Answer all the questions. Each question is of 10 marks.

1. A. i) State maximum power transfer theorem and find out at what condition maximum
power will transfer through an electric network?
ii)Find the current through 5Ω resistors in the fig. given below when the terminal
across a 10Ω is open circuited. Give the necessary circuit diagrams.

B. i) An alternating sinusoidal varying voltage with angular frequency of 314 rad/sec.
has an average value of 127.4V. Find the instantaneous value of the emf at 1/300
sec after passing through a positive maximum value.
ii) What do you mean by 3 phase system? What are the advantages of three phase
power system as compared to single phase power system? 5+5

2. A. i) What do you mean by Peak Factor and Form Factor? Also find the values of
them.
ii) An alternating emf of frequency 50Hz, has an amplitude of 100V. Write down
the equation for the instantaneous value. Also find the instantaneous value of
the emf after 1/600 second. 5+5

B. i) What is the utility of Superposition theorem?
ii) Find the currents in the different branches of the network shown in the figure
using nodal analysis. 5+5

3. A. Briefly discuss the principle of operation of a single phase transformer. A 200kVA
single phase transformer has 1000 turns in the primary and 600 turns on the
secondary. The primary winding is supplied from a 440V, 50Hz source. Find the
secondary voltage at no load.

B. i) Differentiate between Linear Elements and Non Linear elements.
ii) Find the power loss in 10Ω using Thevenin’s theorem. 5+5

4. A. i) A 400V, 4-pole, 50 Hz, 3-phase, 10 hp, star connected induction motor has a no
load slip of 1% and full load slip of 4%. Find the following:
a) Syn. speed
b) no-load speed
c) full-load speed.
ii) Compare the induction motor with a transformer. 5+5

B. What is Back emf in a DC motor?
An 8 pole DC generator has 96 slots and 16 conductors per slot. The flux per pole
is 40mWb and the speed is 960rpm. Find the emf produced if the machine is
i) wave wound
ii) lap wound. 5+5

5. A. i)What is an ELCB?
ii)What do you mean by Earthing or Grounding? What is the purpose of Earthing?

B. A coil of resistance 100Ω and inductive reactance 200Ω is connected across a
supply voltage of 230V. Find the supply current.

6. A. i) What is the function of chopper?


ii)Find the Thevenin’s equivalent circuit at terminals AB for the network shown
below and hence determine the power dissipated in a 5Ω resistor connected
between A and B. 5+5

B. Draw power triangle and show active power, reactive power and apparent power.
An alternating voltage is given by v= 141.4sin314t. Find
i) frequency,
ii) RMS value,
iii) Average value,
iv) the instantaneous value of voltage when t is 3 ms. 2+2+2+4

7. A. i) Define speed regulation.
ii) A 6 pole 3 phase induction motor is connected to 50Hz supply. It is running at
970 rpm. Calculate the slip. 5+5

B. i) What is slip? What do you mean by slip speed?
ii)What will be the rotor frequency for a 3 phase 1000 RPM 6 pole induction
motor is running with a slip of 0.04? 5+5

8. A. i) How can eddy current loss be minimised?


ii) A 20kW, 200V shunt generator has an armature resistance of 0.05Ω and a shunt
field resistance of 200Ω. Calculate the power developed in the armature when it
delivers rated output. 5+5

B. i)‘The capacity rating of a transformer is given in kVA not in kW’- Why?
ii)The primary winding of a 50 Hz transformer is supplied from a 440V, 50Hz
source and has 200 turns. Find the
a) peak value of flux,
b) voltage induced in the secondary winding if it has 50 turns. 5+5

9. A. i) How can we improve the power factor?


ii)A 6-pole lap wound dc generator has 250 armature conductors, a flux of 0.04 Wb
per pole and runs at 1200 rpm. Find the generated emf. 5+5

B. i) What do you mean by balanced 3 phase star connected system?
ii) Using star- delta conversions find the equivalent resistance between terminals A
and B in the network shown below. 5+5

10. A. i) Define synchronous speed.


ii)A 10 pole induction motor is supplied by a 6 pole alternator, which is driven at
1400 rpm. If the motor runs with a slip of 2%, what is its speed? 5+5

B. i) What is rotor frequency?
ii) A 3 phase induction motor has 4 poles and is supplied from 50Hz supply
system.
Calculate
a) the synchronous speed,
b) speed of the motor when slip is 4%
c) rotor current frequency when the speed of the motor is 600rpm. 5+5
