EDML 610: FOUNDATIONS OF MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION FINAL PAPER

As stated in the syllabus, you are being asked to write a concept paper—a paper about a term, theory, or model
of multilingual education for your final paper.

The first step is to identify to me by email by Friday, September 11 (with a 24 hour grace period):

 The concept you are choosing

 Three sources that define or apply this concept in empirical research, at least one published in the
past 5 years (please attach to the email)

NOTE: If you have concerns about how to choose a concept, please schedule an office hour with me September
7-10.

I will then approve the topic and perhaps suggest other readings or other topics, or ask for a consultation on
Tuesday, September 15.

The second step is to present an outline of the paper to me in a 15-minute consultation on Thursday,
September 17.

This outline should include (as available from the readings you choose):

o In-text citations for SEVERAL (5-10) sources of academic literature (journal articles, books, or
chapters in edited books) on your term (Creswell, 2014).
o Categories that address the following questions:
 How are these sources defining the term?
 What is the history of this term? Who defined it first and why?
 What are the key components or elements of this term/concept/framework according to
these authors?
 What are the critiques of this framework/term/concept in the literature?
 What are the main arguments in support of this term/concept/framework?
 Do you agree with these critiques and supports? Why or why not?
 Has this term been used in research in Kazakhstan or related contexts? If not, could it
applied in research in this context?
 If yes, how so?
 If not, why not or how might it be modified?

The final step is to submit a written paper Friday, September 18 11:59 pm (with a 24-hour grace period).

Papers submitted after Saturday September 19 11:59 pm without express prior request and permission
will be subject to a 10% penalty for each day it is late.

See the next page for the rubic to be used to assess the final paper, based on the Master’s thesis literature
review assessment rubric.

An impressively wide 4
range of literature is
engaged, covering the
topic area thoroughly.
The paper clearly and 4
completely addresses key
characteristics, theories,
debates and/or issues
underpinning the
concept.
The literature is 4
presented in the form of
themes and subthemes
carefully and convincingly
linked to each other, not
in the form of a ‘shopping
list’ of unconnected
topics.
Within themes and 4
subthemes, the literature
is effectively summarized,
and synthesized.
APA formatting in text 2
and in the reference list is
almost always accurate.
All works in the reference
list are cited in text, and
all works cited in text are
in the reference list
(unless they are “cited in”
other works).

There is very effective 2

use of quotations or
paraphrase throughout.
Grammar, structure, and
expressions are correct
and coherent.
