4.3 The Main Entrance Service Switch (MSES)

The demand load calculation was computed by applying the demand system as follows:
Demand Load = Total of a + b + c, where:
a. 100% of largest of:
1) Load without diversity
2) 125% of the largest motor
3) not less than 60 A
b. 50% of up to next 60 A of load not accounted for in (a)
c. 25% of the remainder (load not accounted for a and b)

The sample calculation of computing the demand load of the swine growing to finishing
building is shown below with the assumed equipment to be installed in the building.

The following is the listing of loads present in the building

48 – 20W lighting outlets (fluorescent lamps)
30 – 10 A, 300 V Duplex convenience outlets
1 – 3 hp 240 V feed storage auger motor
2 – 1 hp 240 V exhaust fans
1 – ½ hp 240 V water pump

Based on the loads listed above, the following are the information in terms full-load
currents from the breeding station structural farm building.

Swine Breeding Station Loads Ampere

Farm Structure
48 – 20W lightning outlet 48 x 20 = 960/240 V = 4
(fluorescent lamps)
ABEn 154. Final Course Project Report

30 – 10 A, 300 V Duplex 0.75 x 30 = 22.5

Convenience Outlets
1 – 3 hp, 240 V feed 17 1.25 x 17 = 21.25
storage auger motor
2 – 1 hp 240 V exhaust 8 2 x 8 = 16
fans
1 – ½ hp, 240 V water 4.9 4.9
pump
Total 68.65

In getting the capacity of the main service equipment, using the load in the farms without
diversity include the feed storage auger, exhaust fans, water pump, convenience outlets
and one-half of the lightning outlets

Solving for the load without diversity:

a. ½ of light load 2
b. ½ Convenience light 11.25
c. 3 hp feed storage auger motor 21.25
d. 1 hp exhaust fan 16
e. ½ hp water pump 4.9
Total 55.4

Applying demand systems:

Demand load total = total of Proportion of Total Demand
a. 100% of: 1.) Load without diversity 55.4A 55.4
Largest of 2.) 125% of largest motor 21.25A
3.) Not less than 60 A 0
b. 50% of Up to next 60 A of load not
accounted for in a)
(69.32 – 55.735) 13.25 6.625
c. 25% of Remainder 0 0
TOTAL 68.65 62.025

Demand Load: 62.025 A @ 240 V

Therefore, the recommended size of Service Entrance Switch = 100 A

Note that 100 A is chosen because the actual demand load is 62.025 A rated at 240
V and the next size to be chosen should be at least with additional 50 % to have spare for
additional equipment that may take place in the future for expansion purposes. Therefore,
the recommended rated size of the Service Entrance Switch of 100 A is acceptable.

4.4 Determination of the Number and Capacity of the Branch Circuits

Branch circuits involve the portion of the wring system from the final overcurrent
protection to the load. For the lighting fixtures and general-purpose circuits that it is better
to use or allow a no more than 8 to 10 outlets for each 15 A circuits and not exceed to 10
up to 12 in every 20 A circuit.

Applying the recommended number of outlets to be served using the 15-A or 20-A branch
circuits in alternatives is computed below.

For Lighting Outlets

ABEn 154. Final Course Project Report

48 lightings∧outlets
No .of 15−A circuits= =4.8∨5 minimum circuits
Option 1: outlets
10
circuit
48 lightings∧outlets
No .of 20−A circuits= =4 minimum circuits
Option 2: outlets

Option 1: outlets
10
circuit
30lightings∧outlets
No .of 20−A circuits= =2.5∨3 minimumcircuits
Option 2: outlets
12
circuit

The remaining assumed loads without diversity are feed storage auger motor, (2)
exhaust fans, and water pump with each has each own branch circuits. Therefore, the
total number of branch circuits is 12 in the main service entrance including a one space
for spare. The data were listed or summarize in a tabular method form

Table for listing branch circuits in the building

Circuit Breaker Number Load Served Circuit Rating

1,3,5,7 Lighting Outlets 20 A / 120 V
2,4,6 Convenience Outlets 15 A / 120 V
8 Feed Bulk Agitator Motor 30 A / 240 V
9 Water Pump 15 A / 240 V
10, 11 Exhaust Fans 15 A / 240 V
12 Spare for expansion 15 A / 240 V

Sizing the branch circuits for an electric range presents a special situation. Minimum
wire sizes required in each of the different parts in the wiring system contain the wire size
requirement of the main feeder for the overcurrent protection of service entrance, branch
circuits and different loads. It is determined through the assume allowable voltage drop to
be 2% of 240 V of source

The following are the information in the computation of the wire sizes required in each
branch circuits.
1. The type of wire is TW stranded copper wire with 7 strands
2. The distance specified in the computations is the distance possible path of the
conduit raceway from the panel board to the farthest component of the CKT
3. Allowable Voltage Drop (ED) and voltage of the source are, ED = 2%, V=240

The continuous demand load on the panel board is 62.025 A. According to NEC
(2002), the feeder overcurrent protection device should be sized with not less than the
125% of the continuous demand load on the panel board. Using this formula, we can get
the ampere of the main feeder:

Ampacity of the Main Feeder = DL x 1.25 = Ampere of the Main Feeder

= 62.025 x 1.25 = 77.53 A
ABEn 154. Final Course Project Report

From Table A.5, select No. 4 TW wire with a rating of 75 A at 90ºC. At 90ºC, the ampacity
correction factor for a 2-wire TW wire is 0.41. Therefore, you should use 4 No. 4 T85
aluminum or copper clad aluminum type with 2 No. 2 ITW wire at protection rating of 75
A.

Wire sizes for the branch circuits for the lighting outlet are computed using the two
formulas as follows:

ED
RA= , where ED = voltage drop = 0.02 x 240 v = 4.8 ohms
I
RA E D × 1000
= , where D=is the lengthof the wire within the circuit
1000 m 2× D

a. Branch Circuit 1
Assumption: I = 1 A, D= 30 m
ED 0.02 x 240
RA= = =4.8 ohms
I 1
RA 4.8 ×1000
= =¿
1000 m 2 ×30

 Branch Circuits for convenience outlets
 Branch Circuits for specific purpose
 Branch Circuits for special purpose

III.1 Determination of the number and types of luminaires for the building
The lights needed for this structure is that it should have at least 40 lux/sq. meter.
Fluorescent lamp is used and suggested by BPEX, it is a practical guide for lighting for
pig units.

PAES (2001) recommended that the required number of lamps per sq. m. for lighting
intensity equal to 50 lux for an a 20W fluorescent lamp is 0.068.

The area covered in the specific building are listed below:

Area Covered by the Gestation Sow Pens (16.90m x 50.20m = 848.48m2)
Area Covered by Security Room (2m x 2.50 m = 5 m2)
Area Covered by the Office (5.25m x 13.00m = 68.25 m2)
Area Covered by the Equipment Room (10.20m x 14.00 m = 142.8m2)
Area Covered by the Storage Room (10.00m x 5.00m = 50 m2)
Area Covered by the Farrowing Pen (5.70m X 9.80m = 55.86 m2)
Area Covered by the Piglet Area (17.20 m x 8 m = 137. 6 m2)
Area Covered by Boar Pen (5.20m x 12.20 m = 63.44 m2)

ABEn 154. Final Course Project Report

Based on the area presented above, the number of luminaires required per section is
computed using the formula:
No .of luminaire=number of lamps per sq . meter ×area of pens

In Solving the number of luminaries on each area are computed below:

a. Gestation Sow Pens

The recommendation illumination for the pens is 50 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire = No. of lamps required/ m2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 848.48 m 2
= 57. 69664 lamps or 58 lamps
Use: 58 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire, one per pen

b. Security Room:
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 500 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 5 m 2
= 0.34 lamp
Use: 1 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

c. Office Room
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 500 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 68.25 m 2
= 4.641 lamps or 5 lamps
Use: 5 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

d. Equipment Room
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 100 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.

Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 142.8 m 2
= 9.71 lamps or 10 lamps
Use: 10 - 20 W fluorescent luminaires

e. Storage Room
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 100 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 50 m 2
= 3.4 lamps or 4 lamps
Use: 4 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

f. Farrowing Pen
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 200 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
ABEn 154. Final Course Project Report

Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens

= 0.068 x 55.86 m 2
= 3.7984 lamps or 4 lamps
Use: 4 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

g. Piglet Area
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 200 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 137.6 m 2
= 9.356 lamps or 10 lamps
Use: 10 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

h. Boar Pen
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 50 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 63.44 m 2
= 4.3139 lamps or 5 lamps
Use: 5 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

i. Mating Area/Pen
The recommendation illumination for the pens is 300 lux. Using a 20 W of fluorescent
lamp that is equivalent to 0.068.
Solution:
Number of luminaire: = No. of lamps required/ m 2 x area of pens
= 0.068 x 85.5 m 2
= 5.814 lamps or 6 lamps
Use: 6 - 20 W fluorescent luminaire

Therefore, the total luminaire requirements for the 50-head Capacity Gestation
Sow for Breeding Station Farm Structure Building:
Solution:
Total Number of Luminaires = No of luminaires for ((mating, boar, gestation, farrowing
pens) + office + security room + feed storage + equipment room + piglet area)
= (6+5+58+4) +5+1+4+10+10
=103 - 20 W fluorescent luminaires

For the exterior lighting, it should be at least four (4) 18 W LED bulb can be used,
thus:
Use: 4 – 18 W LED bulbs

Therefore, the total luminaire requirements for the 50-head Capacity Sow in Breeding
Station Farm Structure Building:

Interior Lighting: 103 - 20 W fluorescent luminaires

Exterior Lighting: 4 – 18 W LED bulb
