2. GENERAL DESCRIPTION-SUMMARY
2.1. General
The Foremost F-150T-20 hydraulic top drive is a heavy duty unit with a proven compact
hydraulic top drive system. The F-150T-20 consists of a rugged gear box assembly which
can be driven by various hydraulic motor combinations, to produce a wide variety of
speeds and torques for drilling performance or rig design. Originally the F-150T-20 was
designed to operate in a vertical mast assembly with no set back. Since then the unit has
been adapted to operate in set back masts, such as the type used in service/workover rigs
very successfully. It is suited for permanent installations in smaller “Super Single” or
“stiff mast” type rigs; however, various options are available for installation into
telescoping doubles, slant rigs, free standing, guided masts or service/workover rigs.
Feature Advantages:
¾ Compact proven design supported by more than 25 years of hydraulic top drive
design and manufacturing.
¾ Three (3) position valve to select 1, 2 or 3 motors, selectable from control panel.
¾ Integrated split block configuration for reduced stack up, API 8C rated.
¾ Can be adapted to any type of mast in the drilling, construction and workover
industry.
¾ Standard sheaves used on Top Drives are Composite, which are lighter and
improved cable life.

The main gear box is a rugged design for a variety of hydraulic or A/C electric
drive options. The hydraulic motors are splined directly into the pinion gears for
easy alignment of motor and gears. The three (3) motors are bolted to the top of
the pinion gears, with two (2) of the motors being stacked and driving one (1) of
the pinion gears and the other motor driving the opposite pinion gear.
There are a total of three (3) gears, two (2) pinion gears and one (1) bull gear.
These gears are helical cut gears, which reduce the gear noise generated by the
box, and increasing gear life.
The top set of pinion bearings and Bull gear bearings are force lubricated from a
gear pump driven off of one of the pinion shafts. The lower set of bearings and
the gears are all splash lubricated.
Mounted on the side of the gear box are an oil level sight glass and a powered
proximity sensor that monitors the RPM of the pinion gear.
*The above specifications are maximums and are subject to the motor input.

The standard hydraulic motor group for the F-150T utilizes three fixed
displacement Rineer vane motors in conjunction with a hydraulic valve assembly
to direct flow to one, two or all three motors. Actual top drive performance is
based on the hydraulic power system selected. The following performance is
based on a hydraulic power source capable of providing 130 US gpm @ 4,500 psi
continuous (5,000 psi max. for breakout)
The performance may vary slightly between the different top drives, due to the
inefficiencies in performance of such items as the motor, gear box hydraulic
components and the hydraulic pump. Also the performance of the top drive may
vary slightly with the operation of the unit due to normal wear of the components.
Other options such as the two (2) hydraulic motor design, top drive are available
as an option.
A torque tube assembly is mounted into the mast and supported in three (3) areas;
the standard torque tube option is for a 32 m (105 ft.) telescoping mast. Other
lengths and configurations are available upon request.
The torque tube assembly consists of an 8 in x 12 in. HSS tube column that is in
two (2) parts. The top half of the tube is fixed to the Crown with a welded
bracket, the centre section of the tube is connected to the mast with a tube in tube
fixture and the bottom of the tube is fixed to the rig floor through a pinned foot
assembly. At the mast transition point “where the telescoping occurs” the torque
tube is pinned together for easy removal. The mast is retracted during rig out and
the bottom of the foot is kicked out to allow for the mast to retract. Once the mast
is in the lowered position, the pin is removed between the top and the bottom
sections of the torque tube and the bottom section is lowered to the ground with a
winch. In order to transport the top drive in the mast, the centre support is
manually retracted into the mast and pinned. This reduces the transport height of
the unit.
If the Top Drive is to be removed from the mast during transportation the bracket
is unbolted from the Top Drive and lowered to the ground with the winch.
The torque tube guide is bolted to the top drive gear box and consists of nylon
guide bushings, allowing for a smooth transition up and down the torque tube.

In order for Foremost to supply the customer with a proper torque tube that will
meet their requirements, the customer is to supply Foremost with a set of
drawings for the mast, which the torque tube is being mounted into, indicating the
cross members which the stabilizer mounts are to be welded to. Foremost will
supply a recommended welding procedure, in order to weld these stabilizers to
the mast cross members. It is the customers’ responsibility to ensure that the mast
is designed to except the extra torque load that the top drive will transfer into the
mast. It is also the customer’s responsibility to ensure that proper qualified
personnel complete the work to the mast and that an engineer or engineering firm
certifies the completed work. It is also the responsibility for the customer to make
certain that the mast is recertified if required.
As a standard arrangement the top drive is offered with a (4) sheave arrangement,
eight (8) part line arrangement. Other options are available which will allow the
use of three (3) sheaves, six (6) part line. Also available upon request are different
diameter sheaves and different sheave grooves, depending upon the size of cable
being used.
In the standard configuration the four (4) sheaves are mounted onto a bracket
which is bolted to the side of the gear box. Also incorporated into the same
brackets are the bail lugs and bushings. The unit uses two (2) – 609.6 mm (24 in.)
diameter composite sheaves for 22 mm (1-1/8 in.) cable (F-150T-20 hoisting
capacity, 136,364 kg (300,000 lbs).
Mounted on the top of the gear box and attached to the top of the spindle, is the
mud/air inlet group. This group consists of wash pipe assembly, gooseneck and
hammer union. The packing arrangement allows for the operation of the unit with
either mud/air/nitrogen. Offered as an option is a hydraulically actuated mud
valve that is mounted between the swivel packing assembly and the gooseneck.

The cylinders are complete with counter balance vales that hold
the cylinders in the kick-out position.
4.7. Hydraulics
Depending on the number of hydraulic functions that are required at the Top
Drive, may determine how the hydraulic system is hosed. If there are a small
number of circuits, no more than two (2) then the hydraulic circuits can be run
from the deck of the unit. However if there are more than two (2) circuits, it is
recommended that a hydraulic manifold, containing the different directional
control valves to actuate the different functions be installed onto the top drive.
These directional controls contain electric over hydraulic directional control
valves. This means that there are now only two (2) hoses that are required to be
run from a hydraulic source to the Top Drive. There is also a control cable that
will be run from a junction box on the deck of the unit to a junction box on the
Top Drive.
Mounted onto the Top Drive is also a junction box that will contain all of the
terminations and connections between the control cable and the directional
control valve solenoids. The electrical is compliant with a non-hazardous area for
Alberta, Canada, and depending upon the requirements for areas in other areas of
the world, the requirements may change.
The different functions that are available are: Back-up wrench extension, Back-up
wrench clamp, Bale Kick-out cylinders, Brake, Hydraulic motor controls, Mud
Saver Valve and hydraulic elevator controls.

A temperature differential of 10ºC (50ºF) between the hydraulic system and the
top drive motors must not be exceeded. In situations where the top drive will be
operated after the hydraulic system is already up to temperature, a procedure must
be followed to eliminate the thermal shock. The top drive must be rotated at
approximately 20% input flow, under no load, in low range for 5 to 10 minutes
prior to use. The control valve for the Top Drive has incorporated into it a
recirculation mode, which allows the hydraulic oil to by-pass the top drive, thus
aiding in the heat up of the hydraulic circuit.
