 Methodology:

Construction activities for Bridge over Aramco Corridor as follows:

5.1 Geotechnical Recommendation for Foundation (By 3rd party)

a. According to geotechnical report conducted by (OSAIME ENGINEERING OFFICE)

(rev.03) ground water was encountered in all the drilled boreholes BH-29, BH-
30, BH-48, BH-51, and 40 MT deep at approximate depth ranging from 2.009 to
7.803 m below the existing ground surface. It should be mentioned that the
water level is unstable and is subjected to seasonal variations. However, no
cavities were encountered in any of the boreholes to the drilled depths.

b. According to geotechnical report no. 2019/122, dated 20 December 2020,

Rev.03, titled geotechnical investigation for construction of roads & utilities for
realigned Tama from SWCC corridor to Maajiz road project no. PIC I-T-7062
Yanbu, kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the recommended net allowable bearing
pressure is (325 kpa) and the modulus of soil subgrade reaction is (19500 kpa/m)
for all foundations.

c. Base on design details provided by SAMA. i.e. structures, planned foundation

type, size, depth and design pressure. The structures are to be founded on
shallow foundation. Accordingly, analysis has been carried out considering the
available data pertaining to each structure of project site and recommendation
presented in tables hereunder. We have applied LRFD design approach for
bridge foundation. Accordingly, analysis has been carried out considering the
overall ground conditions encountered at bridge location and foundation details
provided. Following LRFD design approach, bearing capacities are estimated for
both service limit and strength limit sate.

d. Base on the design information provided by bridge designer, i.e foundation sizes,
anticipated structural loads and finished grade levels. Also based on the
stratigraphy encountered, GWT and overall site conditions, the bridge
abutments can be supported on shallow foundations. Accordingly, we have
considered the bridge foundations to be supported on Mat/ Raft for the given
sizes.

10 | P a g e
A footing of 5m x 5m or greater is generally considered as mat/raft foundation. A
structure supported on a mat foundation can withstand greater settlements
than one supported on spread footings as mat foundation tend to bridge over
heterogeneity of the soil and the average settlement does not approach the
extreme values of spread footings. Therefore, the LRFD value for mat foundation
can be greater than that for footings. For mat foundations on sand or gravel,
Terzaghi & Peck suggest an increase in LRFD value than those for footings.

Thus, settlements of the order of 50mm can be usually considered acceptable in

case of rafts. Further, it is general practice to provide sufficient depth (not less
than 0.8m) of foundation for mats so that the confinement (surcharge) is
enough to ensure that aspects such as bearing pressures; total settlement at
center & edges; protection from possible soil erosion and structural stability are
taken into consideration.

5.2 Site Survey

i. Adequate survey equipment, maintained and calibrated on a regular basis
by Contractor for all survey activities during the installation process.
ii. Prior to any installation activities on site, a request for a joint survey from
the Contractor is initiated, after that raising a RFI for the survey report for
the Consultant approval. Preliminary inspection of the area shall be
conducted by Contractor’s Survey team to determine the Stationing and
Control Points and Bench Marks used by Contractor in locating coordinates
or grid lines, which is going to be the basis of the general layout. The survey
initially prepared by Contractor contains the building benchmarks which are
necessary in lay-outing and setting works.
iii. A reference gridline and level mark shall be established by Contractor’s
Survey team starting from the reference point. During the course of the
survey, Contractor’s Survey team shall be performed to settle any survey
discrepancy at the earliest stage possible. Actual dimension of the perimeter
shall be verified. In case of considerable variation from the pre-set
conditions were found, it shall be reported to the Contractor’s Project
Manager for immediate rectification.
11 | P a g e
iv. Setting a secondary control or offset points (if and as required), which will
consist of a series of permanent control stations that are established.
v. Control points shall be marked for each location as required to prevent
accumulation of errors; as discrepancies obtained in one location can be
distributed equally for each span width, without affecting the adjacent axes.

5.3 Earthworks
Will be carried out according to Specifi cati on 02200 .

A. Survey Setting out

 Setting out of the proposed Bridge position will be provided as per
the latest approved shop drawings.
 Marking shall be done according to excavation site area with
coordinates by permanent marker or will use steel pins (steel bars

along the longitudinal direction.
 Surveyor will recheck to ensure that finish levels are within the
acceptable tolerance. Any discrepancy in the levels, action notice is
issued and works is rectified as per requirement.

B. Utilities Scanning
 Will be carried out according to RC/ARAMCO
 Standard & Procedure for ‘Manual Excavation Vicinity of
Underground Utilities Aramco Pipeline. Some part (if needed) of
area needs sheet piling to secure Aramco existing Aramco Pipe.
ARAMCO Land Use (LUP) Permit is required. SAMA will coordinate
all Utilities authorities of ARAMCO before start any work.
C. Dewatering
12 | P a g e
Reference specification section 02200 - earthwork.
1. Prior to foundation excavation, the EPC contractor (SAMA) shall install
a continuous groundwater pumping system to maintain the
groundwater level at least 500 mm below the bottom of excavation.

2. The dewatering shall remain continuously (24 hours a day) in effect

until foundation completion.

3. The excavation is completely backfilled and compacted; and sufficient

permanent dead load has accumulated to resist 150 percent of the
maximum anticipated hydrostatic uplift pressure.

4. If the dewatering does not comply with these notes and groundwater
drips through the subgrade or otherwise enters the excavation, then
the EPC contractor (SAMA) shall perform the following
5. Works at his own time and expense.
6. Re-design and re-construct the continuous groundwater pumping
system to lower the groundwater level to at least 500 mm below the
bottom of excavation.
7. Over-excavate an additional 200 to 300 mm of material if needed.
8. Proof-roll the newly exposed subgrade to detect all loose and soft
spots. Where loose and/or soft spots are encountered, undercut and
replaced with roller-compacted crushed stone (20 mm size) placed in
100 mm maximum thick lifts. Fully wrap the crushed stone layers with
geotextile fabric (e.g., mirafi 140N) to prevent the intrusion of fines.
9. Following the proof-rolling, undercutting, and replacing, thoroughly
and uniformly compact, the entire subgrade to density the underlying
layers to create a solid platform for filling, operations and foundation
construction.

D. Temporary/permanent shoring, bracing, and supports:

1. The contractor shall design and install temporary and/or permanent shoring,
bracing, and supports in accordance with OSHA standards 29 CFR part 1926 -

pumping system (if required) to maintain the groundwater level at least 500
mm below the bottom of the lowest excavation. The dewatering shall remain
continuously in effect until the structural fill operations are completed.

d. Strip all existing top soil, fill, organic, loose, disturbed, and otherwise unsuitable
materials.

e. Following striping, over-excavate any remaining loose soil. Note that this over-
excavation is a minimum and is not to be construed as limiting in any way the
amount of over-excavation necessary to remove all existing top soil, fill, and
organic, loose, disturbed, and otherwise unsuitable materials and reach
underlying competent soil bearing strata.

f. Following over-excavation, proof-roll the exposed subgrade to detect all loose

and soft spots. Where loose and/or soft spots are encountered, undercut and
replaced with compacted select (structural) fill.
14 | P a g e
g. Following proof-rolling, undercutting, and replacing, thoroughly and uniformly
compact the subgrade to density the underlying layers to create a solid
platform for filling operations.

h. Place select (structural) fill in lifts having a maximum loose thickness of 200 mm
