High Speed Signaling Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

2.1 Introduction
Two types of signaling links are available in the Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) network: 64 kbit/
s signaling links and 2 Mbit/s signaling links. LKTATE(BSC6900,BSC6910) specifies the rate
type of an SS7 signaling link.

Added the

The 2 Mbit/s signaling links, also called high-speed signaling links, are the SS7 links in the SS7
network and have a data rate calculated using the following formula:

N x 64 kbit/s (1 ≤ N < 31)

where N indicates the number of timeslots occupied by the high-speed signaling link.

The electrical features of the high-speed signaling link port comply with ITU-T G.703 and its
frame structure complies with ITU-T G.704.

NOTE

The naming convention of the 2 Mbit/s high-speed signaling link is specified by the ITU protocols. In
actual situations, the maximum data rate of the high-speed signaling link is 1984 kbit/s.

A high-speed signaling link occupies multiple 64 kbit/s timeslots and its transmission rate is
determined by the number of timeslots.

The BSC uses high-speed signaling links when the traffic is heavy and the 64 kbit/s signaling
links cannot meet the signaling requirements on the A interface.

The High Speed Signaling feature brings the following advantages:

l High capacity
The BSC is no longer limited by the capacity of a single signaling point when narrowband
signaling is used. This feature meets the requirements for a large signaling link bandwidth
to increase processing capability and also saves operators' signaling resources and
simplifies network topology.
l Flexible bandwidth configuration

GSM BSS
High Speed Signaling Feature Parameter Description 2 Overview

The high-speed signaling link bandwidth is N x 64 kbit/s, where N ranges from 1 to 31.
Operators can flexibly configure the high-speed signaling link bandwidth based on the
traffic volume, thereby reducing their transmission cost.
l Short delay
High-speed signaling links use multiple timeslots to carry signaling data. This reduces the
transmission delay of signaling data over the A interface, especially during off-peak hours,
thereby reducing the call setup duration.

High speed signaling links apply to the following scenarios:

l Some timeslots over a port are used to transmit speech information and the other timeslots
are used to transmit signaling information.
l Operators need to select high-speed signaling links with different data rates based on the
load of the signaling links.

3 Technical Description

3.1 Implementation of 2 Mbit/s Signaling Link

The TDM interface board, such as the EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, OIUb, or POUc board, of the Ater or
A interface processes signaling on the 2 Mbit/s signaling link according to the Message Transfer
Part Layer 2 (MTP2) and Message Transfer Part Layer 1 (MTP1) protocols. The GSM signaling
processing board, such as the XPUa, XPUb, or EGPUa board, processes signaling according to
the Message Transfer Part 3 (MTP3) protocol.

Processing of SS7 Signaling in the BSC

The processing of SS7 signaling differs in BM/TC separated mode and BM/TC combined mode.

Figure 3-1 shows the processing of the SS7 signaling when the BSC6900 works in BM/TC
separated mode.

forwards the processed signaling to the EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, OIUb, or POUc board of the
Ater interface in the same subrack or another subrack through the SCUa/SCUb board.
2. In the MPS or EPS, the EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, OIUb, or POUc board processes signaling
according to the MTP2 and MTP1 protocols, and forwards the processed signaling to the
EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, OIUb, or POUc board in the transcoder subrack (TCS) over the Ater
interface.
3. In the TCS, the TNU board performs timeslot-based TDM switching for the signaling, and
transmits the signaling to the EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, OIUb, or POUc board of the A interface.
4. The signaling is transmitted to the mobile switching center (MSC) over the A interface.

Figure 3-2 shows the processing of the SS7 signaling when the BSC6900 works in BM/TC
combined mode.

interface in the same subrack or another subrack through the SCUb board.
2. The POUc board processes the signaling according to MTP2 and MTP1 protocols and then

Configuration Principles
The configuration principles are as follows:

l Do not allocate timeslot 0 to a 2 Mbit/s signaling link.

l Timeslots allocated to 2 Mbit/s signaling links can be discontinuous.
l You are advised to allocate eight to twenty-five 64 kbit/s timeslots to a 2 Mbit/s signaling
link.
l Either a 2 Mbit/s signaling link or a 64 kbit/s signaling link can be configured for the BSC
to communicate with a destination signaling point.
l For one EIUa, EIUb, OIUa, or OIUb board, either 2 Mbit/s signaling links or 64 kbit/s
signaling links can be configured. When multiple 2 Mbit/s signaling links are configured,
they must be of the same bandwidth.
l The 2 Mbit/s signaling links in a BSC must be of the same bandwidth, thereby ensuring
that the loads between different signaling links are balanced.
l The primary BSC and the secondary BSCs in a TC pool can be configured with 2 Mbit/s
signaling links of different bandwidth.
l At least two high-speed signaling links are available in the same signaling point, and the
signaling links use different E1 or STM-1 links. When multiple Ater or A interface boards
are configured, the signaling links should be allocated to different boards. This utilizes the
reliability of the 2 Mbit/s signaling links because they are important to the GSM
telecommunications system.
l The signaling mode used between the BSC and MSC must be determined before the
signaling links are configured on the BSC.

GSM BSS
High Speed Signaling Feature Parameter Description 3 Technical Description

l Two Mbit/s signaling links must be configured on the BSC if eight or more 64 kbit/s
signaling links are required, taking into account of the signaling transfer capacity between
the BSC and MSC.
l The number of the timeslots allocated for a 2 Mbit/s signaling link must be the same on the
BSC and the MSC. Configure the E1 port number depending on the connection of the E1
cable.
l The BSC supports the MSC Pool feature, which means that one BSC can be connected to
multiple MSCs, MSC servers, or MGWs. In this case, configure the SS7 links based on the
proportion of the A interface CICs between the BSC and the MSCs (MSC Servers or
MGWs) to the total A interface CICs.
l Each 2 Mbit/s signaling link can be configured only in one E1 port of the Ater or A interface
board.
l Multiple 2 Mbit/s signaling links can be configured in only one E1 port of the Ater or A
interface board and occupy different timeslots over the E1 port.
l Before configuring a 64 kbit/s signaling link after removing a 2 Mbit/s signaling link on
the Ater or A interface board, reset the board.
l Before configuring a 2 Mbit/s signaling link after removing a 64 kbit/s signaling link on
the Ater or A interface board, reset the board.
l A maximum of eight 2 Mbit/s signaling links can be configured on one EIUa, EIUb, OIUa,
or OIUb board.
l A maximum of 64 signaling links can be configured on one POUc board. The total number
of timeslots allocated to these signaling links cannot exceed 128.

After a 2 Mbit/s signaling link is added on the BSC, the MTP3 link management entity of the
BSC continuously attempts to establish a signaling link. Once the signaling link is successfully
established, the BSC can use this link to transmit data.

3.2 Comparison Between 2 Mbit/s Signaling Links and 64

kbit/s Signaling Links
This section compares the 2 Mbit/s signaling links with the 64 kbit/s signaling links in terms of
implementation and functions.

Implementation
The implementation differences between the 2 Mbit/s signaling link and the 64 kbit/s signaling
link are classified into the following types:

l Format of signaling messages

– The backward sequence number (BSN) and forward sequence number (FSN) in a 64
kbit/s signaling link are 7 bits in length, while those in a 2 Mbit/s signaling link are 12
bits, ranging from 0 to 4095. Figure 3-4 shows the formats of the signal units in a 2
Mbit/s signaling link.
– The length indicator (LI) in a 64 kbit/s signaling link is 6 bits in length, while that in a
2 Mbit/s signaling link is 9 bits, ranging from 0 to 511. The 9-bit LI can indicate the
272-octet information field supported by the MTP.

Figure 3-4 Formats of signal units in a 2 Mbit/s signaling link

l Error correction methods

– A 2 Mbit/s signaling link adopts the basic error correction method. This method detects
the error signal units by marking the error time segments with flags.
– A 64 kbit/s signal link adopts the preventive cyclic retransmission method.
l Sequence-related messages, such as Changeover-Order signal (COO) and Changeover-
Acknowledgement signal (COA), are different in format.
l The basic buffer capacity in error correction is as follows:
– The retransmission buffer area at the sending end of a 2 Mbit/s signaling link is 4095
in length, greater than that of a 64 kbit/s signaling link.
– The buffer area at the receiving end of a 2 Mbit/s signaling link is greater than that of
a 64 kbit/s signaling link.

Functions
l Delimitation and alignment of signal units
A flag byte (F) can be used to delimit a signal unit. The bit pattern for the flag byte is
01111110. The zero-bit insertion method is used to ensure that the pattern does not
incidentally appear in the signal unit. Loss of alignment occurs when a bit pattern
disallowed by the delimitation procedure (more than six consecutive 1s) is received, or
when the allowed length of the signal unit is exceeded.
l Acceptance procedure
Upon detecting an error signal unit, the acceptance procedure marks the time segment with
a flag and starts a counter that is incremented every time a signal unit error is detected. If
the counter exceeds the threshold, the signaling link is marked as invalid.
l Error detection
The error detection function is performed by means of 16 check bits provided at the end of
each signal unit.
l Error correction
A 2 Mbit/s signaling link adopts the basic error correction method, a non-compelled method
in which the positive/negative acknowledgments and the retransmission mechanisms are
used to ensure the correct transfer of message signal units. Before receiving the positive

acknowledgments, the BSC stores transmitted signal units in the transmitting sequence.
This mechanism enables that the transmitted but not yet positively acknowledged, signal
units remain available for retransmission. The transmission of new signal units is
temporarily stopped during retransmissions.
l Initial alignment
Initial alignment applies to the activation and restoration of a signaling link.
l Error monitoring
Error monitoring is performed when a signaling link is either in the error time segments or
in the proving state of the initial alignment procedure.
l Flow Control
Upon detecting the congestion at the receiving end of a signaling link, the BSC activates
flow control at the receiving end. A certain status signal of the signaling link is sent to the
transmitting end, instructing the transmitting end to stop transmitting signal units has
already been acknowledged.
– If the congestion is cleared, acknowledgments of input signal units are resumed by the
signaling link.
– If the congestion persists, the receiving end periodically sends a link status signal unit
to the transmitting end of the signaling link.
– If the congestion period exceeds a predefined threshold, the transmitting end
acknowledges the signaling link failure and exits the services.
