None Ma’am.

Will you give another benefit?

Quality of life/Active lifestyle

Good!
Eating a balanced diet is important because it
allows you to enjoy life. You would be able to
live an active lifestyle. Because both the body
and mind are in a good state, they would
coordinate effectively and be able to live
actively. We are stress-free and worry-free.
Who among you are having quality of life or
active lifestyle (Answers vary)

Those are some benefits of eating a balanced

diet.
Do you have anything to add with regards to
the benefits of eating a balanced diet? None Ma’am.

Since you don’t have any question, let us go

to the basic food groups. Ideally, a balanced
diet should include foods from the four basic
food groups which comprise a foundation
diet. The fifth group provides additional
calories but fewer nutrients.
Will you please give the first food group? Breads, cereals, and other grains which are
rich in energy-giving, carbohydrates, B
vitamins and selenium and contain iron and
Very good! calcium.

Carbohydrates give energy, B vitamins plays

important role in cell metabolism, calcium
helps build strong bones, iron transports
oxygen from your lungs to the rest of the body
and selenium helps in the prevention of cancer.
Will you give example of these foods?
Oatmeal, corn flakes, rice, pasta, etc.

Very good!
Is everything clear to you?
Yes Ma’am.
Will you give the second food group? Fruits and vegetables which are high in
nutrients and low in calories and provides
vitamins A, C and E, minerals and fiber.
Good!
Vitamin A for good eyesight, bone
development. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)
prevents scurvy. Vitamin E decreases the risk
of cancer. Minerals are good for metabolism
and fiber is good for proper digestion of foods. Fruits: watermelon, strawberry, grapes, apple,

Vegetables: carrots, string beans, radish, okra,
mustard, cabbage, etc.

Milk and dairy foods which are good sources

What is the third food group? of calcium and provide protein.

Very good!
Calcium helps build strong bones and protein
which is very important in growth,
maintenance and repair of cells. Yoghurt, cheese, milk, etc.

third food group?

Poultry, fish, meat, eggs, legumes, nuts and

What is the fourth food group? seeds which are the main source of protein
which is essential for most of body’s vital
functions.

Very good!
The fourth food group is the main source of
protein which is very important in growth,
maintenance and repair of cells.
Is there anything that you would like to clarify
about the fourth food group? None Ma’am.

What is the fifth and last food group? Fats and sweets are most concentrated source
of calorie in our diet that provides twice as
much energy as carbohydrates or protein.

Very good!
This fifth food group is not recommended
because even if it can provide carbohydrates, it
will just give additional calories but fewer
nutrients. So if we know that the food doesn’t
have nutrients, then we better avoid it, or if not
just have it occasionally.
What are the examples of these foods? Candies, chips, chocolates, etc.

Very good!
Most of the children like these kinds of food.
They always have too much salt, too much
sweets and MSG.
How do categorize these kinds of food? These are often categorized as ‘junk foods’.

Good!
Do you have any question regarding the food
groups? None Ma’am.

4. Application

Let us have an activity. All you need are pencil,

paper and coloring materials.

Procedure:
1. Try to recall and make a list of all the
foods you ate yesterday.
2. Classify then into group following the
food pyramid.
3. Explain the importance of these
nutrients in the body.
I am giving you ten minutes to finish the
activity.
Is that clear? Yes ma’am.

Okay you may start the activity. (Students do the activity.)

Are you finished? Yes Ma’am.

You may pass your work.

(Teacher calls five students in random to
discuss their work.)
