Impact of Facebook Addiction on

Academic Performance of Chittagong University Students

1. Introduction
Many social networking sites (SNS) have attracted billions of members globally, including
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, among others. SNS are gradually becoming an integral part of
consumers' daily life (Sabir et al., 2013). Nielsen (2011) found that Facebook is the most widely
used and popular social networking site among students in his poll. In the academic realm, social
media is considered a distraction that causes students to procrastinate in their academic tasks. Some
students, on the other hand, report that using social networking sites during class time helps them
deal with boredom in university. This research will look into the effects of Facebook on Chittagong
University students and how it might be handled in connection to their studies.

2. Literature review
2.1: Social Networking sites:
SNSs (social networking sites) are online communication tools that allow users to interact with
others in their social networks (Boyd & Ellison, 2008). Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Cyworld,
and Twitter are just a few of the social networking sites that allow users to communicate in a
variety of ways, including text, voice, and video. Facebook is the most popular and dominant social
media network among them. Social networking sites are online communities of people who share
common interests and/or activities, or who are interested in learning more about the interests and
activities of others.
2.2: Facebook: According to (Thuseethan, S., and Kuhanesan, S, 2014), Facebook is the most
popular social media platform among young teenagers and students. According to Statistics
(January 2018), Facebook has 2.2 billion monthly active users, with 76 percent of young adults
and teenagers (ages 12 to 24) using it on a daily basis.
2.3: Academic Performance: Academic achievement is evaluated first and foremost, as it should
be for any academic institution. According to the research, academic institutions are associated
with the purpose of educating individuals with skills and knowledge, but academic performance
is the result of education in which teachers, students, and organizations all fulfill their goals at the
same time. Darling (2005) and Galiher (2006) are two examples of this.
2.4: Facebook Usage and Academic Performance: The majority of people use Facebook for
friendship purposes, according to Ahsanul Haq, A., and Chand, S. (2012). Most students only
utilize it to meet new people and keep in touch with old ones. According to Lau, W. W. (2017),
Facebook has a detrimental impact on social and non-academic aspects of student’s lives, such as
a lack of experience and knowledge of practical matters, which has a detrimental impact on their
classroom performance. A relationship between social media use and academic achievement was
identified by S. Thuseethan and S. Kuhanesan (2014). When compared to rare Facebook users, the
majority of regular and frequent users obtained low marks. According to Kabre, F., and Brown, U.
J. (2011), individuals who used Facebook one or more times throughout the study period had
poorer grade point averages, validating previous research on the effects of social media on
academic achievement.
Research Gap: There is no study to support the claim that Facebook, as a social networking site,
could be utilized to improve Chittagong University students' academic performance. This review
aims to address this void by providing Chittagong University students with useful information
about Facebook usage that will help them achieve greater academic success.

3. Research objectives
Our goal of this study is to observe how Facebook affects Chittagong University students'
academic performance and whether it can be used to help them improve their grades.

4. Research questions
We will conduct this study on the basis of the following two questions:
1. How does the usage of Facebook affect the academic performance of university students?
2. Can Facebook be used to enhance their academic performance?

5. Significance of the study

Facebook addiction is a burning issue for today’s world. Most of the users use Facebook without
really thinking about what they are doing. While “Facebook addiction” isn’t formally recognized
in the field of Education and Statistical Manual of failing the academic results, researchers suggest
that it’s a growing concern, particularly among the youth.
That’s why, we tried to reveal the bitter truth of this technology and make their guardian vigilant
regarding their children.

6. Methodology
This study was carried out using a quantitative research method. The online survey technique was
employed in this study as part of the quantitative approach.
6.1: Sampling Technique: Stratified random sampling technique was used for choosing samples
of the study. Samples under the study include running students from various departments of
Chittagong University including graduation stage or post-graduation stage. Students from three
faculties of Chittagong University i.e. Science Faculty, Arts Faculty and BBA faculty were chosen
in this study. To ensure equal representation of both male and female quota sampling was taken
into account. Male respondents constitute 51% and female respondents constitute 49%.
6.2: Data Collection Method: Under this study, survey questionnaire was followed to collect data
from respondents. The questionnaire contained structured and mixed ended questions. Mixed
ended questions were asked to get diverse viewpoints of respondents on specific issues. Likert
Scale was followed also. Five standards in Likert Scale include- agree, strongly agree, neutral,
disagree and strongly disagree.

7. Time table and budget

Time Table: Literally, it might take 3 months approximately in order to complete this study.
Budget:
