I. To fully understand Rizal’s childhood and early education events, read chapters 1-8 of
Memoirs of the Student in Manila written by P. Jacinto (Rizal). Afterward, make a
timeline of Rizal’s life based on the reading (20pts).
Rizal was born in Calamba, Wednesday, a few days before full moon.

Rizal was four years old when he lost his sister Concha in which his first time to
shed tears.

Rizal discovered Biñan; his father’s birthplace in which he was sent to continue
studying Latin.
Rizal and his classmate were the “fashionable painters” of the class.

Father Minister of Ateneo Municipal refused to admit Rizal because he was late to
admission or because of his weak constitution and short stature.
Rizal was admitted due to the request of Father Burgos’ nephew, Manuel Jerez.
Rizal did not want to study hard because of the disgusted words uttered by his
professors, and he obtained only accessit.

Rizal carried away five medals at the end of the term and was given the degree of
Bachelor of Arts.

He met engaged Segunda Katigbak, sister of his friend from Batangas, Mariano
Katigbak.
He fell in love with Segunda Katigbak that he made a pencil portrait of her.
He met a bachelor girl older than him, with fair skin, seductive and attractive eyes.

March - Rizal took the examination in Metaphysics and obtained the grade of
excellent.
He had the same success in topography, winning two medals and in agriculture.

His mother read to him the fable of the young and the old moths and the fable
revealed things unknown to Rizal until then.

We all know Rizal as the Philippines’ National hero, given that he was a naturally
smart kid, his childhood, family, and education was a big part that shaped him into what
he was a person. Rizal was raised by a religious family, specifically his mother, Teodora
Alonzo. She taught Rizal how to read and write, read him poems that made Rizal realize a
lot of things. He had a strong influence of religion in him that made him opened his mind
to injustice and freedom. As a boy, he carried lots of awards that proves that he is an
extraordinary boy in his age, and those around him knew of this. Having such education,
and the influence of those around him, he was able to work on such remarkable novels and
works that influence people of his time and still applicable to the people of the present. He
became known for his principles and ideas. Also, as a boy, he experienced different
emotions new to him, such as love as well as heartbreaks and discontentment, also the one
about friendships. He had a glimpse of how humans are, in relation to injustice,
discrimination, maltreatment and trust. Since then, he focused on his works and goal, which
is to give people something to believe into, that they will achieve freedom in the right time.
At the last chapter, Rizal’s first reminiscence, the fable about the moth, he saw himself as
the moth, despite hearing warnings and advice, he saw light which in his version, the
Filipinos, the Philippines and freedom, as the most beautiful thing, that it is worthy for a
man to sacrifice his life to it.
