1. GENERAL
1.1 Scope
(1) This construction specification covers general requirements for precast concrete piling work.
(2) Work not included: Pile cap work
(3) Other type of piles such as timber piles, cast in site concrete piles, composite piles, steel piles
and etc. are not included in this specification
(4) The work shall consist of supplying all labor, materials, tools equipment, supervision,
transportation, temporary construction other items necessary for furnishing and installing piles as
shown on the design drawings
2. SUBMITTAL
3. TYPE OF PILE
3.1 Many types of piles such as Steel pile, PC pile, PHC pile, RC pile, Micro pile, Steel “H” pile, Timber pile
and etc. are used for plant construction. Pile type shall be selected following LCI approval.
3.2 Pile Type, Allowable Pile Capacity and Driving Method shall be selected referring to Geotechnical
Report or relevant documents.
3.3 Piles of prestressed concrete pile (PC) and pretensioned spun high strength concrete pile (PHC) shall
be designed in strict accordance with ACI 543 and JIS A5335. Following sections 4 to 7 are
recommended practices for PC, PHC driven pile.
4.1 Preparation
1) All equipment shall be inspected minimum 1 (one) week before start of the work. Crane shall be
certified by authorized department
2) All crew including supervisor shall be skilled and experienced with Piling Procedures and
Operations
3) Survey to determine coordinate/ location of driving points will be done to ensure conformance
with Piling Plan drawings and is subject to inspection. Contractor will perform an independent
general check and each pile location coordinate will be confirmed prior to driving on each
location. Different types of marking shall be applied to driving points to show different type of
piles to be driven by diameter and length
4) The pile materials are to be transported from the stock yard area to piling area by flatbed truck.
Crawler crane will then lift from truck and store for piling operation.
5) Hammer base or cushion block is to be provided and shall be replaced periodically. (Hydraulic
type of hammer shall be used, to minimize environmental impact)
6) Use 2 sets of optical device (including total station, theodolite, and waterpass) to check
verticality of pile prior to pile driving. This procedure also shall be carried out before welding
work for pile splicing. Position of the device should form an angle of between 80 to 100 degrees.
7) Lift the pile and align with the center of the pile hammer. Allow the pile to drop and rest on the
ground. Adjust leader to ensure that the pile stands vertically on the right position.
8) Each pile shall be clearly marked in paint with its number and its overall length. In addition,
each pile shall be marked at intervals of 500 mm to enable easy
determination of pile penetration. Where necessary, the intervals shall be reduced to 250 mm as
directed.
9) If required, initial boring on pile location should be carried out to avoid effect of vibration due to
piling driving.
3) Lifting pile and Positioning pile on the driving point. Positioning shall be controlled by Theodolite,
or Total Station.
4) Drive the first pile segment.
5) Position second pile segment and align properly.
6) Check vertically of pile.
7) Fully welding joint plates.
8) Calendaring record shall be done prior to pile driving is finished. Refer to blow count analysis.
Refer to ACI 543 Design, Manufacture, and Installation of Concrete Piles.
9) Pile driving records are to be filled using formats agreed with the LCI Engineer.
10) Drive each pile continuously and without interruptions either to refusal or until
the required depth of penetration or driving resistance has been attained based
on driving criteria in the foundation drawings. Final tip elevation or blow count is subject to
inspection.
11) Cut top of spun pile with cutting machine to reach final Pile Cut Of (PCO) elevation.
12) The positional and verticality tolerances of vertical piles shall not exceed the following limits:
The above limits shall also apply for piles installed in a single line. For pile group of three or
more piles not installed in a single line, the positional tolerance of the
individual pile in the group may exceed the above limits. However, the
positional tolerance of the center of gravity of the pile group shall be 50 mm. Any pile or pile
group with position and verticality deviating more than the above mentioned
limits must be reviewed and re-engineered regarding instructed and approved by
owner.
13) Plywood formwork underneath pile head treatment should be provided prior to
installation of reinforcement and pile head concrete pouring.
1) Pile joint shall be welded in accordance with the design drawings. Parts to be welded shall be
cleaned from rust, mud, and all other foreign matters. Type of welding shall be
separated into two parts.
-Steel Pipe Piles
Ends of pipe to be spliced shall be beveled. Back-up ring or alignment clips shall be used
to ensure alignment for welding. Splices shall be full penetration butt
welds with minimum two layer/passes. A maximum of two joint splices per pile is
allowed.
-PC Spun Piles
Splices shall be partial penetration butt welds. A minimum of two joint splices per pile is allowed.

4.4 Completion
1) On completion of installation of piles, the piles shall be cut-off to the required level as shown on
the drawings and to a tolerance of ±10 mm or otherwise as instructed. Where a pile has been
formed below the required cut-off level, it shall be built up
2) Keep area cleaned after ex piling works.
3) Ensure daily clean up of construction areas, remove backfilling material, and reinstallation of
safety barricades.
4) Contractor shall keep records of the installation of every pile and shall submit to owner within 24
hours of driving.
5. INSPECTION
Pile shall be made available for inspection before proceeding with the next work stage described in
Inspection and Test Plan (ITP) for piling work.
note:
M = Perform & Witness
W = Witness
R = Review
SW = Spot Witness
H = Hold point
PDA Test shall be performed according to applied specification on pile test locations as indicated on
drawing approved.
6. EQUIPMENT
7. SAFETY REQUIREMENT
All operation in connection with pile load testing shall be carried out in such a manner so as to
minimize, avoid or eliminate the exposure of people to hazards.
