DELTAIC PLAIN
A deltaic plain consists of active or
abandoned deltas, which are either
overlapping or contiguous to one
another.
A delta is a relatively flat area at the
mouth of a river or a river system in
which sediment load is deposited and
distributed.
The major rivers play an important
role in the formation processes of the
Ganges–Brahmaputra–Meghna
Rivers mega delta in South Asia.

SIR JOHN WILSON SCHOOL 3

BENGAL DELTA
The Ganges and the Brahmaputra, which drain to the Bay of Bengal as
a combined river, carry the largest sediment load. These two rivers
together with another river, the Meghna, have built one of the
largest delta in the world known as the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna
Delta or the Bengal Delta.
The GBM delta is one of the physiographic units of Bangladesh.
The delta areas of Bangladesh are densely populated, with a
predominance of agricultural activities due to the high fertility of the
soil.
Continual land accretion and erosion in this large and constantly
evolving delta influences the population, settlement pattern and the
socio-cultural fabric of Bangladesh.

SUNDARBANS Sundarbans: South of the Ganges tidal floodplain, there is a broad belt of land,
barely above sea level with an elevation of only 0.91m. This very low land of
some 4,827 sq km area, contains the Sundarbans forest and the Sundarbans
reclaimed estates (cultivated land) - classified as Sundarbans unit.

The Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of

the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal

The fertile soils of the delta have been subject to intensive human use for
centuries, and the ecoregion has been mostly converted to intensive agriculture,
with few enclaves of forest remaining.

The remaining forests, taken together with the Sundarbans mangroves, are
important habitat for the endangered tiger.

Additionally, the Sundarbans serves a crucial function as a protective barrier for

the millions of inhabitants in and around Khulna and Mongla against the
floods that result from the cyclones.

SIR JOHN WILSON SCHOOL 5

COASTAL PLAIN
Coastal plain - a plain extending inland from a seashore, commonly the
result of geologically recent emergence of the land.
Coastal Plain is mostly exposed to the Bay of Bengal and is subjected to
flooding.
This region is protected by Mangrove trees which acts as a barrier during
tropical cyclones.
The soil of this area is saline.
Shrimp cultivation is very popular in this region as this region is known as the
world’s largest brackish water zone.
Brackish water: mixture of sweet and salt water.
