WHAT IS COMPUTERISED EMBROIDERY?

Computerized embroidery, also called Computer-controlled embroidery or simply machine

embroidery is a kind of Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM).

Computerized embroidery machines are specialized machines that can create embroidery
from computerized designs. Such machines exist for the home market, for the small
independent professional and for mass production. Many home sewing machines can be
turned into an embroidery machine by adding a hardware module. Embroidery
machines can be found in fab labs and other maker spaces.
Embroidery design software exists in various form, either as special-purpose tools for
various design stages or as complete design suites. Embroidery designs can be stored in
a multitude of proprietary design formats, that can be exported to proprietary machine
formats (now often sold over the Internet). Free "open source" designs files are difficult to
find. Converter software between various machine formats exists. Most design formats
cannot be translated.
Computerized embroidery is when the embroidery is done using computerized designs. It is
also popularly known as machine embroidery or computer-controlled embroidery.

Computer created design is then used to stitch the design on the fabric or material.

These embroidery machines are specifically designed to translate the drawings or designs
made by the computer into beautiful decorative stitches on the fabric.

HISTORY

It can be argued that computer-controlled embroidery machines are older than computers.
In the beginning of the 19th century, Jacquard invented looms controlled by a "chain of
cards". However, embroidery machines controlled in real-time by a "puncher"
through pantographs dominated the market in the 19th century and lasted until the 1970's.
Models made between the two WWs used punched tapes for control, i.e. software driven
embroidery machines became important.

ESSENTIALS REQUIRED TO DO COMPUTERIZED EMBROIDERY

Stock up the following things to get started on your computerized embroidery

1. Firstly, you will need the sewing machine that can-do embellishment from the file
formats. Most modern computerized embroidery machines have the pre-designed patterns
embedded in them.

You could also add more designs by way of downloading them to USB, which can then be
used with these specialized sewing machines.

1
2. A variety of embroidery threads to be used for the decorative stitches.

3. Pair of sharp scissors and other sewing supplies (which is inevitable in sewing projects)

4. Good quality fabric to create decorative patterns.

BENEFITS OF COMPUTERIZED EMBROIDERY

Computerized embroidery machines can be used to sew some very complicated designs
which involve a lot of time and labor.

Easy to operate and understand

You can easily sew designs of your choice using computerized embroidery. Using these
machines does not require a lot of professional knowledge and expertise.

If you are good with your sewing machine, you could also work on a computerized
embroidery machine. The only thing is that you should have a basic knowledge of its
working.

Using the manual is a great way to learn how to use your embroidery machine to give you
stunning designs on any fabric of your choice.

Accuracy
Machine made designs are usually high on accuracy as it has all the parameters well defined
before the machine starts to translate the designs into stitches on the material.

All that it requires is a lot of supervision to ensure the design is getting stitched as per the
design file.

Speed
Hand-made embroidery is sure expensive. However, it requires a lot of human labor, and
the reason for the high price is justified. Machine-made embroidery is faster and more
efficient.

Patterns can be converted into digital formats, which in turn can be sewn onto fabrics. It
saves a lot of time and is ideal for large scale production.

A computerized machine can help complete designs in a few minutes, which otherwise
would take more than a week by hand.

Flexible
You can use the pre-designed templates and make precise adjustments to it. Thus, it allows
for editing of the designs before using them on materials.

2
CRITERIA FOR SELECTING AN EMBROIDERY MACHINE

 Overall mechanical quality, in particular reliability and precision.

 Hoop-size (frames for the embroidery area) is critical. 14x20 cm is expected for a
mid-level machine and many folks consider this not enough. Newer models, as of
2020, support larger hoops. However, extra-large hoops exist only on high-end
consumer machines as well as industrial multi-needle models. There also exist a
third-party market for hoops. On some smaller machines, large hoops are
difficult to use since designs must be split so that the hoop can be turned
around. Finally, one also needs a tiny hoop (free arm hoop) for embroidering on
tight places. Rotary hoops available for semi-professional and industrial
machines allow embroidery on caps.
 Free arm (or at least an add-on). This allows stitching on sleeves, socks and other
narrower items.
 Stitches / minute (SPM). Should be at least 500. Typical range is between 400
and 1000, e.g. a Elna 8300 can do 750/minute a high-end consumer model like
the Brother PRX1000 can do 1000/minute.
 Built-in fonts, patterns and designs may make a difference to people who prefer
designing on the machine (as opposed to using a software on PC).
 Needle threader (helps putting the thread into the needle or does it without
assistance)
 Thread cutter (cut bottom and top thread)
 Support for standard USB flash drives (keys) and direct PC link
 User interface quality and functionalities. It should allow for simple editing like
translation, rotation, resizing, time/stitch counting, design tracing of a design.
 Free (or cheap) software, e.g. for visualizing embroidery files
 Slide speed control
 Automatic detection of fabric and thread tension regulation (maybe)
 Sensors that will tell you if something went wrong, in particular broken threads.
 Local dealer support
 Number of needles if you can afford it. Most embroideries need about six colors,
therefore we consider a six-needle machine a minimally useful multi-needle
machine. But if you don't want to change threads all the time, a 16-needle
machine would be more comfortable. Price for an extra needle is about 1K.

3
HOW TO USE A COMPUTERIZED EMBROIDERY

Step 1. Create a design or edit the existing designs

This requires you to put to the test your creativity. Digitizing will require you to create your
designs, which can be time-consuming.

However, the artist in you will feel satiated if you can create something unique on your own.
You could also use the pre-designed patterns that come when you purchase the embroidery
software.

You could also explore several designs that are available on the internet by downloading
them on to a USB device, which can be further used with your embroidery machine to give
you beautiful, intricate designs.

Also, keep in mind the capacity of your machine, as to how many needles you can use, how
many colors it can accommodate, and so on.

Otherwise, your design might look quite distant from what you had in mind.

Step 2. Save and transfer the file into the machine

Once you are done with the designing or editing part, save the file in a format that is
compatible with the software. The format should also be one that can be read by your
machine.

It is essential to save the file in the format that is compatible with your software and
machine so that any future editing can be done with ease.

You could either use a USB cable to transfer the design or use a USB device to allow your
machine to read the design in a digital format.

Step 3. Start the stitching process

Before the machine gets started with the embroidery function, you will have to make a few
manual inputs. The program assigns specific numbersfor each of the different colors and the
stitching order as well.

Your embroidery machine will also have numbers on the needles for a particular color. You
will have to fill out these details so the machine knows which color thread has to be chosen
at different stages of the embroidery.

4
Step 4. Frame the fabric using the hoop in the machine
This will help the fabric to be in place while the machine is sewing the designs on it. Framing
also ensures the fabric stays firm enough for the needles to move around while making the
stitches with accuracy.

Embroidery designs are created as a loop by using the bobbin and top thread like in ordinary
sewing.

Step 5. Get the embroidery machine started

Wait for the machines to complete a specific specified field of stitching to ensure the
looping is happening correctly.

Once you have input the needle numbers for the different colors and order of stitching, you
will also input a specific field for which you will run the stitches.

The machine will run until it completes the specified field and not venture out of the
parameters mentioned.

Step 6. Monitor the progress

As an operator, you are required to monitor the functions of your embroidery machine
continuously.

Machines that have a single needle requires special care as they end the stitching process
once they are done stitching a particular color.

Once it is done with one color, the operator will have to change the color. It is ideal to have
a machine with many needles if you are frequently working with designs that require many
colors.

COMPUTERIZED MACHINE EMBROIDERY

• Most modern embroidery machines are computer controlled and specifically engineered
for embroidery.

• Industrial and commercial embroidery machines and combination sewing -embroidery

machines have a hooping or framing system that holds the framed area of fabric taut under
the sewing needle and moves it automatically to create a design from a pre-programmed
digital embroidery pattern.

• Depending on its capabilities, the machine will require varying degrees of user input to
read and sew embroidery designs.

5
SINGLE HEAD EMBROIDERY MACHINE

Single-head Embroidery machine are similar to basic lockstitch sewing machines.

• They are developed for producing small orders and are used for customizing garments.
• Single –head machine are most often used for custom work and monogramming. • They
may be manually operated or computer controlled.
• Manually operated machine depend on skilled operators to position and manipulate
material under the needle.

• Computerized Embroidery machines are designed to stitch the selected design and all the
operator must do is place the garment.
SINGLE HEAD EMBROIDERY MACHINE

• Technology has expanded the use of single head Embroidery machine.

• A computer network can interface and control multiple singlehead machines so that each
machine can run completely different embroidery program at the same time.

• This allows manufacturer to customize their services and produce very small order as
needed by their customer .

6
• For example, to stitch a small order of three on a large multihead machine wastes capacity
that could better be used for large orders.
Advantages

• The largest market for single-head machines is short-run corporate identity (golf and polo
shirts, caps and other corporate clothing).
• Some mid-size uniform customers, such as hospitals and restaurant chains, try to add
their own embroidery equipment in-house. For the most part, the store whose primary
customers are individuals and groups, customization requests are often farmed out.

• By adding tools such as the SWF-1501C Compact Automatic Embroidery Machine, or the
Advance 1501C Professional Machine at a better price and warranty, you can have the
freedom to provide individual units for samples, even small production runs.
• Mixing digital direct-to-garment printing (DTG) with embroidery, spangles and rhinestones
is a fast growing fashion trend. A variety of different decoration styles can set your shop
apart from the crowd.
• Another advantage is price, Startup costs are significantly lower with the single-head over
multi-headed machines, making it an affordable way to expand your product line.
Disadvantage
• Space is also an issue. A compact needle machine accommodates up to 100 designs and
has a top speed of 1,200 stitches per minute but takes up only 2.5’x2.5′ of space.

• It is not suitable for large orders and evergreen classic designs

MULTI HEAD EMBROIDERY MACHINE

7
Multi-head embroidery machine is similar to single-head embroidery machine except they
contain two or more heads that stitch the same pattern simultaneously.
• Smaller areas are best Embroidered with more close-set heads ,larger patterns require
wider needle range and fewer heads.
• Border machine provides the more flexibility , because closesets hand can be space closed
together and alternate heads can be coupled to allow stitching of a wider pattern.

• With multi-head machines, garments are individually hoped and inserted horizontally
under each head.

• Each head utilizes 1 to 6 needles and up to 6 colors in stitching a design.

• Machine are purchase with specific number of heads.

• The optimal number of heads is generally dependant on the firm’s average order size,
average number of stitches per design, and size of the area to be stitched.

• Higher stitch count are more efficiently produced on machines with more heads.

• Loading time , which entails inserting the fabric or garment component under the machine
head, should be less then stitching time if the operation is to be productive.
• More heads requires more loading time ,and for design with a lower stitch count , there is
more ideal time during the loading process.

Advantages
• If you find that your order is for larger designs that take longer time to sew, a larger
system will be better.

• An extended run time is balanced out by the increased setup time, so more heads will be
better.

• A two-head machine could be a perfect fit for your business.

• You can save time on elaborate embroidery involving high stitch counts by putting them
on an Advancé 4 Head Professional Embroidery Machine as opposed to a singlehead
machine, or possibly even a 6 head machine.
Disadvantages
• It is not suitable for small orders due to high productivity compare to the single head
machine.
• Machine is very expensive so not recommended for a small scale company having less
orders

SCHIFFLI EMBROIDERY
Schiffli Embroidery machine are large , loomlike machines used to stitch designs on length of
piece goods.

8
• They are used to embroider piece goods ,produce emblems , and make novelty and venise
lace trims.
• Most machine operates with two frames that hold two fabric length of 10,15 and 21 yards
that span the frames which are mounted vertically , have controlled vertical and horizontal
movement directed by punched tape or a computer disk.

• Action of some types of schiffli machines are controlled by an automat , which is a system
of rods ,cams ,and levers used to read punched tapes and direct Embroidery frames in
forming a design.

• Needle are mounted on two horizontal fixed tracks that span the length of the frames.

• Needle bar moves needle horizontally in and out of piece in goods in synchronization with
frame movement
• Needles are pushed into frame piece goods and retracted for stitch formation.

• A stitched Pattern evolves from frame movement.

• Borers, which puncture fabric and push aside yarns prior to stiching are mounted directly
below the needle bars to make eyelet fabrics and trims.

• Schiffli Embroidered fabric may experience a reduction in yardage because of the heavy
concentration of stitches.

• Because of complexity, size and cost of schiffli equipment and the specialized training and
expertise required to operate it, most apparel firm use contractor that specialise in schiffli
work.

• Fabrics can be sent to contractors to embroider, or Embroider trims can be special

ordered.
EMBROIDERY MACHINE CLASSIFICATION

 Single needle embroidery machines

 Sewing machines with an embroidery module or combined sewing/embroidery
machines
 Multi-needle semi-professional embroidery machines (between 4 and 10
needles)
 Multi-needle professional embroidery machines (between 9 and 16 needles)

9
Entry and mid-level pure embroidery machines

Janome MC350 embroidery machine

Mid-level machines work fine, but you have to change threads a lot and finishing (e.g.
removing jump stitches) requires more work. Also, precision will not be the same. Entry-
level machines usually have smaller stitching areas, smaller and simpler interfaces, and
probably not as good mechanics.
A typical example (as of spring 2011) of a lower mid-level embroidery-only machine is the
Brother Innov-is NV 750E. It costs about CHF 1500 or € 1100 (only about $800 in the US) and
has a 18x13cm embroidery area (hoop). At the time of writing this model may probably
offer the best feature for money ratio.
Another popular example is the Elna 8300 and it comes with a standard 12.6x11cm hoop
and a larger hoop of 20x14 cm. The Janome MC 350 E is almost identical. Both cost between
€ 1400 and 1600, i.e. about US $2000. We paid our Elna, CHF 2300 in a Geneva shop and we
didn't get any educational rebate. With respect to most other machines, it has the
advantage of a relatively small arm, i.e. one can embroider leaves.
There are also cheaper models, however you may not find these in some countries. Low-end
machines are often not sold in sewing shops, but in supermarkets and other mass let-outs.
Good models seem to be the Brother Innov-is 90E (about € 600), the Brother PE-770 (at
$670 on sale) or the Janome MC200E ($900). Even cheaper would be a Brother
SE400 sewing/embroidery machine ($400). If you are low on budget, look out for special
deals for end of series models.

Most higher mid-level embroidery machines are also sewing machine (see next item). It
seems that they don't offer better precision, but are more expensive because of the sewing
functionality.

10
Lower and higher Mid-level sewing/embroidery machines
The choice for mid-level combi machines is enormous. There are differences in features
and large differences in prices. I wonder, whether the difference in price doesn't reflect
better mechanics but rather the better built-in LCD panel and software. Someone like me
would not necessarily need that kind of on-board control, since we feel comfortable doing
everything with a computer.
For example, a Brother sewing/embroidery Innov-is 1500 with a 26x16cm hoop and a large
LCD cost about 2.499,00 €. The Bernina Aurora 450 sewing machine plus embroidery
module costs about CHF 3500. The (oval) hoop size is 25.5x14.5cm and the model has a
smaller LCD, but probably better mechanics. A Husqvarna Topaz 20 includes a large hoop of
36x20cm and costs about € 1800 and the Topaz 30 is about € 2200.
A higher mid-level machine would have a larger color screen, more stitches, more built-in
software (both functionalities and designs). E.g. a Brother Innov-is 4000 or a Bernina Artista
640 with embroidery module would cost about CHF 6000.
High end sewing / embroidery machines
A high end-end sewing/embroidery machine like the Bernina 830 or the Brother Quattro
(same as Innovis I in Europe?) are in the CHF 8-10000 price range, e.g. similar as entry-level
multi-needle embroidery machines. Some brand's high-end machines are a bit cheaper. e.g.
the Elna 9600 "Haute Couture" and the practically identical Janome 11000 are about € 5000.
According to one sales person we interviewed, high end machines are not necessarily better
in terms of precision than mid-end machines. They just add extra functionality.
These machines feature a very large screen and advanced on-screen editing. Mechanics
might be better, but we don't know. The problem that one has to change threads remains.
These are probably dream machines for combined sewing/embroidery, but not necessarily
for just embroidery. Read on if you plan to get a dream machine.

Multi-needle embroidery machines

Established prosumer brands introduced A true entry-level embroidery machine (i.e. a
device that has four to six needles) costs around 9-12 K CHF. Street prices seem differ in
different countries. the Brother PR-650 did cost Euros 7700 on amazon.de / CHF 11'000 in a

11
Swiss shop / $7500 in the US. A Babylock professional Plus is about $ 10000 in the USA. A
Korean SWF/MA-6 is also about $11000.

 A 4-needle Elna 9900 is about € 6500.- and the almost identical 4-needle Janome
MB-4 about € 5500 to 6000 or US$ 7000.

 A ten needle Brother PR1050X costs about $ 9500.- in the USA, much more in
Europe. In that price range, that probably remains the high-end prosumer
machine to buy as of June 2017. In Switzerland list price is 12'000CH, some sell it
for less, i.e 10'000. For education, prices still can be lower.

 The Babylock Valiant BMV10 looks similar to the Brother PR-100x models.

 A Tajima SAI 8-needle machine cost around € 8500.- + value added tax, in
Europe. Tajima is the leading industrial machine manufacturer.
New, cheap prosumer machines

 Fuwei models cost much less, e.g. a 15 needle Machine that looks like a Brother
PR is only 7500 Euros (in France)

Melco Amaya Lite industrial embroidery machine

Industrial multi-needle embroidery machines
You then could look at simple industrial machines. These are faster, may have more needles
and are of course more expensive. An entry level Tajima Neo II is about 14000$ in the US.
Prices for that type of machine seem to differ a lot from shop to shop and from country to
country.
Other machines like the Melco EMT16 can do 1500 Stitches/minute and stitch on most
materials. It has less builtin editing i.e. design is entirely done with a computer. Maybe the
simpler design makes these a bit more robust than the Brother PR 1050X who has more
electronic bells and whistles, but I really do not know. This model has other advantages, e.g.
the smallest arm, being able to print on 270 degrees, (optionally) more than one print head,
etc. It also can be used in an industrial setting, e.g. several machines can run jobs from one

12
PC. The 16 needle Bernina E-16 (is made by MELCO) and may cost the same as the
equivalent MELCO Amaya EMT16 at around 17000 Euros.
There are many other brands, e.g. ZSK (German), Ricoma, Barudan, ....
Cheap multi-needle machines
In recent years, several Chinese manufacturers started offering 10 to 16 needle designs for
attractive prices. We have no idea how well they are built and how long they last without
revision. Therefore we recommend buying from a local reseller, unless you understand how
to repair relatively complex machinery. Some of these brands seem to include semi-
professional (i.e. smaller and easier to use) models, e.g. Lewanjoy seems to sell Brother PR
clones (but the picture is maybe a mistake).
A Fuwei 15 needle industrial machine is sold for about 8000 Euros in France. Maison
Broderie (also in France) sells a rebranded BAI 12 needle model for about 5500 Euros.
If you directly order from China, you have to include shipping costs (1000 to 2500 Euros)
plus value added tax (which is high in most EU countries) plus custom fees. There are several
brands that sell 12 to 16 needle machines in the 3-4K range,
e.g. Holiauma, Lewanjoy, Baima (home)

PROCEDURE AND WORKING INSTRUCTION OF EMBROIDERY SECTION IN CLOTHING OR

GARMENT SECTOR

Embroidery Section in Apparel Industry:

The embroidery section is one of the most important sections of the apparel
manufacturing industry. It is one of the special tasks which is done according to
the buyer’s requirements. In the past embroidery had done by using the manual method. But
now a day, it is done by applying a computerized method. In the readymade apparel sector,
computerized embroidery machine helps to produce very complex design within a very short
period of time.

13
Process of Embroidery in Apparel Manufacturing Industry:
All the processes of embroidery have presented below:
1. Embroidery is a decorative stitch that is placed on the garment to enhance its
properties or advertise the brand of the garment.
2. Some styles need the pocket, front, or sleeve to be embroidered. It is the
embroidery section supervisor’s responsibility to get the correct embroidery disk
or tape from the production coordinator.
3. This tape is placed on the machine and the machine is set up to run 20
embroideries at once based on machine capacity.
4. The supervisor will adjust the machine speed so that it is suitable for the different
fabric and embroidery types.
5. The approved standard will be hanging with the machine and follow according to
style.
6. When the embroidery operation is completed in the embroidery section then all
the pieces are checked 100% through the needle detector machine and send to
the cutting section.
7. Finally cutting section will include all the parts together and deliver to the sewing
line.
8. The cutting quality inspector must check each cut received from embroidery
100% for its quality and quantity.
9. Cutting in-charge has to follow the bundled chart and ensure the entire cut
received is as per its Quantity and number sequence.
10. Any panel is to be returned in the embroidery section for rectifying should be
noted down in this report and should ensure that each panel will be returned to
each bundle after correction or replacement.
11. Q.A (Quality assurance) Manager and Cutting in-charge must ensure each bundle
which is going to be issued to the sewing line will be 100% correct and acceptable
with quantity too.
12. Full responsibility delegated to the embroidery section or plant about standard
quality and each panel must be check for quality point advised by the QC (Quality
Controller) and its Quality Manager. QC has to submit this report to the QA
Manager on daily basis.
13. Before sewing line input, Q. I (Quality in-charge) will check each bundle which is
going to be passed through the metal detector machine, also will be 100% correct
and acceptable with quantity.

Embroidery QC Check:
After adjusting the machine in the embroidery section, the supervisor will check some
samples to ensure that the machine is set up correctly. The embroidery operator will get the
Q.C’s approval before the bulk production. The Q.C inspector will inspect the pieces in a
bundle randomly. If they find one or more defects out of the pieces they inspect then the
entire bundle will be rejected. If they find no defects in the bundle then the bundle will be
released for the next process. Then inspection procedure is the same as the in-line Q.C
system.

14
PURPOSE OF EMBROIDERY QC CHECK:

To ensure that the embroidery production is going to be acceptable to proceed with metal-
free cut parts to the sewing line to minimize and control garment quantity and minimize
garment rejection due to embroidery mistakes.
Outcome:
 The entire cut which is going to be produced will be without embroidery
mistakes.
 Minimize garments rejection due to embroidery defects.
 This metal detection procedure will ensure product safety, legality, and quality .

EMROIDERY PROBLEMS : BACKING
• Backing has the job of enabling sharp-contoured embroidery free from deformation due
to pulling

• It gives the embroidery base the necessary dimensional stability in conjunction with the
underlay stitching
• It may be removed after the embroidery process by tearing, cutting away or dissolving

• For materials with a nap, the backing can be supported by a soluble film on the top of the
embroidered item. The stitches are prevented from sinking into the nap by a water- or
heatsoluble backing or a suitable film Types of Backing Material Backing Fine knitwear, very
fine woven fabrics Cut away backing, in order to avoid material damages while tearing away
the backing Woven fabric, stable knitwear Tear away backing Transparent materials,
embroideries which are visible as well from the reverse side Water- or heat soluble backing
for the purpose of complete removal Terry cloth, velvet, velours Tear or cut away backing +
water-soluble film on the top

The following table is given as a guide for the application of different types of backing:

COMMON REASONS FOR SEWING & EMBROIDERY MACHINES TO MALFUNCTION

• Needle Breaks

• Loops on top or bottom of fabric during sewing

• Upper thread breaks

EMBROIDERY TECHNOLOGY THEN AND NOW

Evolution of embroidery technology needed a seed to start. Machine embroidery began in

the middle of the 19th century with the invention of the hand embroidery machine. The
operator was required to move the fabric above and below the needle with a hand crank
and guided the needles along a pattern. Despite the effort it took to work the machine, it
was an efficient innovation, doing the labor of four hand embroiderers. Just after the turn of
the century, in 1911, the first multi-head embroidery machine was invented, allowing users
to produce multiple pieces of work at once.

It wasn’t until the 1950’s that embroidery machines became common and it was 30 more
years before computer-controlled machines were invented. In the 1980’s, the earliest
versions of the modern computerized embroidery machine were developed.

Wilcom and Melco were two of the pioneers in the field. Wilcom introduced the first graphic
design system for embroidery that could be run on a microcomputer, and Melco produced
the first embroidery sample head and the first digitizing system for embroidery machines.

Since the 1990’s, computerized machine embroidery has become widely popular for both
commercial and personal use. Now, new technology is making the process even more
efficient and profitable. Modern innovators are looking at new ways to increase the
efficiency, ease of use, and versatility of computer-controlled embroidery machines. Some
of the latest developments include higher speeds, more needles per head, more
attachments per head, and more precise cutting with laser technology, to name a few.

Evolution of Embroidery Technology – Recent Hardware Innovations

Melco Industries, Inc. recently released the EMT16 Plus, which introduces a significant
upgrade to their previous model. The new machine offers the advantage of embroidery
heads that can be stopped or started independently. Traditional multi-head machines
require all heads to shut down if one needs a bobbin changed, for example. The new model
increases machine productivity by 50%. Another factor that contributes to the machine’s
efficiency is the Acti-Feed thread control system, a monitoring system that adjusts the feed
and tension automatically.

Another recent innovation was introduced by Coloreel. Their Embroline thread coloring
attachment applies color instantly to threads during the embroidery process. This method
opens up a world of possibilities in terms of color design and effects. In addition, it allows
an embroidery machine to use a single reel of thread per embroidery head, eliminating the
necessity of maintaining a large stock of threads and taking time to rethread the machine

25
frequently. With a minimum of thread cuts and lock stitches, the quality of the embroidery
increases with this new technology.

While technology has revolutionized the embroidery business, there has also been a
renewed demand for hand-design techniques, such as bead work and sequins. To answer
this demand, Barudan has introduced a 4-in-1 machine that does sequin embroidery along
with coiling, chain-stitching, and cording. The company has also released a sequin
attachment for round embroidery heads that allows any needle on the rotary head to attach
a sequin.

Another advance in embroidery technology decreases time spent on maintenance.

Lubrication is a time-consuming task, but newer machines are replacing gears with sealed
bearings and belts that don’t need to be oiled. In addition, many newer machines are
quieter, more durable, and have more options for accessories and attachments.

Embroidery Shop Management Automation

More recently, evolution of embroidery technology moved from hardware to software.

Onsite business management software is a software package designed specifically for the
embroidery industry. It has features that are especially geared toward embroiderers, such
as design and production variables. With Onsite, embroiderers can manage all aspects of
their shop with a single business software solution designed for their business. The proofing
software also allows customer to approve a piece of artwork online. The software includes a
price calculator that can base prices on stitch count or number of colors. Another benefit is
the size matrix that lets the owner enter multiple sizes for a single item. These features are
of great benefit to businesses that sell embroidered products.
