Tutorial-1

1. A BLDC has a torque constant of 0.12 N m/A referred to the dc supply.

a) Estimate its no-load speed in rpm when connected to a 48 V dc supply.
b) If the armature resistance is 0.15 Ω/phase and the total voltage drop in the controller
transistors is 2 V, determine the stall current and the stall torque.
c) The dc current is 8.2 A when the motor is delivering 330 W of mechanical power to a load
at 3400 rpm The motor is star-connected and has two phases on at any instant, with a total
of 2 V dropped across the two conducting transistors in series; this voltage drop can be
assumed constant. The friction torque has been separately measured as 0.046 N m at this
speed. If the supply voltage is 48 V dc, calculate the efficiency of the complete drive and
the separate power loss components due to
(a) voltage drop in the transistors; (b) winding resistance; (c) friction; and (d) iron loss. If
the iron loss is modelled means of a resistor connected in parallel with each phase of
the motor, determine the value of this resistance.

2. A 3-ϕ, four-pole BLDC has 36 stator slots. Each phasewinding is made up of three coils per
pole with 30 turns per coil. The coil span is seven slots. If the fundamental componentof
magnetflux is 1.8 mWb.
a) Calculate the open circuit phase emf equation at 5000 rpm.
b) What is the torque at 5000 rpm if the phase current is4.0 A?
c) The phase resistance is 3.7 Ω and the leakage reactance is 5 mH. With the phase current
of 4.0 A at 5000 rpm, calculate the terminalvoltage and the power-factor.

3. A permanent-magnet dc commutator motor has a stall torque of 1 N m with a stall current of

5 A.
a) Estimate its no-load speed in rpm when fed from a 28 V dc voltage supply.
b) During an overload the motor temperature becomes excessive and the magnets lose 12
per cent of their remnant flux-density. If the armature resistance is 0.8 Ω, determine the
speed at which the motor will run when the load torque is 0.3 N m. Assume a total brush
voltage drop of 2 V and a supply voltage of 28 V dc. Ignore friction and other losses.

4. A BLDC motor has the cross-section shown in the Fig. 4 with r1 =30 mm, lm = 8 mm, g = 0.8
mm, and axial lengthl=35 mm. Slotting is neglected and a single full-pitch stator coil is
shown with 30 turns. The ceramic magnet has Br = 0.35 T,µrec = 1, and Hc = 278 kA/m. The
current in the stator coil is zero.
a) CalculateBg in the airgap at the center of the magnet arc, i.e., on the direct axis.
b) Determine the mmf across the magnet and the internal magnetizing force Hm.
c) Calculate the flux-linkage of the stator coil in the position shown.
d) Determine the waveform and the peak value of the emf induced in the stator coil if the
rotor rotates at 4000 rpm.
e) Iff the magnetts require a magnetizing
m force of 16000 kA/m to magnetize
m thhem, estimatte the
cooil current required
r to magnetize
m thhem in placee. Comment on the feasiibility of in-place
m
magnetization n.
