III. Procedures
A. Preparatory Activities (3 minutes)
 Prayer (May I request someone to lead the prayer.)
 Greetings (Good morning Class! Before you take your seats, I want you to pick up
trashes on the floor, arrange your chairs properly, and maintain social distancing)
 Checking of Attendance (How are you class? May I know who is absent today?)
 Imposing of Classroom Rules (I just want to remind you about our classroom rules)
a. Please wear your facemasks all the time.
b. Avoid sharing personal items with your classmates and clean your hands with
alcohol or sanitizer.
c. Do not use gadgets during class hours.
d. Raise your hand if you want to answer or if you have something to say.
e. Keep unnecessary things not related to our subject.
f. If you wish to go to the CR, just raise the peace sign.
g. Pay respect. Listen when someone is talking in front.

B. Motivation
The teacher will let the students analyze a logic problem. (You have three minutes to do
the task.)
Brainstorming: Five students are standing in line. CANDY is not the last. MEL is directly
ahead of ANGIE. JOHNNY has a girl directly in front of him and directly behind him. SAMSON is
not last. JOHNNY is somewhere ahead of ANGIE. Name the students in order from first to last.

The teacher will be calling students to answer the questions.

Process Questions:
1. Who is the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth student in the line?
2. What is the problem all about?
3. What is position then?

Position refers to a place where someone or something is located or has been put or placed.
Indicator 1
When you are still in grade 8, you were able learn Basketball positions in MAPEH. Who among
you here are fun of playing basketball or watching basketball? Who are your idols? Are you
aware of the position or role that they are playing?

There are five basic positions and role in basketball.

1. Centre position is usually the team’s tallest and strongest player and is positioned
under the basket. He is also required to be physically domineering with more physical
strength and athleticism.
2. Power Forward position are usually the second tallest in the team and are the
clsoest to the centre in terms of physical attributes and playing style but with more
speed. They are often the most versatile player, being able to score in the paint as well
as being able to shoot from midrange.
3. Small Forward position is usually the shorter of the two forwards on the team but
plays the most versatile role of the main five positions. He must have enough height
and the ability to play on the inside as well as agility to play on the outside, similar to a
shooting guard. Small forwards are usually the second or third best shooters on the
team and should be able to do a little bit of everything on the court.
4. Shooting Guard Position is potentially the shortest player on the team and best
outside shooter. Besides being able to shoot well, the shooting guard needs to be good
at dribbling fast, passing and having court vision by seeing the court.
5. Point Guard Position is usually the shortest but the best ball handler on the team.
Also known as the “coach on the floor” or the “floor general”, a point guard is
responsible for directing plays. He needs to have a good court vision to create open
shots for the receivers as well as drive the ball down to the court and initiate offensive
plays. They need to have an excellent long-distance shooting, though it’s not quite as
crucial as for shooting guards take as many shots as shooting guards.

The teacher also talks on the famous basketball players in the Philippines who excels will in the
position that they are playing. Then, he will emphasize that the game basketball is just a sport
and should not be taken seriously. There are times that players maybe get hurt in playing but
it is just part of the game. They must show sportsmanship towards their opponents.

The teacher will say, in Mathematics there is also a so called “Measures of position” and let us
all learn and find out what it is all about.

C. Presentation of the learning targets

This morning we will discuss on the Measures of Position. There are three Measures of
Position: Quartiles, Deciles and Percentiles. These Measures of Positions have two types of
data the Ungrouped Data and Grouped Data. But for today’s lesson we will focus on Measures
of Position of Quartiles for Ungrouped Data.

(The teacher will be calling three students to read their learning targets.)
Learning Targets:
At the end of the period:
 I can define Quartiles of Ungrouped Data.
 I can determine the Quartiles (Q1, Q2, and Q3) of Ungrouped data.
 I can calculate the Quartiles (Q1, Q2, and Q3) of Ungrouped data.

D. Discussion Proper

The teacher will start the discussion by asking the students what is Ungrouped data? He will let
the students give their own definition or own understanding regarding ungrouped data.

(We will now discuss the quartiles for ungrouped data and how to calculate each quartile in a
given set of data. What is/are ungrouped data?)
(Let me introduce to you the measures of position of ungrouped data.)

Given the samples of data:

1. (1, 2, 5, 7, 9, 11, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17)
2. (1, 2, 5, 7, 9)
3. (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 8, 12, 13, 12, 5, 7, 9, 13, 7, 27, 16, 7, 31, 30, 24, 25, 30, 36, 42,
53, 57, 12, 14, 25)

Process Questions:
1. How many elements are there in number 1, 2, 3?
2. Based from the examples, who can define what is ungrouped data?

Ungrouped data are those data which are not yet organized or arranged into frequency
distribution. It is basically a list if numbers.

Measures of Position tell where a specific data value falls within the data set or its relative
position in comparison with other data values. The most common measures of position are
quartiles, deciles and percentiles.

(What is your understanding of the word quartile? It comes from what word? What do you
mean by the word quart?)

The teacher will give an activity to students that will help them understand and define the
word quartile.

Activity 1
Instructions:
 Arrange the list of numbers in ascending order.
 Then cut the list into four equal parts.
 The Quartiles are at the cuts. What are the Quartiles?

(Based on the activity given, will you define quartiles now?)

Quartiles are the score points which divide the distribution into four equal parts.

Q1 Q2 Q3

Lower Quartile Middle Quartile Upper Quartile

We have 3 quartiles, Q1, Q2, and Q3. Q1 is called the lower quartile or the first quartile and Q3
is the upper quartile or the third quartile and Q1<Q2<Q3, where Q 2 is nothing but the median.
When we say median it is the middle value when the number of items is odd or the average of
the two middle values when the number of items in the distribution is even. The difference
between Q3 and Q1 is called the interquartile range.

25% of the data has value ≤ Q1.

50% of the data has a value ≤ Q2
75% of the data has a value of ≤ Q3.

How are you going to determine the lower, middle and the upper Quartile of a given set of
data?
We have the so-called Mendenhall and Sincich Method. It is a method of finding the quartile
value of a given set of data.

First, we have to calculate the position of the Lower Quartile or the first quartile. We will use
this formula.

1
Q1= (n+1) where n represents the total number of elements or terms.
4

What about calculating the position of the Middle Quartile and Upper Quartile or the third
quartile? What do you think will be the formula?

2 3
Q2= (n+1) Q3= ( n+1 ) ,where n again represent the total number of elements.
4 4
Remember:
If the Q1 is decimal, round off to the nearest integer.

If the Q3 is decimal, round down to the nearest integer.

Let us have an example

The scores of 7 students in a Mathematics seatwork are: 7, 4, 3, 6, 7, 4, 8. Find Q1, Q2, and
Q3.

Q2=6
This means 50% of the students have a
score in Mathematics of less than or equal to
6.

To further enhance your knowledge, let’s practice what you have learned about quartiles by
having another example for you to work on.

Determine the quartiles of the given the scores of 10 students in their Mathematics activity

E. Application
Using the same group, I want you to choose one representative of your group to pick one
envelope from me. Each envelope has a task to do. Inside these envelopes there are problems
for you to solve. Class, please note that you are going to solve together each problem assigned
to your group.
As you solve the problems please be guided with the following criteria to be used during the
activity, kindly read…
(The teacher will present the rubrics of the activity.)

Mr. John Smith conducted an action research about computer addiction among Junior High
School students. The 15 students of Grade 10-Dove in Lapuyan National High School who
are required to attend remedial classes were used as respondents of his research. He
asked the students on the numbers hours they usually spent in playing computer daily.
The following data were collected by Mr. Smith: 3, 12, 7, 10, 5, 11, 12, 8, 2, 4, 3, 1, 6, 5,
9. Find Q1, Q2, and Q3.

The teacher will let 1 student per group to report and explain their output.

Indicator 2
Since we are talking about computer addiction, presently it is the most rampant problem
in students that negatively affects cognitive functioning, that leads to poor academic
performance and physical damages, increases anxiety and depression to them.
Activity 2
Strategy: Graphic Organizers
Using a graphic organizer, write the things you can do to help people who are addicted to
computer games.

Process Questions:
As a student, what will you do if one of your classmates is addicted to computer games and is
not an
F. Generalization
As a recap, the quartiles are the score points which divide the distribution into how many
parts? 25% of the data has a value of what? 50% of the data has a value of what? 75% of the
data has a value of what? Before using the formula of quartiles, what is the very important
thing that you must do first with the given set of data?

G. Evaluation
1. The number of games won by a famous basketball team each year from the year 1991 to
the year 2005 are 20, 25, 20, 23, 38, 48, 37, 22 45, 35, 50, 35, 45, 30 and 35. Solve Q 1, Q2,
and Q3.
2. The scores of 10 students in Mathematics remedial classes are the following 15, 10, 17, 8,
12, 11, 14, 17, 18, 13. Find Q1, Q2, and Q3.
