CHAPTER 1: The Problem and its Background

Introduction

The average time a student spends in school is about six to seven and

a half hours a day, with each subject having fifty to sixty minutes per

session. These timeframes are based on the school’s administrators and can

be changed approximately. Those data are based on statistics conducted by

Tenney School located in texas. This means that an average student has 17

hours (including 8 hours of regular sleep) to spend outside of school, which

is commonly used for doing homeworks and routine chores inside the

student’s household. As another school year (2019-2020) starts in Holy

Trinity Academy, a brand new schedule for senior high school students has

been implemented, incorporating a ten-hour school day duration starting

from seven in the morning until five in the evening.Students are left with

only a few hours of time outside school, including time for sleep and house

chores. That is a major outlier in terms of the statistics gathered by Tenney

School, having a three hour difference.

Because of this, we must ask if longer periods of school days improve

the academic performance of the students. This would have an impact on a

student’s habitual routine, because of the two hour difference. It would lead

to the rearrangment of routine activities such as, time of sleep and time for

leisurely activities, therefore creating nuisances in his/her usual schedule.

Another problem that arises from this is the constant stress a student has
to go through for 10 hours in school with only having a maximum of 70

minutes of break/lunch time to rest. This pairs up with the students’ attention

span lasting only for a short amount of time before the brain starts to get

distracted.According to Bonner (2012), The time and frequency could affect

student learning while Reller (2010) stated that the schedule affects the

pace of the student and teacher interactions and the schedule influence;

whether block or traditional, cannot be undermined. however, time alone

does not appear to be a single variable by which student academic

achievement can improve in all content areas.

The purpose of the study is to tackle the newly implemented ten-hour

class schedule, its effects on the academic performance of the students and

listing down the positive and negative effects.

Significance of the study

The researchers conducted the study so that they could get to know

the effects of having ten-hour classes on a student's academic performance.

The findings of the study will benefit the following:

School Administration. By being able to review the perception of students

regarding ten-hour classes, therefore having supporting data on whether the

school should continue implementing the system because of its benefits or if

they should cancel it because of its drawbacks.

Students. Those students who are about to enroll in classes with the same

time implementation in particular, because the study will include the positive

and negative effects of having a ten-hour class schedule, so that the

students would know if its favorable or not.

Future researchers. They will benefit from the insight and information

regarding class schedule, the effect of work hours on the capabilities of a

person, benefits of being in school for a long duration, as well as, the

effectivity of having ten-hour classes in schools.

Conceptual Framework

The framework shows the positive and the negative effects of the new

schedule of 10-hour class duration are acquired through the use of

questionnaires regarding the new class schedule, as well as supporting

details on the implications and implementation of the ten-hour schedule. The

framework below demonstrates the well-ordered procedure that the analysts

have done to finish the conduction of the study. The researchers gave their

respondents survey questionnaires in order to observe whether the effects of

the new schedule engendered benefits and/or drawbacks. The acquired

information was used in order to construct a conclusion on whether ten-hour

schedules should continue to be implemented by the school’s curriculum.

Statement of the Problem

The researchers want to identify the possible effects of ten hour class

duration on student’s performance.

More specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:

1. What are the effects of ten-hour class duration on student’s performance

1.1 Positive?

1.2 Negative?

2. Which of the effects affected the academic performance of students more?

3. What are the implications of the result?

4. Should a review on the implementation of ten hour class duration be

conducted?
Scope and Delimitations of the Study

This study focuses on the effects of ten-hour class duration to

student’s performance. The researchers include Grade 12 students from

three following strands: Accounting, Business and Management (ABM),

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Humanities

and Social Science (HUMSS) strand of Senior High School of Holy Trinity

Academy. The researchers will get 23 students per strand to be the

respondents of the research. The researchers will use survey questionnaires

to collect data from the respondents.

The research will not include grade school students, junior high school

students and students who are in a Technical-vocational track in senior high

because their schedule do not follow a ten-hour class duration unlike the

three chosen strands of Holy Trinity Academy.
