1.0 PURPOSE
To define the technical requirements of Excavation and Backfilling.

2.0 SCOPE
This Project Work Instruction covers the clearing, rough grading and excavation for
foundations and underground structures. In addition, backfilling and compacting
activities are covered.

6.1 QA/QC Manager

QA/QC Manager is responsible for the maintenance of this work instruction.

6.2 Civil Supervisor

Civil Supervisor and Civil QC Inspector shall be responsible for the implementation of
this work instruction

Civil QC Inspector is responsible for making necessary inspections.

7.0 INSTRUCTION

7.1 Inspection Guidelines

7.1.1 Clearing and Rough Grading

 Develop a grading schedule to prevent damage to existing site.
 Inspect grading area for soft spots, rocks, buried rubbish, etc.
 Locate and get approval for spoils area for unsuitable soils and rocks.
 Check survey for errors.
 Inspect clear area soil conditions for organic matter, unstable soils, expansive
clay materials, etc.
 Take periodic soil samples for analysis.
 Test and inspect compaction to meet contract requirements.

7.1.2 Excavation for Foundations and Structures

 Develop an excavation schedule to prevent damage to existing site and other
excavations.
 Check survey for errors.
 Inspect excavation for correct dimensions and soundness of soil.
 When required, inspect bottom of excavation for soil compaction and load
bearing capacity.
 Inspect excavation for buried rubbish, rocks, or organic materials.
 Inspect excavations for proper sloping, benching, or shoring to meet the
requirements of site safety procedures.
 Inspect soil for any deleterious substances (especially on sites adjacent to
existing works such as petrochemical plants).

7.1.3 Backfilling and Compaction

 Prior to backfill, inspect suitability of backfill material in accordance with design
documents. Maintain a continual check on backfill suitability.
 Ensure borrow pits have sufficient capacity to meet project requirements.
 Develop a backfill plan to prevent damage to new and existing foundations and
other excavations.
 Inspect excavations prior to backfill, for rubbish, old formwork, stones, etc.

  Inspect backfill activities to ensure proper compaction and proper placement.
 Inspect compaction procedures and methods to ensure they meet design
document requirements.
 Inspect for over compaction and damage to any foundations.
