SUMMER TERM S.Y. 2019 - 2020

PROBLEM SET # 1

General Instructions:
1. Read each part carefully and supply what is needed.
2. Submit a scanned copy of your answers in .pdf or in .jpg/.png/.jpeg format in our Edmodo
classroom platform. Answers should be hand-written.
3. Follow this format in stating the filename: Surname, PS#1
4. Deadline of submission would be tomorrow, 6 June 2020 between 8:00am to 9:00am only.
5. I expect that you would exercise integrity and honesty in your work as this would be the
honorable action of a well-disciplined student.

II. Gases: read each problem carefully, then propose a neat, organized and accurate solution
for it. Observe proper presentation of correct significant figures. Enclose your final
answers in a box.

1. A balloon is filled to a volume of 7.00 × 10@ 𝑚𝐿 at a temperature of 20.0°C. The balloon is then
cooled at constant pressure to a temperature of 1.00 × 10@ 𝐾. What is the final volume of the
balloon?

2. Complete the following table for an ideal gas.

3. A series of measurements are made to determine the molar mass of an unknown gas. First, a
large flask is evacuated and found to weigh 134.567 𝑔. It is then filled with the gas to a
pressure of 735 𝑡𝑜𝑟𝑟 at 31°𝐶 and reweighed. Its mass is now 137.456 𝑔. Finally, the flask is
filled with water at 31°𝐶 and found to weigh 1067.9 g. (The density of the water at this
temperature is 0.997 𝑔/𝑚𝐿.) Assume that the ideal-gas equation applies, and calculate the
molar mass of the unknown gas.
