to identify the student’s lives,
experiences, strengths, shortcomings, and certain conflicts related to their
journey behind the screen in an online distance learning. Online surveys are
the most cost-effective and can reach the most number of individuals in the
shortest amount of time when compared to other mediums. These have a far
broader scope than conventional data collection methods.

This part of the study determines the processes of data gathering techniques
utilized by the researcher. Gathering of data can be done through the following
techniques:

1. Questionnaire
1.1 Researcher-made
1.2 Standardized
