1. What did Jawaharlal Nehru say about Indian Unity?

• Jawaharlal Nehru says that Indian unity is not something imposed from the outside but rather, “It was something deeper
and within its fold, the widest tolerance of belief and custom was practised and every variety acknowledged and even
encouraged.
• It was Nehru, who coined the phrase, “unity in diversity” to describe the country.
2. Why India is called a Land of unity in diversity?

India is a country of many diversity with

• Different Languages – There are 179 living languages and 1600 dialects (a form of a language used in a particular
region or a particular social group) used in different parts of the country.
• Various types of food - Different food habits are seen in different regions of the country due to diverse climatic
conditions. Sambhar – Dosa, Makki-Ki-Roti, Sarson-Ka-Saag.
• Different Festivals – Due to various religions and harvesting seasons, people of India celebrate different festivals.
Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Onam in Kerala, Bihu in Assam, Makar Sankaranti in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
• Different Religions – Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Jainism and Buddhism.
