correct answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.
As customers choose brands based on how they make them feel, rather than their actual products or
services, there is an intrinsic advantage to those organizations who use designed experiences as a weapon to cut
through the most competitive of markets. Those that don't, operate in what we call the "experience gap”, the
space between them and their customer's expectation of them. Make no mistake, in our high paced and digitally
connected economies, the experience gap is driving markets, fast.
For example, take Instagram and Twitter. These brands filled the demand for a whole new human
experience that did not exist before the evolution of digital technologies enabled that. They were pioneers, and
there were no established players to unseat. But we are also seeing a similar dynamic in existing industries. New
entrants are coming in and taking the space, also using whole new experiences, purely because the incumbents left
the door open.
Closer to home, this can be seen with Australian neobanks who are giving customers a better experience
than the incumbents. Robert Bell is the CEO at neobank 86400. He says banking has already become quite
complicated and he wanted to make a change. His neobank is working to solve customers' problems more
holistically. Bell said, “It's significantly harder work and takes more time to become a bank, but having done that
we can have a much better relationship with our customers and we can offer them a lot more products and
services."
Think about that for a moment. Do you notice how better experiences, leads to better relationships, which
is then the stepping stone for more offerings? Many brands still jump straight to modified offerings, without
gaining that customer connection and the necessary foundation of trust first.

LEVELS OF VOCABULARY
Most languages have several levels of vocabulary that may be used by the same speakers. In English, at
least three have been identified and described.
Standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the
speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. As such, these words and expressions
are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries. Colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and
idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not
considered acceptable for more formal situations. Almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. Slang,
however, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as
appropriate formal usage by the majority. Colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard
dictionaries but will be so identified. Both colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than in writing.
Colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. Some slang also passes into standard speech, but
other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. In some cases, the majority never
accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories. Every generation seems
to require its own set of words to describe familiar objects and events.
It has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the
creation of a large body of slang expressions. First, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations
in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the
subgroups and the majority population. Finally, it is worth noting that the terms " standard," " colloquial," and
"slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study language. Only a tiny number of the speakers of any
language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expressions. Most speakers of English will, during
appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 39 to 43.
During times of crisis, people find themselves faced with lifestyle changes. One of the earliest and most
noticeable changes seen during the Covid-19 lockdown was how we consume media-and especially how we read.
People tend to find comfort in certain books, and reading habits and genre preferences can change during
periods of stress. This helps to explain why much genre fiction has roots in times of significant social, political or
economic upheaval. Gothic literature is, in part, a British Protestant response to the French Revolution.
Respondents generally reported that they were reading more than usual. This was largely due to having more
free time (due to being furloughed, or not having a commute or the usual social obligation or leisure activities).
This increased reading volume was complicated for those with caring responsibilities. Many people with children
reported that their reading time had increased generally because of their shared reading with children, but had
less time than normal for personal reading. Reading frequency was further complicated by a quality vs. quantity
snag. People spent more time reading and seeking escape, but an inability to concentrate meant they made less
progress than usual. In short, people spent more time reading but the volume they read was less.
Unsurprisingly, lockdown also made re-reading a physical necessity for some. Some respondents noted how
they were unable to visit the library or browse at the bookshop for new books. Others reported that they simply
wished to save money. On the other hand, the participants who reported re- reading less than normal during the
lockdown period wanted to use their newfound time to seek out new topics and genres.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 44 to 50.
The past fifty years or so have seen the gradual disappearing of animals from this earth, fishes from the
sea, trees and plants from the land.
Many factors result in this unpleasant phenomenon. Among them, hunting is the main factor that endangers
wildlife. Some people kill wildlife for sport. They take pleasure in collecting heads and hides. Yet others specialize in
commercial hunting like killing whales.
Apart from this, the rapidly growing human population threatens wildlife on land, too. Towns expand and
roads have to be built, so forests are burnt and trees are chopped down. It seems that man needs every inch of
land within his reach, so he moves on to the natural habitat of wildlife. Tigers, lions and leopards slowly die off
without the food and shelter that the forests provide.
In addition, rapid urbanization means industrial expansion. Very often, poisonous chemicals, industrial
wastes and oil are dumped into the rivers and seas. Fish and birds are threatened.
Man depends greatly on animals for survival. He needs their flesh, hides and furs. Thus, man cannot do
without wildlife; or he himself would become extinct. The public should be made aware that it would be better to
shoot the animals with a camera than with a gun. In this way, they can preserve and help wildlife to continue living
rather than to remove all signs of it.
Man must learn to farm the sea as he does the land. He should regulate the amount and the frequency of
his catch. He should allow fish to breed and multiply before netting them. Man also needs to build forest reserves,
and to pass laws prohibiting the killing of animals, especially those that are already
rare. To retain the present animal kingdom, the least that man can do is to clean the seas and rivers and to
prevent pollution.
The cycle of nature is such that it forms a vicious circle. The insecticides and pesticides that we spray on
crops can kill the birds and animals that feed on them. When man eats these poisoned animals, he himself can die.
We must therefore test the chemicals to be used before they are sprayed or it might mean the death of man!
