CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Description

Being an Electrical Engineer, there are several work stations and places
to be a part of, one of these are being on the field of electrical transmission
and distribution system. One of the skills of an electrical engineer is being
able to familiarize on how the electrical transmission and distribution system
functions. Together with this skill, an electrical engineer should also be able
to design an electrical transmission and distribution system.
As a partial fulfilment of the Bachelor of Science in Electrical
Engineering subject namely Electrical Transmission and Distribution System
Design which aims to design a municipal or city map and its distribution
system. It aims to provide knowledge to electrical engineering students on
how to construct a distribution design and design report. The goal of this
design report is to create a basic foundation of knowledge to the students on
how to place transformer, transformer and wire sizes to be used with respect
to the different loads of different establishments and residential houses.

1.2 Project Objectives

 To design a municipal or city vicinity map.
 To design the load sizes, type and schedule of type A, B and C
residential loads.
 To design the load sizes, type and schedule of commercial loads.
 To design the load sizes, type and schedule of institutional loads.
 To design the load sizes, type and schedule of industrial loads.
 To design the three phase and single phase primary line.
 To design the proper and efficient placement of poles and the loads
connected to it.
 To design the proper and balance location of transformers, its size with
respect to the load connected to it.
2

1.3 Project Summary

The design report aims to design a municipal or city vicinity map and
construct its distribution system from the substation to the different
residential, commercial, institutional and industrial loads and the load
schedules of the said establishments. For the primary distribution system, it is
consist of computation for the sizes of transformers to use and its location for
the proper and balance distribution of electricity to different establishments.

3.3 Size of Conductors

Sizes of conductors both primary and secondary depend to what

consideration we want to emphasize with. If we want the most economical
sizes, we could use Kelvin’s Law while if we want that it would not exceed the
allowable voltage regulation at the farthest end of the radial system we could
slightly sacrifice economics. Other consideration we want to satisfy is the
mechanical and electrical limitations of conductors. Most of all the minimum
requirements set by the distribution utility where our project is situated. An
example of this requirements is on MERALCO that overhead conductor should
not carry higher than 75% of its rated capacity.

The maximum current that can flow on secondary conductor is the maximum
current that the transformer can produce.

3.4 Voltage Drop Calculation

ANSI Standard C84 as stipulated states that “For low voltage (<1000V), the
actual service voltage must lie within ±5% of nominal for continuous
operation. Any voltage deviation beyond these tolerances must be corrected.”

To lessen computations, we use the drop factor method since it has the same
orientation, sizes of wire, and operating voltage.

The following are formulas for solving the drop factor per kVA, per one
kilometer at 60 Hz and 85% pf.

Solving for the ampacity of the feeder,

kVA 14600
Ampacity of the Feeder = = =638.584 A
√ 3∗kV √ 3∗13.2

The ampacity of size 795 MCM is 900 A and 75% of it is 675 A. So, we use
795 bare ACSR.

The conductor for Feeder No. 3 is 795 MCM ACSR as secondary conductor
and #4/0 AWG ACSR as ground wire. The resistance values are 0.08 Ω/km
and 0.3679 Ω /km respectively. The GMR values are 1.143 cm and 0.2481 cm
respectively.

The primary conductor impedance is

GMD ф 1.5∗100
Z1 = R ф + j0.1736 log ( GMR ф ) (
= 0.08 + j0.1736 log
1.143 )

Z1 = 0.08 + j0.3677 Ω / km

Figure 5.2.1 Substation Load Curves

5.3 Load Factors

Solving for the total connected load on each feeder,

Total Connected Load on Feeder 1 = Residential + Commercial + Institutional
Total Connected Load on Feeder 1 = 314.915 + 197 + 3,119
Total Connected Load on Feeder 1 = 3,630.915

Total Connected Load on Feeder 2 = Residential + Commercial + Institutional

Total Connected Load on Feeder 2 = 413.41 + 1,846 + 3,845
Total Connected Load on Feeder 2 = 6,104.41

Total Connected Load on Feeder 3 = Residential + Commercial + Institutional

Total Connected Load on Feeder 3 = 391.110 + 7,305 + 6,115
Total Connected Load on Feeder 3 = 13,811.11

Total Connected Load on Feeder 4 = Residential + Commercial + Institutional

+ Industrial
Total Connected Load on Feeder 4 = 601.265 + 4,345 + 4,500 + 5,500
123

Total Connected Load on Feeder 4 = 14,946.27

Solving for the total connected load,

Total Connected Load = Feeder 1 + Feeder 2 + Feeder 3 + Feeder 4 =
3,630.915 + 6,104.41 + 13,811.11 + 14,946.27
Total Connected Load = 38,492.705 kVA

Maximum Demand of the Whole System = 31,248.969 kVA (1 PM)

Sum of the Individual Maximum Demand = 1,373.095 + 10,681.45 +

14,284.65 + 5,225
Sum of the Individual Maximum Demand = 31,564.195 kVA
