Green Revolution: A Review
By Ayesha Ameen and Shahid Raza

There have been many changes in the methods of agriculture in our country. High –yielding
varieties of seeds are being used. These have been an increase in the use of fertilizers and
irrigation. Large areas of land have been brought under cultivation. Farmers have been provided
with better facilities like loans, better seeds, fertilizers and modern machinery which have help in
increasing the production of crops. All this has made Mexico, India, Pakistan and other country
self –sufficient in the production of food grains and other crops. This is known as the “Green
Revolution”. Green revolution is one of the most important events of the 21 st century and it is
led in too many millions of people being fed and the otherwise would have starved or gone
hungry. A green revolution refers most generally to increase to the productivity of agriculture.
But our green revolution starts with Norman Borlaug an American scientist in the mid 1940’s he
found himself working in Central Mexico a part of a Rockfeller Foundation Program to improve
crop yields. In the early 1960’s the Green Revolution started to spread to South Asia, most
notably India and Pakistan, and this was due in large part to the personal effort of Norman
Borlaug.

This article Green Revolution: a Review by Ayesha Ameen and Shahid Raza talks about a series
of research, development, and technology transfer initiatives, occurring between 1943 and the
late 1970’s in Mexico, which increased industrialized agriculture production in many developing
countries: Green Revolution. Anyone of us can contribute in this new era. But do we really know
what Green Revolution is? In this article, Ameen and Raza succeed by giving a very clear
explanation about each topic like; what is Green Revolution, the different agricultural
techniques, the positive or advantages and disadvantages of Green Revolution and lastly,
criticisms of Green Revolution. They also want to expose us to things that we should consider in
making assumption about Green Revolution.

Profoundly, this article has a lot of explanation with some example to prove the authors’
thoughts. These examples made the authors arguments more credible and it’s made me eager to
know more explanation about the given example. The authors also did a great job emphasizing
and organizing their points in this article.

Many significant points also made me amaze it just like I’m reading a discovery book for the
first time in my life. I’m an agriculture student but this topic Green Revolution put me in an
History class. Through this article review it also helped me understand more the overview of
Green Revolution and its pros and con to agriculture and also to the farmers. Second Green
Revolution is also a remarkable topic in this article. For it is true second green revolution is a
change in agricultural production widely thought necessary to feed and sustain the growing
population on Earth. These calls came about as response to rising food commodity prices.
