DISCLAIMER

This report was compiled by Danie du Plessis of LNW Consulting Engineers and Project Managers (Pty) Ltd (LNW)
for South32 Hillside Aluminium (Hillside) in accordance with the scope determined by Hillside and stipulated in
Purchase Order 4541895216. The scope of work called for a detailed design of a hydraulic ingot bundle clamp.

1. INTRODUCTION
This document gives technical specifications of the Hydraulic Ingot Bundle Clamp (HIBC). It provides basic
information of the equipment and how it is used

2. BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The HIBC is an attachment tool which is used with a forklift truck (forklift) to load and offload ingot bundles
on and off a trailer. The HIBC can grab 1, 2 or 4 bundles of Aluminium ingots as illustrated in Figure 1. The
HIBC uses a hydraulically controlled clamp-action and the forklift’s hoisting, side-shift and forward/rearward
tilt actions to control the movement and placing of the bundles. The clamp opens and closes from both sides,
symmetrically about the center plane of the clamp zone, with the aid of 2 hydraulic cylinders.

An Ingot bundle size and mass is illustrated in Figure 2 (from References: 5.2)

3. PHYSICAL BUILD OF EQUIPMENT

The HIBC components are detailed in the drawing from References: 5.1. Below, in Figure 3, the equipment
assembly is described. In concept it consists of a frame and 2 clamp structures which opens and closes to
grab the load. The frame is attached to the forklift carriage with a pin at the top and contact at the bottom
while a grab bracket at the bottom prevents separation between the forklift carriage and the HIBC frame.
The clamps are attached to the frame via a system of sliding rods and sleeves. Opening and closing
movements and forces of the clamps are controlled with 2 hydraulic cylinders which are connected to the
forklift’s auxiliary hydraulic function via the hydraulic manifold which is mounted on the frame.

4. DETAILED SPECIFICATIONS
4.1. Mass and dimensions (also refer to Figure 4)
4.2. Work load limit: 4.5 t
4.3. HIBC mass: 4.9 t
4.4. Maximum bundle height: 1 116 mm
4.5. Maximum clamp tip clearance opening: 1 630 mm
4.6. Minimum required forklift lifting range: 4 025 mm, which includes:
trailer load height: 1 525 mm (from References: 5.3)
2 off design bundle height 2 200 mm
Load-over clearance: 300 mm (as recommended by Hyster)
In this 300 mm load-over clearance the following tolerances are included:

Undulated ground allowance: 50 mm (e.g. bundle is 50 mm below forklift level)

Tolerance: 50 mm (e.g. tyre deflection)
4.7. Forklift model: Hyster H14XD-6
The HIBC could also be used on different forklift models but each application has to be evaluated by a
Professional Engineer to ensure the forklift is suitable and the attachment points are compatible between
the forklift and HIBC.
4.8. Hydraulic sideshift function used to adjust lateral positioning
4.9. Pin type integral sideshift frame carriage on forklift
4.10. Auxiliary hydraulic function of forklift is used for clamp open and close functions

4.11. Required auxiliary pressure: approximately 100 bar (functional pressure is reduced in the
dedicated hydraulic manifold on the HIBC)
4.12. Clamp close force: 5t
4.13. Clamp open force: 2t
