ABSTRACT

WE KNOW THAT YOUTHS ARE THE FUTURE OF A NATION, AND SO FOR A NATION’S DEVELOPMENT
THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LOOK AFTER THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE YOUTHS.FOR THIS THE
GOVERNMENT HAVE SEVERAL PLANS AND POLICIES FOR THE YOUTHS.OUT OF THEM ONE OF IT IS
THE CONCEPT OF YOUTH HOSTEL. YOUTH HOSTELS ARE MADE FOR THE YOUTHS HAVING THE
MISSION:

“OUR MISSIONIS TO ENABLE AND PROMOTETRAVEL,TOURISM,ADVENTURE SPIRIT, NATIONAL

INTEGRATION AND EDUCATION & HEALTH BY PROVIDING HOSTELS OF GOOD STANDARDS TO
MILLIONS OF YOUTH OF LIMITED MEANS DURINGTHEIR TRAVEL AT AFFORDABLE RATE SO
NASUSTAINABLE BASIS AND BY ORGANIZING ADVENTURE AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS AND TO
DEVELOP UNDERSTANDING AMONG YOUTH ABOUT SOCIAL & DEVELOPMENT ALISSUES”
THOUGH IT HAS THE MISSION BUT DESIGNING A YOUTH HOSTEL HAS SEVERAL ISSUES SUCH AS:

 REQUIREMENTS ARE NEVER EVOLVED FROM YOUTH BRAINS!!!

 IN MOST CASES,THE APPEARANCE OF HOSTELS ARE DULL, GLOOMY ,LACK OF

MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION,STATIC IN DEVELOPMENT

 NO SPACE FOR CULTURAL CONGREGATIONS,PROGRAM OR AFFAIRS AS THE OBJECTIVES

INDICATE EQUIPMENTS OF SPORTS/EDUCATION ARE HARDLYAVAILABLE

 THE HOSTELS ARE MEANT MOSTLY FOR ACCOMMODATION AND RENTED FOR NON-YOUTH
TOURISTS.

 EVEN ACCOMMODATIONS ARE NOT DESIGNED BASED ON DIFFERENT AGE CRITERIA

 PROBLEMS OF PRIVACY, SAFETY AND SECURITY
 MANY CASES, PARKING IS NOT ADEQUATE
 FOOD CENTERS ARE HARDLY AVAILABLE IN MOST OF THE HOSTELS
 NOT MEANT FOR VARIOUS SUBJECTS, STREAMS OF AGE GROUPS 13-35
 NO SPACE FOR INTER-INSTITUTION CONFERENCES, SEMINARS, WORKSHOPS
 NO SPACE FOR HANDS-ON-TRAINING

…………….AND MANY MORE

THUS THE PROPOSED DESIGN DEALS WITH THESE CHALLENGES TO PROPOSE A YOUTH
HOSTEL THAT COULD COPE UP WITH THESE ISSUES…

DESIGN OF YOUTH HOSTEL AT MOUNT ABU, RAJASTHAN

1.0 Preamble

Proposed design of Youth hostel in Mt.Abu the requirements of which will be developed from the
youths mind itself. The project will try to buck the current trend in youth hostel design in the
country which focuses in only providing cheap accommodation. Instead it will try to provide a
platform to the youth to improve themselves. It may also act a model for future development of
other youth hostels.

1.1 Goals and objectives of the project

 Provide low cost accommodation for students visiting Mt.Abu.

 Provide a centre for cultural exchange.
 Act as a source of information regarding Mt.Abu’s culture and heritage.
 Reflect the architecture and surroundings of the site.
 The building should address environmental concerns

1.2 Methodology

The entire project was divide into a number of separate steps with each step providing the ground
work required to move on to the next step. Also regular assessment of work was performed by
conducting viva-voce after each critical step in order to locate our faults and provide platform for
exchange of ideas

1.2.1 Study

The first step involved the students being divided in groups of 3 in order to perform case
studies and research on topics knowledge of which was required in order to design the youth
hostel. The work of all the students was shared through a viva-voce in order to share the
information with all. This provided the students with the basic theoretical knowledge required in
order to start designing.

12.2.2 Zoning

Instead of performing zoning in 2d we made a model of the contoured site and performed
zoning in 3d with help of foam. At this stage no detail planning was performed.

12.2.3 Detail plan of dormitories

In this stage the detailed plan of the dormitories along with their exact position on the site
was performed. At the end of this stage the position and plan of the dormitories were fixed. Also
the necessary access roads were tentatively drawn.

12.2.4 Detailed plan of admin block and dining

In this step the the detailed plan of the kitchen and admin block was fixed and the service and
access ramps were also detailed out.

12.2.5 Landscaping and site planning

The landscaping of the site was performed along with placement of service blocks etc.

12.2.6 Final Submission

The final submission of the project had the following requirements

 Design Sheet
 Report
 Model
 A3 Portfolio Page

1.3 Scope of the project

To design a Youth Hostel in Mt. Abu which will act as the social and cultural hub for the
youth. It will provide not only accommodation but also a conducive environment in which one can
grow and expand ones creative endeavours. It will act as a forum were cultural exchange can take
place between different groups of people from different parts of the country and also the world.
Since it is located in Mt.Abu which is an ecologically sensitive zone a green approach is mandatory.
The construction of the youth hostel should disturb the site to the minimum extent possible. Also
the youth hostel should blend in with its surrounding forest land and not stand out in stark
contrast. The amount of cut fill performed should be kept to a minimum in order to make the
project feasible. The energy consumption of the youth hostel should also below in order to keep
maintenance cost as low as possible. However here the project is limited to the architectural
design of the youth hostel only and it does not have other details such as construction/working
drawings, estimation etc.

DESIGN PROGRAMMING

2.0 CONCEPT ADOPTED

The concept for the proposed design of a youth hostel at mount Abu is mainly dependent on what
actually youth hostels are-
-To make it cost effective so to make it affordable for the youths.
-To incorporate safety for woman and the adolescents so to make them risk free.
-To achieve national integration among the youths by different measures.
-To solve the major youth issues by cultivating young minds.
-To make the youths feel the hostel as -a home away from home.
- To accomplish the mission of youth hostel.
-To bring in harmony with the nature.
-And finally to make it attractive for the youths to stay in..

But to achieve goals we need to know the objectives to achieve it..

 To promote travel and tourism by providing the knowledge of the place i.e. Mount Abu by
providing an archive i.e. knowledge centre and also by incorporating the feeling of
contextuality in the design. In Mount Abu contextuality can be brought by incorporating Jain
architecture in one or many forms and also by bringing in contextuality with the
surroundings by incorporating a quantity of flora and fauna in the site.

 Measures have been taken for woman safety where the woman are the youths, mostly
visiting without parents/guardian, thus more vulnerable. So, methods like different men
and woman wings in the dormitory, orienting dorms that allow self-privacy, creating
awareness through different landscaping methods etc. has been incorporated to bring in
woman safety along with bringing national integrity.
DESIGN OF YOUTH HOSTEL AT MOUNT ABU, RAJASTHAN

 Promoting national integration by providing more interaction spaces , common rooms ,

introducing space for cultural events, workshops etc. and by making the surroundings such
to enforce the feeling of national integration among them such as making the building form
such that encourages integration.

 As we know to youth’s sports and adventure is a major part so emphasis has been put to
promote sports and adventure by providing facilities for trekking, a small adventure park and
an indoor sports are to inculcate the feeling of sportiness within everyone.
Also as we know that the minds of the youths are always in the search of exploring a new
thing so, the same can be incorporated in the design by making things hidden and exploring
to the youths when they proceed through the site, which will give them ultimate happiness
in an unknown place...

 Another basic objective of my design is to cater the needs of the different age groups with
different backgrounds. For example in providing dorms the general psychology of different
age groups have been incorporated in planning the needs, sharing, and other measures.

2.1 Site Analysis

2.1.1 Introduction

The site for the youth hostel is situated on the way to Mount Abu near a village called Arana,
which is an eco-village. Mount Abu like the other hills experiences colder climate comparative to
other parts of the state. Also here Mount Abu experiences high rainfall and is the highest among
Rajasthan.

The site for the youth hostel lies in the leeward side of the mountain having an area of 1.288 acre.
The site has a varying topography, where in some parts the slopes are greater than 45 degree and
in some parts less than 10 degree. It can be accessed from a 10 m wide road connecting Mount
Abu to Abu road.
The following are the details about the site:-

2.1.4 Inferences

 Heat from the sun is available mostly during summer months.

 The region receives no rainfall since it is located on the leeward side of the mountain.
 The humidity of Mt.Abu is ideal for human comfort.
 Wind from the southern direction is blocked.
 Cold wind blows from the north during winter months.
 The view is favourable on the northern side.
 There is large diurnal variation of temperature.
 During the winter months temperature drops below human comfort labels
