Artificial Intelligence Applications for Managers

Term Paper Proposal

Problem Description
The current education system is broad, structured, and static, does not focus on individual learning pace and self-
development. The "One size fit all” [1] model, where the students with different interests, talents and learning progress
rates study together. It becomes difficult for instructors and teachers to identify the individual talents and special needs
of the students, particularly when the class size is huge.

With COVID, there has been a major digital shift in education. This further increased the need for personalized learning.

This interested us to explore how AI can solve this problem and study the need of personalized learning in digital setup.
For this purpose, we have chosen Byju's, an Indian multinational educational technology company. Some of the aspects
we want to explore are:

AI Aspect: Data acquisition and learning

Personalized Engine: Byju's is offering an effective and engaging learning experience by creating personalized learning
paths for students based on their capabilities and learning pace

Knowledge Graphs: Formed over 50,000 concepts [2], helps in getting data for personalized learning based on different
parameters difficulty level, time taken to answer a question etc.

Problem Domain: Assisting school children to learn at their pace by using personalized engines

Business Impact:
As of May 2021, Byju’s is the India's most valuable unicorn startup with a valuation of $16.5 billion. The valuation nearly
doubled in last 18 months, as pandemic accelerated the company’s growth i. Following are the major tenets we would
explore to study the Byju's growth trajectory in which AI has been their focus.
AI on business metrics: AI was instrumental in creating a differentiation strategy with its personalized learning model.
This led to increase in key business metrics such as revenue, customer satisfaction, customer engagement etc.
Acquisitions and Partnerships: To increase the capabilities of the learning platform, acquisition and partnerships are
being undertaken by Byju’s. Acquisition of Osmo complemented Byju’s with richer AI and ML technology increasing
personalization and customer engagement through gamification etc.
Personalized learning on Education Ecosystems: Pandemic and increased digital adoption have steered digital learning
models and hybrid (Physical + digital) is seen as the future of the learning. Student based learning path helps educators,
parents, and students in assessing the learning curve. Digital learning system has channeled creative and simpler
teaching methods with better monitoring systems.

Objectives:

 To study the journey, key initiatives of Byju's in the process of building digital learning platform
 To study the different AI applications in Byju’s offerings
 Impact of COVID-19 and limitations of digital learning models

Methodology:
We plan to gather the data using both primary and secondary research. As a part of primary research, we are planning
to have discussions with the current employees of Byju’s to understand the AI applications in building the personalized
learning model. As part of the secondary research, we will gather relevant literature regarding the AI applications,
business impact of ed techs and Byju’s key operational practices and initiatives incorporating the variable of COVID-19.
